[jburka@min.net] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 24 Nov 1999 02:45:03 EST From: ToriCure@aol.com Subject: new ecto member info Hello to everyone on Ecto, My name is Mark, and I was introduced to this amazing list by one of your auspicious fellow members, John. I'm happy to see that I already am familiar with a lot of the wonderful music which you promote on the list, but there is still much that I am interested in becoming familiarized with. Right now I've been looking into Veda Hille. I've listened to some sound clips and she is definitely a unique cross between Tori Amos and Pj Harvey. I know that many of you on this list are indie musicians yourselves. I myself have been a songwriter for almost 5 years, and I'm 18. I play guitar, write and sing. I think my style can most similarly be compared to Liz Phair, for lyric style. Her album Exile in Guyville was pretty revolutionary for me. But overall, my sound is pretty unique. I live in the Tampa bay area in Florida and I have been attending open mics to familiarize myself with audiences. A lot of my work has been done in my bedroom over these past years (for those of you who know some history about Liz, I really parallel her in that respect as well). It's given me a lot of time to let the songs just flow and come togetehr. But now I am trying to play out more and get heard. My goal is to make a demo in the near future and I'm interested in meeting new musicians who can join my artistic vision. My songs are based on dysfunctional relationships. The songs, in many ways, act as my catharsis for these situations, and also give them final closure. Some of them are not even necessarily about anyone. Some of it is fictional, some of it is autobiographical. It's always fun to let the listener decide for him or herself what they want to believe. My long term goal is to get recorded by an indie label. I honestly just want my stuff to be accessible and heard one day. If anyone has any advice they would like to give, or would like to make comment, feel free to do so. I look forward to talking with many of you on the list. Thanks again John. :) Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Nov 1999 16:45:26 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: Velvet Belly in the Netherlands Hi, Velvet Belly is going to release some material in the Netherlands on November 25. In combination with this they will play two concerts there in December - Dec 10 - Utrecht Dec 11 - Amsterdam (or was it the other way around :) I'll notify the list if I did mix up those two dates) If you have a chance to go to one or both of these concerts then you really should, because they are amazing live. They are really nice, so if you have a chance then you should say hello. If I had to opportunity I would have gone myself, but s adly enough I can't. Concerning England - the official release is postponed to February 7, when the EP Easy is released (with new cover and a cover version of KaTe's Man With A Child In His Eyes) together with the Lucia album with a new cover and a new version of Easy. More info about this when I get it. *hugs* - -- Yngve n.p. They compare them to Kate Bush fronting the Charles Mingus' band (or something like that). Their album is 'Love Not Love Lust Not Lust' on Buzz CD's. Apparently, they also have a 1994 release that was much more avante-jazz. Anybody heard of this group? jay Jay M. My 2 cents to you would be to establish a web site and drop an MP3 or two on it, perhaps lyrics if you want, and then give us the link. That'll at least make this list's members aware of your music. Whether that results in and indie contract can't say. But it certainly wouldn't hurt. Much of the music I've accumulated of late started with a mention here, then a trip to a website, then a wielding of credit card. We also did a compilation CD (CDR actually) called Ectopia of music by members of this list. I was editor but it was essentially all member contributed work including artwork. It is still available, if interested email me for the particulars. There's been a handful of new people since then who are apparently musicians, and some not so new who wanted to participate in Ectopia but didn't make it for whatever reason. Perhaps we should consider a Volume Two. I would be willing to do it all over again, unless someone else wants the job. I'm not soliciting submissions at this time, just planting the seed. I think you'd agree this is not the best time of year for undertaking extracurricular projects, if you know what I mean. But mull the idea over while you enjoy your holiday cider. My thinking is the February time frame would be a good time to call for submissions in earnest. (BTW, did anyone see last Sunday's Simpsons where Apu sold his octuplets to the zoo. Had to laugh at the name of the zoo's show: Octopia. If we get as far as a Volume 8 we'll have to steal that :). Geno's performance was enjoyable enough, but I was more interested in buying Bon's CDs. I had already picked out PL's Dabblings in Darkness and was looking at some of Bon's solo stuff. However, when I told Geno I was entrigued by his set and also lived in N.J., he was quick to point out his discs. I noticed his stuff wasn't selling and the guilt trip began.:( I gave into it and bought his CD Standing in Stereo. Both Bon and Hanny play on it so I figured it might be OK. I'm not really that keen on his" style" of playing, but he is a good guitarist. The CD wasn't half bad at all. Okay everybody, I may be going a little crazy --- and if I am, it's no doubt due to too much primetime U.S. network television! --- but I could have sworn I heard Susan McKeown during one of those commercials, or adverts, that seem to be popular with mktg folks of late. The ones that are very vague, soft sell, crashing waves on a beach, etc. etc. At any rate, her voice came shining through clearly, for about 15 seconds, tops, and just now I placed the song: H-O Abha-inn (Little One) from "Bushes & Briars". I don't suppose any of you have heard this, too? If so, can you tell me what product the commercial was promoting? I'd like to write a note to thank somebody. :) Best regards, - ---Mickey F. n.p.
