Many thanks, Neal, but I bought my _Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash_ in 1/91 in NYC. I'm still annoyed about this, as I gave up the opportunity to buy a boot CD of REM's appearance on MTV Unplugged (at the time, I had a good quality audio tape of the performance, which had been broadcast on the radio a few months prior). The tape is long gone and I've seen plenty of copies of RSL, but never been able to find the REM thing (if any of you has a copy and wants to share, or can point me to an mp3 site or something, I'd be amazingly grateful!). Still, RSL is a _highly_ recommended album...it's just burstin' with poguey brilliance. Already on my wish list are Marianne Faithfull's new one, Pooka's second album, Dynamite and People Are Strange by Stina, Briana Corigan's album and a couple Maura O'Connell albums not available in the US. I'm also considering the Poison Girls box set and the 1st Sinead Lohan. I'd also appreciate any advice about used CD shops, particularly in Covent Garden. Thanks in advance, jay Jay M. Why? Simply because the show that I experienced last night at MSG was one of the best (if not the best) that I have ever seen. (Are the eurythmics not ecto? I don't think so, given that Happy in the old days was best described as "Kate Bush meets Annie Lennox" ;)) Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart are back. They played for a mostly full house and met and exceeded my expectations. Reunion tours can be a rather boring and sad affair; watching artists past their glory days try to recapture the audience's attention and make a quick buck isn't really that entertaining. However, fortunately, this was an entirely different story. The Eurythmics came at it with a vengeance. They had the entire crowd standing on their feet for the two hour set (Annie said something like "You didn't come here to sit down and watch us on the TV screens, get off your butts" to a section that was sitting down and the crowd roared and complied). She is the most captivating performer that I have seen. The crowd watched her, felt her perform and adored every minute of it. Now for the music. It was as good a setlist as possible. Selections picked from their entire career, with some Annie Lennox solo works thrown in (Why? and Walking on broken glass) that worked just as well. New songs (17 again, I saved the world today, Peace is just a word, I want it all) and old songs reworked so that they sounded fresh (who else would start a show playing the three first songs off their fourth album released over 12 years ago and get a standing ovation from the crowd?). Meredith Brooks who opened the show was mediocre at best and plagued by sound problems (I wasn't sure if she was going for an industrial/Sonic Youth feedback sound or if the mics weren't working :)). Her 15 minutes are up as far as I am concerned. Overall, well worth the same-day round trip to NY. If you're in the UK, try to catch one of their remaining shows. If you missed them, then you can hope that they will tour more broadly next year. Cheers, Angelos PS. Check out http://www.vh1.com/eurythmics for the first 5 songs of their LA show in realvideo. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 20:22:27 +0000 From: jjhanson@worldnet.att.net Subject: Re: Eurythmics at MSG I'm also surprised at how little the new Eurythmics album has been discussed. I envy Angelos' chance of seeing them live. I was lucky enough to see them several times in their hey dey, and they always put on incredible shows. Annie is definitely one of the best performers around. I wish they would have toured a little more broadly, but maybe they'll come back. As for the new album, I really love it--it's a really solid album--I don't think there's a dud track in the bunch--however, there aren't any real standout tracks either. Just a consistently good album. It definitely grows on me the more I hear it as well. The only thing I miss is that it doesn't seem much of a departure for them. In the past, each of their albums seemed to be quite a departure from their previous. This one doesn't seem nearly as adventurous. Still, it's a great album. Jeff n.p. I've been a fan since 1983 and never thought they would reunite. I wish I had gone to see them in NY instead of hesitating over the price of plane tickets. Like you, I believe Annie is one of the greatest performers around. Few people have the stage presence she does. As for the new album, it has a grown on me a lot. I'm a little disappointed at how mellow most of it is and I miss the synths. But "17 Again" and "I Saved the World Today" (especially the acoustic version of it they've been doing live) are quickly becoming Eurythmics classics. The middle section is probably my favorite part of the album, though. "Anything But Strong," "Peace is Just a Word," and "I've Tried Everything" are subtle, well-crafted songs which are carried by Annie's always wonderful vocals. Overall, it's a good album, just not at all what I had expected. It's more like an Annie solo album than a Eurythmics album. The back cover says "Virvla is a performance piece that joins Boot with 3 dancers and features the graceful interplay of whirling garments, limbs and strings." It is dance music, very colorful. I like it a lot and have already listened to it twice today. It also comes with 2 videos (for tracks 5 and 6) so you can see the dance that is supposed to go with the music. It's on NorthSide Records. http://www.noside.com http://www.amazon.com has sound clips; that's where I got it from. ISABELLE PASCALE GRANET-- SANCTITY A little French, mostly English, spoken-word set to a lush soundscape that is very jazzy, kind of electronic/ambient. I think those who liked Vanessa Daou's album _Zipless_ would like this too. I find it similar in mood. KATIA CARDENAL-- CANTOS PARA LAS NAVEGAS Her second solo album. Katia has this wonderful voice that I kind of want to call deep, but that sounds too deep/too low, and the only way I can think of to describe it is thinking of the difference between dark and milk chocolate. Katia's voice is like dark chocolate.
