Perhaps it's a repeat...but I never caught it. So, the viewers in the Philly, Delaware, and New Jersey areas should look for this show around the time posted. This post comes from WHYY a/k/a channel 12 around these parts. Other folks...look it up...should be available. Otherwise, I suppose I'm still posting here... A word relating to Project Lo and Happy and Bon Lozaga and Hanny. The Philly show was great with an excellent turnout. The Maryland show, I'm told, a tad on the disappointing side. Anyway, kudos to the Chicago and Philly goers....great turnout...great show. The group was more vibrant here than their performance at The Wire. Albany anyone?? Those people attending the Philly show saw something that was a departure from the past. That's all folks! Tony Friday, November 26, 11:00 p.m. SARAH MCLACHLAN: MIRRORBALL Filmed during Sarah McLachlan's 1998 tour, this program features hits from her albums Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing. The one-hour performance is McLachlan's first live concert film, and coincides with her new live album, also called Mirrorball. McLachlan is a Grammy award-winning artist, and is best known for her founding role in the Lilith Fair music festival which celebrates female rock, pop and folk artists. I have heard about her for years (mostly on this list), but the only work of hers I really remembering hearing is the accordian and sax paying she does on Mary Lydia Ryan's Diaphanous. Amy was quite personable--as was her sister--who I got to sit by. I knew that she did some strange things vocally, and she certainly did. She reminded me of a cross between Yma Sumac, Iva Bittova, a Tuvan throat singer, an Indian raga singer, and a touch of Marta Sebestyen. She definitely is an eclectic mix. She played accordian mostly, a bass? guitar, and a regular guitar on her final number. While I thoroughly enjoyed the concert, I wasn't as blown away as I thought I would be. For all it's wonderful oddity, her music didn't move me at all emotionally--except for those songs I found amusing. And while her vocal techniques were impressive--I wasn't blown away by them. I think Amy's greatest gift is her ability to fuse so many different styles, but I personally didn't find her as good as some of the originals that seemed to influence her. I did pick up her Greatest Hits CD, which has a great sampling of numbers throughout her career. I would definitely recommend that people who are into music a little off the beaten path, that fuses influences from around the world, check her out. She's definitely a sweet person and it certainly won't be a boring night! Jeff Hanson n.p. Ann Hampton Callaway - Easy Living n.r. OK, I surrender! I've never heard her, though I've been reading about her for years, and have now given in to temptation and ordered her Greatest Hits CD from Unit Circle. And I had to bail due to a work crisis that kept me at the office way too late *sigh* I might have tried to barrel over there had Phantasmagoria not gone incommunicado, but all the bad luck options lined up together... Here are my latest reactions: Wave after wave, I am swept up in her brilliance. Each listen brings new discoveries. The oddest bits of her songs pop up in my mind days later. Her sound is luxuriant and challenging. Any comparisons are bound to fall short. Each album is distinct, and each demands a new aural leap of faith. Leaps well worth taking. Give in. Worship her. Worship her. Now. I'll second that... mmm... Emily's music is SO subtly layered... and even though _Moon in Grenadine_ isn't a "sonic experience" in the traditional (read: _Grandmother's Tea Leaves_) sense, there are still little hidden bits of acoustica (I did NOT just use that word! Somebody get out the gun!) that just simmer up from the songs... and it's neat, I had to listen to MiG for a few months before it finally totally clicked with me, but now, the process of listening to _Four Walls Bending_ before it clicks is interesting... I keep almost figuring out what the equation is between me and that album... I've figured it out for MiG, that was what clicked... but FWB is much more elusive, it's taking its time before fully just opening up and flooding out of my stereo like warm bathwater... right now, I'm about up to my knees, and it's the jacuzzi after the jets are off, just still water outside at night in south Florida humidity, it's got that feeling... but soon, oh soon, everything is going to make perfect sense, and I can't wait.
