For everyone else who might wonder about that, the Kennedy Center has been running free shows on its Millenium Stage for several years now. Shows conclude before anything happens in the larger (pay) theaters. Many cool people have played there over the years. I called the Ottobar (410 752-OTTO) and verified that Kristin Hersh is playing on Monday, October 25. So you have 2 weeks to perfect your excuses. :) Here's a good start. Shows at the Ottobar usually start really late. The Ottobar typically hosts pretty small shows and doesn't regularly have advance tickets. For this show, they have gone all out and printed up 100 tix, of which they have already sold roughly 50. You (or, i guess more appropriately, I) could go to the Ottobar to get them, or you can call the above number and charge them. Which seems a touch silly for an $8 (!!!!) ticket, but not a bad idea if you are driving up from DC. Wait, Jeff is queer! This is a shocking revelation. And to think, I spent hours sitting next to him in the car. I hope nothing has happened to me. >last week I commented to a coworker, after one of the cleaning >staff made the comment, "Y'know, I don't think I've ever been >told to have a wonderful Columbus Day before." Well, those of us that get Columbus Day off are regularly wishing each other a Happy Columbus Day. Any weekday I don't have to work is a wonderful day. (And the weather on this one was spectacular.) I guess Baltimore's gay community got a jump on everyone by having their NCOD block party yesterday. I wandered through it on my way back from visiting the new Contemporary Museum (Joe, you will probably have to make a trip. I thought it was pretty mediocre, but it does have pieces of art by John Cage, and some really amazing videos by someone I can't remember. And for mild ecto content, they had a wall of pictures of early Laurie Anderson performances and Puppet Motel on a computer. Wonder if I'll ever find my autographed copy of Stories from the Nerve Bible .). The block party was a pretty drab affair. I'd have expected something more flamboyant :) neal np: Nouveau Flamenco - Ottmar Liebert ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 01:13:38 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: dido&flemingandjohn at mixfest, plus lori carson and more in boston Mixfest was this past weekend in boston (i know, i reported it wrong a couple weeks ago. whatever) The Nields were there, Ellis Paul didn't make it, Dido had her band minus the backup singer and the keyboardist, Fleming and John actually got to play AFTER Ben Folds Five (they've been opening for BFF for a while), and the whole shebang was late by an hour. Dido's set was very stripped down compared to her big tour. The guitarist stuck with one guitar and mainly played chords and finger picked lines as opposed to his gadget-laced fuzzing about in previous shows; the DJ's scratching was limited to a just a handful of instances on a couple songs; and the drummer played the entire set on his djembe (which was hooked up to a loop processor). A friend spoke to the Dj after their set and he reported that they were going to record an album in this more stripped down incarnation and release it in Europe, and they would probably be back to tour here fairly soon. I was again entranced by Dido and was even more sure that a) she somehow channels Eleanor McEvoy and b) she really has Irene Jacob's facial expressions. Fleming and John were very loud and a lot of fun. My first time seeing them live. Fleming's voice has no problem reaching out and smacking you around a bit, or soaring up into soprano/opera style. coming up in boston include shows by Lori Carson at the Middle East, Kristin hersh and Brendan Perry at the Paradise, Susan Werner at Club Passim, Keb Mo at berklee (yay!), Natalie MacMaster at Berklee (yay!), Letters to Cleo at the Paradise (as well as Kay Hanley doing a residency at the Kendall on tuesdays), and that's all that's sticking in my head at the moment. And speaking belatedly about Irene Jacob and "Red", I love the soundtrack to the movie...i love the movie too...one of my constant favorites...have to watch it at least twice a year...it's playing at the Brattle Theater in Cambridge some upcoming friday...speaking of which, the Miyazaki tribute wraps up next weekend and they'll be showing My Neighbor Totoro! :) but the dubbed version :( I've been catching all the showings the past couple sundays and have enjoyed them all. And, hey, a couple sundays ago while waiting to catch the bus back down Massachusetts Ave to Boston, Natalie Portman walked right in front of me. Maybe I should go to the upcoming Ben Lee show so that i can have Claire Danes walk in front of me...
