Thanks Michael Hey all, Before I get into the upcoming shows, I'd like to invite all those interested to join the Avant-Progressive e-mail list which was set up by Steve Feiganbaum of Cuneiform Records. To do this, just click on this link: http://www.onelist.com/community/avant-progressive Here is a short description of what you can expect the general tone of the list to be like: A discussion group for music that falls into the categories of "avant progressive" rock; R.I.O [rock in opposition], Zeuhl, and other sub categories. While this list is open and NOT moderated, discussion is meant to focus on rehearsal intensive rock bands such as [but by NO means limited to] Art Bears, Art Zoyd, Blast, Bondage Fruit, Etron Fou, Happy Family, Henry Cow, Magma, Albert Marcoeur, Naked City, National Health, Samlas Mammas Manna, Soft Machine, Stormy Six, Univers Zero, 5uu's and many, many others. But please allow the conversation to take you where it goes. I'd like to keep the dialogue interesting and friendly and there are no penalties for straying into other musical waters here! Right now the list has about 40 members and, on average, there is about 5 to 10 messages a day. The following show will be at Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave. Chicago. The phone # is (773) 404-9494. November 11th: PROJECT LO featuring HAPPY RHODES 9pm $15 PL is Bon Lozaga's (Gong, Gongzilla, Bon) post modern chamber ensemble with a primarily acoustic focus. A marriage of the atmospheric and the avant garde. It's a much less structured project then either Gongzilla or Bon with a more ambient sound incorporating loops and synth alongside Bon's acoustic guitar. PL consists of Bon on guitars, Hansford Rowe on bass and Paul Ramsey (Echolyn) on drums. Performing with them (in the band) will be vocalist HAPPY RHODES, a truly gifted singer that will add a new dimension to their sound. She has an amazing 4 octave range that brings to mind early Kate Bush while, at the same time retaining her own highly original vocal nuances. Her latest disc, "Many Worlds are Born Tonight" has an electronic/sequenced feel to it so it will be interesting to see how she interacts in PL's mostly acoustic environment. For more info on HAPPY RHODES check out this link: http://www.smoe.org/ecto/ Opening up the evening will be the THIRD COAST STRING QUARTET. The following show will be at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western, Chicago. The phone # is (773) 276-3600 December 4th: BONE STRUCTURE featuring G.E. STINSON and GREGG BENDIAN with Stuart Liebig and Jeff Gauthier $10 G.E. STINSON has come a long way since his days with Shadowfax, getting out before they drifted off into their drecky new age obscurity. While he was in the band, the guitarist was always the one that provided the sharp angular edges and the raw power of their live performances. (Believe me, they were loud and intense back then.) Jump to the 90's...1990 brought the formation of the G.E. STINSON GROUP in Los Angeles and the subsequent completion of a recording entitled "The Same Without You" in 1993. This was to be the first of many collaborations that would lead to Stinson becoming a prominent member of the Los Angeles New Music community. Among these projects are "Right of Violet" featuring Alex Cline (drums) and Jeff Gauthier (violin); Adam Rudolph's opera "The Dreamer"; the Wayne Peet Trio recording "Fully Engulfed"; Unique Cheerful Events and Stinkbug (improvising collectives); duets with Nels Cline and Yasuhiro Otani; G.E. Stinson String Ensemble; the Metalworkers; Napalm Quartet; Splinter Group; Alex Cline Ensemble; A Thousand Other Names, (a Stinson led group which completed a self titled recording in 1996) and Bone Structure which is a four piece featuring Gregg Bendian on drums. He is presently caretaker and artist-in-residence for the New Music Monday series. The ongoing series provides a venue for experimental and improvised performance in Los Angeles. This date will be sort of a homecoming for him, as he spent the early years with Shadowfax here. Joining him will be the aforementioned Gregg Bendian (a FIERCE improviser in his own right, who has performed with, among others, Cecil Taylor), Stuart Liebig on bass and Jeff Gauthier on violin. His new disc, "Vapor" which will be out shortly on Sonic Youths Ecstatic Peace/Smells Like Records is a collection of several of his projects that sprung from his New Music Monday tenure in LA. I've heard a pre-release of it and it absolutely smokes!! The Bone Structure cut especially is killer. This next show will be at Schubas, 3159 N. Southport, Chicago. The phone # is (773) 525-2508. Tickets can be purchased in advance from their web site at: http://schubas.com/info.html or at the door. December 22nd: PRESTON REED Here is what the music press has to say about Preston... "An amazing array of sounds. Acoustic guitarist Preston Reed literally hammers out his musical groove" Los Angeles Times, 1997 "A revolutionary guitarist who plays his instrument like a drum kit as much as a guitar." Guitar World, 1997 "One of the most unique and challenging acoustic guitar albums (Metal) ever...Reed's pieces are as visually and emotionally provocative as his technique is dazzling. Both guitar aficionados and casual listeners will find much to enjoy in this creative yet completely accessible work. Find it!" Jazz Times, 1996 "Reed's propulsive one-man grooves echo Soundgarden and Joni Mitchell. Rich tunings are worked over with body slaps, harmonic tickles, sweet melodies and confident passion." Guitar Player, 1996 "I want to rave about Preston Reed's METAL. Of all the guys who came up in the wake of Leo Kottke and John Fahey, Reed has taken the genre in the most innovative directions, both with technique and composition. The title track, an acoustic tribute to heavy metal, will drop you jaw." Playboy, 1996 "I listen to Preston Reed and my mouth just drops open. Not only does he play well, but he also has tremendous emotion in his music." Artie Traum in Wood & Steel interview, 1998 More info about Preston can be found at http://itascasw.com/prestonreed/ Please feel free to forward this list to other interested folks, or, better yet, if you know anyone who would like to receive it, drop me a line with their e-mail address. They had her in the studio >a few weeks ago but I wasn't paying too much attention at >the time (I was never really a Frente! fan)... Angie and Jesse have a band called Splendid and released a CD, "Have you got a name for it". It came out here in Australia about a month ago. I bought it that very day, but I'm not quite sure what to say about it. I'm somewhat disappointed, I think, because it doesn't sound like Frente. If I ever forgot that it was Simon, not Angie who was the writer in Frente, this record reminded me once and for all! It's just a pretty straigthforward pop record, not too bad, but not all that great - to tell the truth, it kind of got lost for me among many truly brilliant records I got around that time. But I will definitely go to see Splendid play if I get a chance, perhaps seeing them live will bring those songs to life for me. I hope so. There is an official Splendid website: www.splendidtheband.com but it was still in the design stage last time I looked. And a fan site, at http://members.tripod.com/splendidonline/main.html np. I was told it was the new album by Julie Miller, and responded, "Hunh. She sounds surprisingly like Lisa Cerbone." The employee, much to his credit, did _not_ respond with "Who?" but rather with, "Oh. I never thought of that before, but I understand why you might think that." Anyway, it's taken me 'til now to realize that I do, in fact, know who Julie Miller is, as she and her husband Buddy opened at the Cry Cry Cry show I saw last January at the Birchemere; she penned one of the tracks on the cover album ("By Way of Sorrow.") jeff n.p. _This Desert Life_, Counting Crows ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #370 **************************
