Many of you may already know that, but I was surpised--though I was half expecting a new album given the number of performances they've been involved in lately. Sound samples are available at amazon.com. In other new release news, jazz/cabaret singer Ann Hampton Calloway's new one is due out October 19th as well (finally--it was originally supposed to be out last April). Jeff Hanson n.p. If anyone has a chance to see one of these shows come through your area, definitely check it out. The talent on this tour is incredible. We had Ellen Rosner, BeJae Fleming, Leah-Carla Gordone, Ani's Whisper, and Audrey Becker play our place, and it was one of the best concerts I've seen this year. Every artist was so different, but such high-quality. Definitely worth checking out. Their tour schedule is on their homepage, http://www.indiegrrl.com. - --mark Mitchell A. Pravatiner" Subject: Rubygrass Last Friday I went to a show by Rubygrass, an excellent Chicago rock band, whom I had heard previously when they opened for Mary Cutrufello a couple of months ago. Their overall sound reminds me of 10,000 Maniacs in the days when Natalie Merchant was with them (I am less familiar with their current sound). Their lead singer is a woman named Oskar Saville (I am not making this up), who to me sounds somewhat like Merchant. Saville has a terrific stage presence, reminiscent (unsurprisingly) of that of Merchant, or for that matter, of Happy herself, based on what I have read about them. She is animated and funny, and connects very well with the audience, who eventually was dancing and singing along _en masse_. I found it a most worthwhile experience. I bought their CD, _Firefly_, at the show, and it too is superb. Their website, www.rubygrass.com, lists stores in Chicago that carry it. Since one of them is Tower Records, the latter's 800 number may be able to supply it to those of you outside the area. And let us all know how it was. :) Fantabulous, indeed, as it's part of the pseudo-annual Women On Stage festival at the West End Cultural Centre (www.pangea.ca/~wecc) which has an excellently abstract line-up for October 22-24. Oct. 22 - Jane Siberry (solo with a grand piano) Oct. 23 - Veda and the band Christine Fellows (who is like a cross between Kristin Hersh and Lisa Germano with more art-folk-pop-darkness and a definite Veda edge) Kathleen Edwards (a 19 year old with incredible percussive guitar, oddly satisfying vocal twists and a violin...although apparently she can't do all three at once) Oct. 24 - Katherine, Cate and Crowe (featuring Cate Friesen, who has had Veda on her albums in the past and has just put out an excellent album that is far beyond anything she's done in the past...also includes Susan Crowe and Katherine Wheatley) So if you're in Manitoba, get to this weekend (as it's also a benefit for the Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre, which is nice). Every performance of Veda's at the WECC have been brilliant, intimate and incredible. I was kind of interested in seeing this show, but I already have tix to see Richard Thompson in Baltimore. And it's really Kristin I want to see, and I think I'll get much more of her doing a solo show at the 1/9th the size Ottobar (in Baltimore).
