True, Meredith took the initiative to organise this thing, but I don't believe anyone was excluded from having their input once the ball was rolling. Our attempts to help out don't have to be dependant on them, especially since I don't recall the organisers asking anyone to bail them out. Some things (many things, if I really think about it) are NOT best done by committee. Meth and Chuck had the contacts and initiative to think of it *and* make it happen. Committees are good at the thinking but not so great at the doing. And with that line-up, whatever in the world would you call it other than ectofest? If THEY hadn't called it ectofest, *WE* would have, right!?! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 1999 22:23:12 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: ectofest Hi, This is going to be my last post to the list at large regarding ectofest. There seem to be some raging misunderstandings out there regarding the festival that I want to clear up once and for all. First of all, Fog: I *was* contacted by one of the ectofest performers directly specifically regarding our discussions of distribution of the recordings that are out there. As I stated previously, that's what spurred my original post on the subject. Second: I have already disclosed here all I know about the financial status of the event. I'm sure Chuck has more details, but I haven't talked to him in a while (we've both been trying to get our lives back on track). I'll leave it to him to give more information on that, since he'll have it from the source and will therefore be less likely to lose anything in the translation. Finally: Charley (who has been off base about this event from the start) seems to think that this was my event: my idea, my backyard, etc. Truth be told, this was Chuck Stipak's idea. The charities were selected by and coordinated through Chuck, the site was selected and arranged by Chuck, in fact *everything* was done by Chuck except actually booking the artists -- that was my gig. The list of artists we invited came from the names that floated to the top when we discussed the concept with the other ectophiles in the area. But without Chuck, his dedication and expertise (not to mention his knack for knowing simply *everybody*), this thing never would have gotten off the ground. I *wish* Kenosia Park were in my backyard. I miss living by the shore of a lake. In actuality it's more in Chuck's backyard -- you can see his house from there. I had to drive 45 minutes to get there from my house. As I explained way back when we covered this before, there was a reason why we didn't announce ectofest before we did: without anything concrete to announce, it simply made no sense. We had no venue, we had no confirmed artists ... we weren't going to get people excited over nothing. True, we could have announced it maybe a couple weeks before we did -- but neither Chuck nor I wanted to say anything until we had Happy signed, sealed, and delivered. So we wanted to have the first big announcement be a memorable one -- I don't think that's a crime. I'm not going to apologize to Charley for being part of something that he didn't give prior approval to first. I didn't feel like I needed to when this came up back in July either, especially considering the supportive response I received here. I am, however, going to apologize to the list at large for Charley. For reasons still unclear to me Charley has had major issues with me personally for a long time, and I'm sorry that had to spill over onto the list at large. If Chuck (or anyone else) had handled the communication to the list about ectofest, I'm sure Charley never would have been motivated to speak out against it, and you all wouldn't have had to deal with his vitriol ... well, at least on this issue, anyway. I urge everyone to keep tuned to for all the news on how to get the remaining merchandise and make additional donations to the charities. (That information *will* be updated soon, I promise!) I sincerely thank you all for your support of this event. Like it or not, it happened -- and it is going to happen again. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Sep 1999 22:31:01 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Re: Ectofest At 09:47 PM 9/27/99 -0500, Joseph Zitt wrote: >I'd just like to reiterate that your sense of betrayal is not shared by, >well, anyone else with whom I've been in contact, as far as I know. >Having staged such events, and seen the level of sniping that can take >place, I strongly suspect that an event organized from the gitgo by a >group as large, distributed, and amorphous as Ecto would never actually >take place. I agree completely, though of course in the eyes of some my opinion doesn't count since I'm Meredith's friend and therefore obviously must think that she can do no wrong. I'm not going to waste anyone's time with a point by point defense of ectofest and the hard work that Meredith and Chuck (who is probably grateful that he isn't the one having crap thrown at him) put into it, though I will say that I wish the ectofest has managed to be as much of a success financially as it was in every other way so that people who need to snipe because they feel left out would have had one less thing to bitch about. After a fun afternoon at Fenway on Saturday, JeffW, woj and I went across Lansdowne Street to Axis to catch Lamb live. The capsule review: if any of the dates on their tour are going to be anywhere near you, you *must* go (that means you, Neile! Seattle on 10/10, I believe is the date :). They were incredible. I don't know what I was expecting - something more like Portishead, I guess, with a bored singer going through the motions while an enigmatic personage hid in the back fiddling with knobs all night. What I got was a rollicking quintet that looked like it might be more at home thrashing out punk tunes, making wonderful sounds with real instruments as well as technology, squeezing every ounce of energy out of the crowd then tossing it back fivefold. It was, simply, a mind-numbingly wonderful show. And Loud! Yack. At one point my Sox cap literally almost flew off my head, the bass was resonating so intently. Tasty. The band was having a *ton* of fun. There were some technical difficulties starting out, but they handled it with all good humor, and once they got going they never looked back. I don't know the names of anyone in the band, but the bass player was a freak of nature -- he played an electric upright bass, and we were all wondering aloud by the end of the night what a duel between he and Lindsey Horner would be like. The drummer was really good, and the horn player (Laurence Fishburne's missing twin - we kept expecting to hear an announcement that we had fallen into the Matrix and wouldn't be able to get out) was great too, adding just the right wailing, well, bleats to the tunes in all the right spots. The technology guy (the one turning all the knobs) was actually fun to watch - he had a large amount of toys around him, and he did cool things with all of them. For a couple songs he came out to the front of the stage and played a couple hand drums, too, which was cool. And the singer -- I liked her voice in person much better than on the record (and I like it on the record too). She looked kind of like Mary Ramsey, which was disconcerting, especially when she cracked a joke. They played quite a bit from _Fear of Fours_, and listening to it afterwards I have a renewed appreciation for it. I hadn't been able to figure out most of the lyrics from the disc, but live I could tell what the songs were about. The club was packed, too -- we had gotten there near first in line and ended up pretty close to the stage, which was a good thing. Everyone was really into it, and didn't quite need all the encouragement they were getting from the band, but it was fun anyway. There was much screaming throughout, but since the band had clearly asked for it, I didn't mind and was even happy to oblige. All in all, an amazing experience, not to be missed. That's an order. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 00:01:07 -0400 From: Ted Jacobs Subject: Happy's Hamsters I remembered this evening that at Ectofest, Happy Rhodes made mention of a dancing hamster webpage that enthralled her, so I went surfing.
