Probably the single coolest thing, web-based, that I've seen, is Kristin Hersh's WIP subscription, and it's the only thing that's brought me back to an artist's site every month for a year. Second coolest thing is probably the fan reviews on the semi-official Peter Himmelman site (he's released albums on four different labels, plus a self-released disc, in the last 2 or 3 years so I'm not sure it's overly worthwhile to look at any of the labels' sites). The semi-official site - -- run by fans with Peter's occasional support (interviews, etc.) -- has a catalog of fan's reviews of concerts. Typically, folks who submit reviews receive as a thank you an autographed piece of memorabilia (such as a photo or postcard of an album cover). jeff nwIwp (now wishing I was playing): _This Desert Life_, the new Counting Crows. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 08:06:24 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Milla in NYC tonight! Hi! Of course every ectophile in the Northeast should be at Sarah Slean's house concert at Dan Stark's house tonight (she was at CB's Gallery last night, and all I can say is OH MY GOD... I haven't had a wide goofy grin on my face like that since the first time I saw Veda play, which was coincidentally at the same place). :) But in case for some reason you're allergic to New Jersey and simply *must* stay in The City, I just noticed that the Mercury Lounge has a "Milla Jovovich" on their schedule for 11:30 pm tonight (11/18). Mike Curry and I actually said to each other "hey, we could make that on the way home!" but I think that's a bit too much of a stretch on the second weeknight foray into the New York area in a row. So someone from here has to go and let us know how it was!!! And if she's selling CD's, buy two. :) Sarah made a *lot* of new fans last night, btw... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 08:16:21 -0800 From: "Cerquone, Suzanne" Subject: Jon Anderson/Xmas Goodies Foghorn wrote: >>Another one I'm glad I found many years ago is Jon Anderson's 3 Ships. Jon's voice is just perfect for hitting the high notes in that song. Other songs are a little syrupy for the average listener, but if you know what Jon is all about, it's endearing to the rest of us! Other Xmas faves: Holly Cole's "Treasure" or the EP "Christmas Blues," and although this is the only Enya disc I own, the CD single of "Silent Night" in Gaelic is incredibly beautiful. I'm not sure if this single is still available or on something else. Well, I don't know if you'd call this major or indie or what, but my favorite music website, bar none, is http://www.disciplineglobalmobile.com/ the site for King Crimson and related artists. The site contains musicians' diaries, a catalog, an active and high quality messageboard, and occasional music downloads unavailable elsewhere. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 08:43:39 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Sara Ayers News Sara Ayers news for those of you who are interested--and you should be if you think you're not. ;> - --Neile >X-Sender: saraayers@saraayers.com (Unverified) >Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 07:19:12 -0500 >To: listserver@saraayers.com >X-Loop: one >From: Sara Ayers >Subject: Sara Ayers News >Mime-Version: 1.0 > > >Hello, hello, > >News -- about 22 minutes worth: I've put up some new MP3 >songs, both on my site and on MP3.com. For example I'm not a big Counting > Crows fan but I do think they have a pretty cool looking website. > > I'm not sure I've seen an indie artist's site that I really like. By far the best artist web site I have ever seen, indie or major, leagues beyond all the rest, is http://www.fruvous.com/, aka "Fruvous Dot Com" (commonly referred to as FDC). I'm not sure whether you'd classify it "indie" or "major" - moxy fruvous were on Warner but dropped it and went for Bottom Line Records (how many other cases do we know of where a band dropped a major label to go with a smaller one specifically because they wanted a smaller label?). But the web site itself happens to be designed and maintained by a fan, Chris O'Malley, on his own time, with no funding from the label or the band. Both of them recognize the site as the band's "official" site, but it really is as "indie" as you can get. So, why? Well, take a look. It's *extensive*. It's well organized and designed, and looks good, but most important is the fact that it has *everything*. What's that, you saw moxy fruvous at some random tiny venue two and a half years ago, and you vaguely remember some impromptu song they made up on the spot at that show, and wanted to remember more about it? Go to FDC, look up the show by date, and you'll probably find a complete set list (chances are good you can even find a scan of the actual paper setlist they used), as well as reviews of the show written by other people who were there, with all you wanted to know about the obscure song. And don't be surprised to find a photograph of some of the people you may remember being next to you at the show. FDC is updated very frequently, usually several times a week. Not only are reviews, set lists, and photos from the latest shows place there on a regular basis; not only is the tour schedule updated on FDC the very same day their management books a new gig; it's also the subtle details. Some fan posts on the newsgroup asking if a certain show is going to be all ages or 18+ or 21+? Nobody knows, so the band's management (who follow the newsgroup) checks with the venue, and comes up with the answer. That very same day, the information shows up in the gig detail on FDC. Did the show just sell out of advance tickets? That, too, appears on FDC within a day or two. Every little detail anyone might want to know, every question someone might have, every piece of practical information you might think of. It's all there, and it's all accurate and up to date. There are photos of the band and of fans and of shows. There's a list of all their radio appearances since the site went live, as well as many from before that. There's a list of all their gigs since the site went live, as well as many from before that. There are show reviews by fans from practically every show. Set lists too. There's an FAQ with info about the band. There's practically all the press that has ever been written about them in mainstream (and some obscure) publications. There are lyrics to all of their songs. Complete liner notes about all of the albums, including details about what was recorded when and where, and what was released when and where. Maps showing all the places they've played. Personal information about any fans who have chosen to be listed, and links to their personal web sites. Pointers to the newsgroup, mailing lists, and other online resources. Band related merchandise. Sheet music, chord progressions, and guitar tablatures for those songs where people have figured it out. Contact information. Latest news. An archive of the paper mailings the band sends out to their list. Minute detail about upcoming (& past) gigs - venue info, directions, lodging, etc. And other stuff I haven't listed.
