I can fill you in on this, perhaps... I just bought an other CD by E-Clypse featuring Jemma Price, which is "A tribute to Tori Amos". According to the booklet, there's also a Kate Bush tribute by the same artist. I think it is safe to say that they attempted to make carbon copies of the original songs (with the exception of "Baker baker", which is played on guitar instead of piano), but failed because of the limited talent of both the singer and the accompanying band. Since the CD only costs 5 UKP generally, it's not that much of a rip-off, but it's definitely not one of those discs I will play regularly myself. I expect this is only interesting for those of you who buy cover versions on principle. (Myself, I attempt to buy all cover versions of Kate Bush and Tori Amos songs, so I guess I will have to find the tribute to Kate Bush soon too....) I personally don't mind the new (though unoriginal) moniker -- to me, it seems to be the only appropriate way for Emil Adler and Julie Flanders to let everyone know they're still writing and recording the same kind of music they did with October Project, but by changing the name slightly, they're not doing a disservice to the former members -- especially Mary Fahl. I did have to laugh at one internet posting that predicted further break-ups and regroupings until we're stuck with February Project. ;-) >is it fair to compare the original october project with the new >one-month-later version? I'd say (like you) that it is; if Emil and Julie didn't want comparisons, then they *should* have more radically altered the band name. Comparing November Project to October Project has its pluses and minuses, however. On the plus side, without its ties to the late, great October Project, I (and I'm sure many other fans) would be a lot slower to discover and sample (and give more than a passing chance to) November Project. So this has to help them from a marketing perspective at least, and I'm more prone to give these new songs a chance until I've learned to appreciate them instead of instantly dismissing them based on the rather blah vocals. However, from my past experience with October Project, Emil and Julie have never written any songs that have immediately grabbed me (with the exception of "Bury My Lovely"). What they *do* write is music that is subtle and pretty and might strike the listener as unexceptional unless they give it the benefit of repeated listens. Once familiar, the music of October Project never got old to me; it only got better. The point I'm trying to make is, without those other-worldly vocals of Mary Fahl (which is what kept me listening to OP's debut until I was hooked on the music), November Project have their work cut out for them. Maryanne Marino is a decent vocalist, judging from their EP. But with an original lineup that included TWO great vocalists in both Fahl and Marina Belica, fans are bound to be disappointed if she's anything less than stellar. Her vocals remind me somewhat of Trisha Yearwood's and Jewel's, and at times while listening to her voice I felt like I was hearing the first-time-studio work of a college student hoping for a big break. The rest of the time, I was trying to imagine how these five songs -- which hold up quite well against previous OP material -- would sound coming out of Mary Fahl's mouth. Bottom line, I'd have to say the EP is an almost must-buy for the remaining October Project fans, even though disappointment in it is almost inevitable. I'm just hoping that even at half its former glory, November Project manages to improve to create an album's worth of material worthy of the [insert month here] Project moniker. >almost perversly, i bought the 5-track cd they offered. i enjoy 4 of the >songs, and the vocals are decent on the recording (studio tweaking?). I'm curious which one you don't care for, CJ. For me, even OP's weakest material was similar enough in scope to everything else they recorded that I'd have a hard time choosing lemons, and the same is true for this EP. One thing I will say about the EP, though, is that I feel it improves from beginning to end -- the last two songs are the best. Sarah Slean and Emily Bezar and Kym Brown and other up-and-coming Ecto Goddesses should be given that distinction... and umm... perhaps this should be more of a sidenote, an Award or something... just like I don't think Goddess is a genre as such... just a heavy distinction... but anyhow, I'm going to go now... but remember, Ecto Goddesses must be folks met with across-the-board approval on Ecto... and that doesn't mean that everybody has to like them, of course, but that everybody can respect them as artists and people who have contributed greatly to music and the enrichment of our lives. Not to say that we can't discuss it here as well... I don't know if a some sort of vote is the best way to go about this, though of course I don't have any better suggestions. I really don't see a broad consensus arising for too many of the many artists whose have been lauded at various times on ecto because in many cases a fair percentage of ectophiles may not have even had the chance to hear them. I had sort of assumed that a realization of the difficulties of this was the reason that nothing had ever come of that discussion. Personally I think Kristin and Susan both belong on the list, and I'd even agree with Ingrid being there even though I'm personally not a fan. Oh, and I do think that a "fallen goddess" category is probably a bad idea. ;) Mike np: Emily Bezar -- Four Walls Bending (yet again) nr: All Tomorrow's Parties by William Gibson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Oct 1999 21:48:09 -0600 From: "Jeffrey Hanson" Subject: Ecto Goddesses Hello all, Neile, I think your suggestion of re-opening the goddess topic for discussion is a good one--and should be done every few years or so. However, perhaps only because I was raised in a monotheistic society, I hate to see the term get bandied about too easily. :) For me, goddesses really have to be personally creative, enduring (i.e., their status doesn't change easily from album to album), and, to some degree or other, awe-inspiring. While I don't object to the inclusion of any of the ones listed so far, none of them yet fufill that last category (at least for me personally--though I waver on Sinead--she may deserve it solely for The Lion and the Cobra--not to say she hasn't done anything else good--she has, but can't say she lived up to the potential that that album demonstrated). Whatever happened to her upcoming Atlantic album anyway? The only other artists that I'd nominate would include: Haris Alexiou (a true Greek goddess!) Artists I might consider: Annie Lennox - she just may bea little too goofy to be a goddess Siouxsie Sioux - it seems she deserves some sort of title, though goddess may not be it Maria McKee Lisa Gerrard Well, I guess arguing about the pantheon is basically arguing about religion--it's pretty hard to convince anyone else of your beliefs, and it seems to me it's a pretty personal decision.
