It's so much easer to decided whether or not I'm going to like an artist after sampling a bit. There have been a few discs that I bought without hearing based on descriptions posted only to find that the artist is nothing like what I imagined from the descriptions. I first saw it on an X-files site and I can't seem to find any place (on the internet) that can show me how to do this! I'm looking for the music to a work titled "Alfonsina", composed by someone in a Spanish-speaking country, possibly Spain, at least 25 years ago (and possibly much longer). No indication of whether any of the original band members remain, but the sound on the tracks there is at least as distant from "III" as "III" was from "Worry Dolls". She has a 4 track ep available through mp3.com, 2 tracks of which are available for download. "Billy Indian" has a Michelle Malone feel to it and I can't quite put my finger on "Be My Drug", but if it weren't for the Voice, Devils Wielding Scimitars wouldn't have entered my head at all listening to either track. I'll throw the two tracks into the "rotate over while at work" mp3 directory and see if they sublimate their way in, but at the moment, I don't find myself rushing to order... Bob np - Heather Duby "Post to Wire" ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 00:53:57 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Bryan Ferry OK, in answer to Sue's request and for anyone else interested, here's a Bryan Ferry concert review. The show was billed without mentioning any opening act. At about 8:20, a woman (Julia Thornton, as I later found out) came out and started playing the harp. She played two pieces (during one of which I overheard someone in back complaining, "I thought this was supposed to be soft rock!") and left the stage. Next a string quartet came out--four women, one or two in black leather pants. They also played two pieces, the first of which I ought to have recognized; I believe it's a standard recital piece for solo... cello? or maybe violin. Anyway, the second piece was the tango you might remember from *Schindler's List.* The sound quality of the amplification was pretty dismal. The quartet left the right side of the stage; on the left side came out a drummer, double bass, sax, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, piano and guitar players. They started in on a tune that my companion was sure was Glenn Miller. It was about at this point, I think, that the lights behind the backdrop curtain came on--lights like Christmas lights, to give the impression of a sky full of stars. A legacy of "glitter rock," I'm sure. Finally Bryan Ferry came out in black jacket, white shirt with unbuttoned collar, and black leather pants, looking (from up in the balcony where we were) like Gabriel Byrne with long, spindly legs. In general, the evening divided into three different kinds of music: 1) standard arrangements of old songs, 2) Bryan-Ferryized arrangements of old songs, and 3) Roxy Music numbers. I discovered I know a lot less about any of the three categories than I'd thought, so I'm not going to be able to offer titles for many of the songs. The crowd was definitely there to hear Bryan Ferry; there were a lot of requests yelled out from the audience. At one point after "Do The Strand" was yelled out for the umpteenth time, Bryan replied with "Be patient, please." The first three numbers were jazzy pieces whose names I don't know or was unable to take down. After that, the string quartet and the harp player joined the rest of the band and Bryan did his rendition of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes." This was followed by what he called a "really" old song, but evidently a Bryan Ferry arrangement or a Roxy Music piece. Next, "Lover Come Back to Me" backed by piano, guitar and drums. Then another Bryan Ferry arrangement? "The sea is wide... I'm drunk tonight/I'm seldom sober/Come all ye young men and lay me down." Then a '30s song--"I Can't Get Started With You"? Then a song backed by strings, harp and piano: "Some things that happen for the first time/Seem to be happening againg.../Seems that we have met before/But who knows where or when" Next a Bryan Ferry-style song that mentioned Casanova, with guitar, electric bass, keyboards, and tenor sax. Another Bryan Ferry-style song: "How rich in contrasts love can be/Sometimes I'm quite amused to see it twist and turn... " and ending with: "then you break down and cry." Bryan then left the stage and the band took up a jazz instrumental during which each of the trombone, trumpet, piano, clarinet and drums got solos. He then came back on stage to replace the piano player, performing "Havana Moon" (repeated line: "I wanna be alone...") backed by the strings. He then returned to the front of the stage to do a quiet number backed by piano and cello: "...Seems like leaves from my dreams/Cover cutting room floors..." (my friend said she heard something that sounded like "the last side of farewell." Next: "September Song" ("...For the days dwindle down/To a precious few/September.../November...") in Bryan Ferry style. Then a song attributed to Cole Porter: "You do something to me like nobody else..." Then another old song: "Falling in love again/Never wanted to/What am I to do?/Can't help it" Another old one, I think: "It was just one of those things..." Then a string of Bryan Ferry hits to close off, each with more energy than the last to get the audience pumped up: "Avalon" (At this point the stage light blazed on the mirrorball to cast sparkles over the audience.) "I Didn't Mean to Hurt You" "Let's Stick Together" Encore: "As Time Goes By" "Do the Strand" -- this really rocked!!! The convergence of so many different musical influences made for a very interesting evening, and Bryan Ferry made it very entertaining. We got upper balcony seats for $35 each, so I can't really say whether it's worth the $75 to see him in Oakland. But it was well worth what I paid.
