I bought hounds of love a while ago - hated the first section, thought the second section was cool... eventually sold it for some reason. and I never got into the sensual world, which I borrowed for a while. perhaps it wasn't the time. two days ago I borrowed a tape from a fellow cast member (we are in 'pirates of penzance' together, woohoo), and... wow. simply amazing. totally ahead of her time with effects, and she takes what one might call excess, and brings it up five or six notches until it has somehow passed excess into a realm of beauty. I am in love with this "new" (to me) artist. anyway, thanks for keeping my mind on it so the tape and the music could arrive in my head eventually. on another note, on mp3.com, check out sarah lentz - beautiful voice & music, with a dark sound. not sure who to compare her to, aside from standard sarah mclachlan/etc. but worth downloading her music for free. :-) oh, vague introduction in case I post to this again - 23-yo actor/amazon.com geek in seattle area. loves the majority of what people tout in here (gee, how original am I). I tend to tout such music to people to scoff and whine about it, and then decide they love it about a month later. of course, I did that with kate, so I'm not one to talk. :-) later! Barbara Gogan was in the UK punk band The Passions (broke up round 82). She sang, played lead guitar, was the spokesperson, and did most of the writing. Her lyrics were very feminist and dealt with the political problems of her homeland (from Dublin). She was prior to in a band called the Derelicts, also very punk. (this was '77) The Passions were on Polydor and toured with the Cure circa 1979. Round 1980, the toured with Roxy Music. Her sister Clair was in the 80s Rough Trade UK band Prag Vec. - -D In a message dated 11/9/99 1:58:22 AM Eastern Standard Time, owner-ecto-digest@smoe.org writes: > Damon des Jumeaux damon@jumeaux.bc.ca said: > > >>>> > Subject: who *is* barbara gogan? > > just a random question - > > i'm listening to sahara blue (the hector zazou thing) for the first time > in ages, and wondering if barbara gogan has done anything else and if it > sounds as good as her vocals on here. > > a quick search of the guide turns up nothing; the list archives (i didn't > realise i'd *put* search term highlighting in the existing listweb > search... geez, i've got to get working on that thing!) had a few > references, mostly woj answering my question about sahara blue ages ago > and a mention of something else by zazou and gogan. > ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 09:53:23 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: pepper mcgowan and more At 1:11 AM -0500 11/9/99, NNadelS@aol.com wrote: >anyone heard of pepper mcgowan? she has a cd out under the name pepper acton. >plays piano, i think i've seen her mentioned before. Yup! I think it's wonderful, though I know some other people don't think as highly of it. I've played _marrow_ to bits and would happily put it in my cd player at any time. For more info (and a diversity of opinions) check out her entry in The Ectophiles' Guide. It's listed under McGowan, though there's a cross-reference under Acton. She changed her name when she married because people kept asking her why she chose the name Pepper Action. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 09:57:40 -0800 From: Neile Graham Subject: Miranda Sex Garden news Thought people here might be interested in this. - --Neile >Date: Mon, 8 Nov 1999 17:11:31 -0500 (EST) >Reply-to: "Fiona Ferrer" >From: "Fiona Ferrer" >To: ectoguide@smoe.org >Subject: Ectophiles' Guide - Correction > >Topic: Correction > >Name: Fiona Ferrer >Email: fiona@miranda-sex-garden.com > >---------------------------------------------------------------------------- > >Miranda has stirred from her slumbers. So, Fiona has successfully navigated the path, and When the Pawn, despite its absurdly long title, turns out to be quite a good album. Of course, I never thought Fiona needed to get over the "girl with a piano thing" as someone called it, and I kind of miss the piano ballads. To me, the last 2 songs "Get Gone" and "I Know" are most like _Tidal_. But this album is bolder and more aggressive, the piano more immersed in the music and less prominent than before. Lots of blues and jazz influences still. After just one listen, I can't say much more than that, except that I like it a lot, and I think that if you like the single, "Fast As You Can" you will like When The Pawn... a lot too. Oh, and an A for the cover booklet. COWBOY JUNKIES-- Rarities... Why haven't I listened to this before? I've had this for some weeks, but with all the new stuff I've been getting, this just hadn't gotten played yet. Anyway, just one listen so far, but I like it a lot. Especially "Leaving Normal". I think what they say about storytelling on the back cover is right on target, and that's what I like so much about this album. New NATALIE MERCHANT live album: I'm sure someone will get this, and please post a review when you do. It's recorded from the June 13 concert in NYC (1999). I almost picked it up today, but there are only 10 songs on it, and most of them are from Tigerlily which I wasn't that impressed with. The title song, Ophelia, is the only thing that appears from _Ophelia_ interestingly enough, unless there are a bunch of hidden tracks or something. The track list, as far as I can remember includes: Carnival, Wonder, Beloved Wife, San Andreas Fault, Dust Bowl, After the Gold Rush, Space Oddity, The Gulf of Araby, and Ophelia. Does anyone know if ...Araby is a cover or a duet with? Anyway, it's good exposure for Katell. Hearing what Natalie did with the song was one of the things that made me want to buy it. New SHEILA CHANDRA!! for me at least. Roots & Wings came today from amazon.com. I'm so happy I'm having better success tracking down her back catalog. These really need to be re-issued. I don't know why Neile called them "fairly wide" in availibility. I never see them anywhere. Thanks to Suzanne, I ordered 4 cassettes from borders.com (struggle, nada brahma, quiet, and out on my own). 2 of these are on special order, so who knows if I'll ever actually get them, but at least there is hope now! Anyway, my brain just turns to mush and starts drooling in total awe when I think of Sheila's music, and oh God, when I LISTEN to it, so I have a hard time describing it to people. It's also very hard because I can't make comparisons. There just isn't anyone else (that I've heard at least) doing stuff like her. And no one who has the same inviting, mesmerizing effect on me that puts me RIGHT THERE with the music. I especially like track 4, The Struggle, (Slagverks mix) Finally, does anyone know anything about VANESSA DAOU's new album, Dear John Coltrane? The review I read of it was positive. I forgot about it until I saw it in a store, but I didn't have any money on me. JoAnn np: Roots and Wings by Sheila Chandra this is so wonderful, only marred by the fact that it will end soon because I am on track10, but then I can listen to it again, and again! over and over again! as many times as I want!! and I am happy :) plus it's a gorgeous day outside, warm and sunny. i hope it is as beautiful in the various ectoplaces around the world. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Nov 1999 15:41:33 -0500 (EST) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Kevin Bartlett/Black Tape for a Blue Girl On Mon, 8 Nov 1999, Paul Blair wrote: > I think it's just too cool that I can be a hundred miles from > home in a strange city, and after 11pm I can still find a way to read my > e-mail.
