(new person alert!) *peeks in* Err, hi. ^_^ I ran across this list because I am one of those poor unfortunates who became enamored with the music of Happy Rhodes because of her newest album. I am now driving myself insane trying to find her earlier works. Argh! It's horrible, I've failed to find every single thing on the top 5% of my wishlist. I tend to like a lot of rare things, though. ^_^ I am probably the only anime-watching, video game RPG playing 20 year old here, am I right? (I mention that because a lot of the stuff on my wishlist is Japanese merchandise I just can NOT seem to import from anywhere. *sniffle*) I kinda feel out of place, but I've always been looking to broaden my music horizons and I think this list will introduce me to a lot of new (and old!) artists that I've previously been unaware of. Ah, it seems like I've jumped into the middle of a discussion of "goddesses" of music. ^_^ (Excuse me if I'm not familiar with all the terminology you use! *bows humbly*) I was pleasantly surprised to see someone mention Diamanda Galas, who is one of MY personal favorite female singer/songwriters. Oh, I must admit a lot of her work was hard to swallow at first, but... her music is so powerful and unlike anything I have ever heard. Just out of curiosity -- what's the general age group of this ML? ^_^ I am a college student, as you could probably surmise from my age. A computer science major, in fact. So, at the risk of completely contradicting myself, here's where I stand now: - - I support nomination of Kirstin Hersh, fully and enthusiastically! - - I'd like to propose (or second, if someone already beat me to it) nomination of P.J. Harvey: consistently brilliant, individual and suitably awe-inspiring. - - Someone mentioned Ani DiFranco - she certainly deserves some sort of recognition somewhere, and a year ago I'd probably support her nomination. But right now I'm not so sure; I was only lukewarm about Plastic Castle and as for Up...up", well, this is one of very few Cds I managed to part with when attempting to cull my collection, so I can hardly vote for her at this point. I admire her independence and achieving success entirely on her own terms, I see her as an inspiration and a model of independent artist, but her business acumen is not quite enough to make her a Goddess in my eyes - sorry. Yeah, let's vote! Finally, while I ramble on, let me mention my own personal Goddess: Crista Calero from a very obscure Sydney band, Kaktus Mantras. Not that I'd want to inlude her in Ecto Pantheon - I realise she'd only get one vote; nor was her music especially Ectoish, being as it was a mixture of heavy metal, industrial and Indian influences. Yet she was a Goddess to me - she had this spark, this presence, this light about her. She truly intimidated me, and not because she tried - she was always wonderfully warm and friendly. It's just that I was so absolutely in AWE of her talent, her voice and her presence... and then Kaktus Mantras broke up and she vanished without a trace. Not to fear- she hasn't vanished. I met her briefly a month or two ago and know what you mean - she has a presence. It's been known to have that effect from time to time. There's certainly more than a few artists I'd never have listened to before joining the list that I'm quite fond of now, Ani Difranco foremost among those. Of course, I've found myself not listening to much new music. I've owned the new Cocteau Twins (well, not that the music on it is "new" but I haven't heard 80% of it so) for two days now and I haven't heard any of it! Although I don't think it has anything to do with being raised in a monotheistic society, I agree that people seem (to me) to ready to give the 'goddess' label to their current favorite artist, and that 'goddess' status should not change just because someone becomes popular or puts out an album or two that we don't care for. Some people haven't been very fond of Jane Siberry's latest releases either, but no one is suggesting she is no longer goddess-worthy, as they are with Sarah M. for example. And then there are people like me who thinks that Up^6 is Ani's best album. I liked all of her earlier albums a lot, but they all sounded rather same-y to me. LPC started to branch out some, but on Up^6 she really started playing with her sound. Sure, I can see how others would find Up^6 boring and watered-down, but I find that it has more nuance than her other albums. To quote Ani, "I'm learning the spaces between have their own things to say." Up^6 is a darker, quieter album, but I find that I listen all the more closely because of that. And lyrically, I think it is her best effort yet (only the line "I wake up and my jaw aches / And the earth is full of earthquakes" really bothers me). All this is to say that I don't know that I would have supported Ani for godhood _before_ Up^6. > Some people haven't been very fond of Jane Siberry's latest releases > either, but no one is suggesting she is no longer goddess-worthy, as they > are with Sarah M. for example. (and I would argue against anyone who would > suggest it) I won't say whether Sarah should be dedeified, but I will point out one difference here. Jane (and Ani) are at least experimenting. They're trying new things, playing with their sound. I imagine that those who don't like their new material at least respect it. And there's still the chance that they will put out more material that their fans will enjoy. Sarah, though, doesn't seem to be experimenting--she just seems to be becoming more generic, and there's no sign that she'll be coming back, either. (Please attach a big fat IMHO to that paragraph, of course. I'm sure that someone will want to point out that I could like _Surfacing_ for the same reasons that I like Up^6, and I'm not sure that I have an answer for that.) Anyway, I suspect that everybody will agree that there are too many nominations for goddesses, but nobody will agree on which ones should be goddesses. So, keeping in mind the tastes of others, only Kristin and Ani really seem like shoe-ins to me. _Maybe_ Susan McKeown and Ingrid Karklins. Peter Gabriel should be an honorary goddess. And that's about it. If I had my way, though, I'd also add Dar Williams, Richard Shindell (honorary, again), The Nields (honorary for the Daves), and Katell Keineg. Oh, and Victoria Williams. And...OK, I'll stop. > Just out of curiousity, how was the original list of goddesses formulated? Divine manifestation, of course! Have fun... To me it comes down to the question of what qualifications an artist/group should have to get pantheon status, and what a pantheon means. Not just anyone should be in a pantheon -- these are the artists who inspire others, who have achieved something more than just the making of music. They have brought light, emotion, inspiration, energy into the lives of alot of people. Maybe they haven't done this with every album, but when you take a look at the breadth of their careers, it has been marked by innovation and experimentation. The ecto pantheon should be reserved for only a few great artists. I'd hate to see 20, 30, 40 artists in it -- the pantheon is a way of saying that these artists are the very best out there, that they hold a place in our collections that few others can reach. To water down the list is to water down the idea of a pantheon. So I have come to the conclusion that only five artists fit my personal pantheon. KaTe is #1, as she will always be even if she never makes another record. Tori, because she moves me in so many ways. Sarah, because her music has been such an important part of my life, even if I hated Surfacing. Also Sarah, because she has gone beyond the boundaries of creating music to really make a difference in the industry. Jane, because you never know what Jane will come up with, but you always know it will be amazing and mind-blowing. And Ani, because she makes incredible music and has rewritten the book on making it on your own, and re-opened the book on what a strong woman can look and sound like. That's it. There are many other artists who I love, but none of them have proven themselves (yet) to be pantheon material. ==> Valerie ps. Oh yeah, the Spice Girls. God bless you Neil! This is really her! And to think I've been trying to track her down for ages. In fact, I just put a notice on my website asking for any leads about her, but I certainly didn't expect to find the answer on Ecto. In that notice on my site I promised the first person to provide the answer will have a shrine with their likeness built in my backyard; so feel free to send me your picture and I'll get to it! Now I just have one more favour to ask: do you think with your Nettwerk connections you could somehow discover her email address? (I couldn't find it anywhere on the site!), I'd be really, really grateful... While browsing nettwerk site (which I find terribly confusing, but perhaps it's just me) I noticed Tara Mclean has a new album, "Passenger". It was released on 26th Oct, apparently. Does anyone have any comments? Has it even been mentioned on Ecto - if so it escaped my attention somehow... - ------------------------------------------------------ "Macintosh for Productivity, Linux for Development, Palm for Mobility, and Windows for Solitaire." - - spotted on a t-shirt @ macsurfshop.com - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Oct 2000 18:35:57 -0800 From: "Kristen Weissleader" Subject: Re: sarah mcgoblin dvd - -----Original Message----- From: Dan Knoff To: ecto@smoe.org Date: Friday, October 15, 1999 7:30 PM Subject: Re: sarah mcgoblin dvd >It's also kind of interesting how a lot of people who liked her earlier >stuff don't like the newer stuff. It had absolutely nothing to do with radio airplay or subject since I tend to be attracted to the blending of sound in music and voice. She changed her sound from what inspires me. Something was lost in the music's spirit and perhaps that it is a characteristic more in the listener than the artist. It just all feels so mundane to me, no spark, no magic. I'm done blabbering... It was only released in Canada and the US release (on Capitol Records) isn't even going to take place until like Feb. 2000... You can get it online at www.absound.ca, the nettwerk site, chapters.ca, places like that... You can also hear it at the Nettwerk site and see a clip from the "If I Fall" video... Anyway, I got an advanced copy in late Aug. after I did a show w/ Tara (who is a huge influence of mine) and was pretty surprised at the changes... It is nothing like "Silence"... very different... The sound is much fuller, more lush... lots of trip hop effects and drum machine sounds and all that... the vocals sound really good, the writing is good, but it is very dif't from her debut... I have mixed feelings on it ... on one hand, it's a strong CD and she's obviously grown a lot and is 100x more confident now than when she started (which is evident just by looking at her, let alone seeing her live)... on the other hand, maybe she's changed a bit too much... I don't know, she's just very LA now... still awesome and she's so nice...but different. :) Jessica www.aquezada.com/jess ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 22:59:21 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: sarah mcgoblin dvd On Sun, Oct 29, 2000 at 06:35:57PM -0800, Kristen Weissleader wrote: > I have tried to pin point why, but I just don't really care for her > Surfacing cd. Which reminds me: it's struck me that there's a very concrete probable reason for the commercial success of the songs on Surfacing as opposed to many on FtE (I'm insufficiently familiar with her earlier records to guess farther back): The songs' titles are easily discernable from the lyrics. I still don't know the titles to many of the songs on FtE after listening to them gerjillions of times -- with everything except "Good Enough", "Hold On", "Ice Cream", and maybe "Mary", the titles do not appear prominently enough in the songs to form reminders when one looks at track listings or at the singles in stores. On Surfacing, which I've listened to far less, I can look at the track list and be reminded of the songs themselves. This is, I think, an improvement as of Surfacing -- it has nothing to do with the music itself, but shows a keener sense of how to get people to connect with the songs as products. (Nothing that there's anything wrong with that -- though I still don' care for much of the CD...) - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Oct 1999 22:53:51 -0700 (PDT) From: John Drummond Subject: Katell Keineg Y'all: - --- JoAnn Whetsell wrote: > np: Katell Keinig _Jet_ Okay... so I had bought a copy of Sade's greatest hits album for this boy I was dating as a cute little gift or whatever... and then he went bastard on me, so I decided it was time to return the CD... and I'd lost the receipt like an idiot but it was still in its original packaging and things, so I was able to exchange it for store credit... and as I was looking through the CDs, my eyes were immediately for some reason drawn to the store's one copy of _Jet_ and thought, "It's fate, I have been putting off getting this for some reason, and I'm going to give it a try..." so I picked it up and looked through the used CDs and THEN I found a *perfect* copy of it used for only $1.99!!! And so I was like, "Okay, now it's REALLY fate," and so I got that and Dot Allison's album, which they had... and I totally didn't get into _O seasons O castles_ like at all, but apparently a lot of other people felt the same way about that album but loved _Jet_, and so I brought it home and listened to it and it's amazing... and I taped it for my car immediately... and listened to it all day... and it really makes me think of hmm... it's like what Veda Hille would've become if she had Loreena McKennitt's totally historical European sensibilites... not necessarily "world music", but that same flirting-with-Celtica (wow, isn't THAT an awful term? I just coined it... somebody stop me before something bad happens) vibe that Loreena just immersed herself in... but with Loreena, it wasn't flirting, it was absolute love... and of all non-"modern and Western" musical forms... love that... anyhow... so now I'm into Katell after having slammed her first album so badly. *giggle* I'm so ashamed...
