As I've previously only heard her on the Adiemus albums, it's nice to hear her singing some english lyrics, although there is some of the Adiemus style chanting included. She covers Peter Gabriel's 'Mercy Street', and she has writing credits on most of the other songs. Also got a CD I've been hearing a lot about for a while, 'candycoatedwaterdrops' by Plumb. I haven't been able to keep this one out of my CD player.. love Tiffany Arbuckle's vocals. CDNOW and Amazon both have samples, my favorites so far are 'Late Great Planet Earth' and 'Stranded' which is produced by Glenn Rosenstein, who did Grey Eye Glances' Eventide, he also plays guitar and mellotron on it. - -- +-----------------------------------------------+ + dave + + Visit Sideshow Bob's House of Wax and Waffles + + Female vocalists, Christian, and Polish music + + -=-=- and the fabulous Kasia Kowalska -=-=- + + http://magpage.com/~sspan/ + +-----------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 10:57:31 EDT From: SpiritWe@aol.com Subject: Rachael Sage Page: Sidewalk Cafe This Friday! After not quite 24 hours, my "survey" shows 60 requests for about 72 copies. I'm not an "old hat" trader, but I've done a few here and there over the years. I understand, agree and accept the etiquette points (see original below) as such, but I will mention my own policy: I will accept cash in lieu of trade. Reasons: (1) Trade is barter, which like everything else in economics is simply an exchange of personal assets. Cash is a personal asset. (2) People who don't have CDR burners may have never looked for or seen blank media in a store. They don't know if they're paying too much, or buying an inferior brand. (3) People may also be unclear on appropriate packaging for mailing CDRs. (4) For every correctly executed B&P trade, 2 mailers are discarded, requestor pays for a round trip for the CD, and generally has to make a trip to the post office. Send cash and its 1 mailer (from me), a small envelope, CD postage one way, and a walk to the nearest mailbox. More environmentally friendly. (5) Bear in mind we are talking about an 80 minute blank for this show. Giving me a 74 is not really fair. Asking the requestor to find an 80 minute blank is also often unreasonable. I hope not to start a huge pedantic argument here over this, I just want to tell you what I personally consider acceptible in trade for CDRs. Of course, if you offer recordings, or B&P, I am fine with that. But if cash is easy for you, its easy for me too. And as for cash, if I take the AVERAGE cost to me, of blank CDRs, jewel cases, CD sticky labels, decent paper for the cover/backplate, a cushioned mailer, and postage anywhere in the USA, it comes out to about $4 and change, give or take. Most people will volunteer $5 and consider it a steal. So that's what I suggest. And if there is no cover etc available or desired, you just want a recorded unlabeled disc and no frills, fine. $3 covers the bare CDR in a cheap mailer and postage for the USA. These numbers are based on my experience distributing Ectopia. That one cost a little more, actually due to the full booklet, and the extra nice paper for the wonderful artwork offered to the project. And the fact that overburning 80 minute CDRs had an attrition (failure) rate of almost 30%. Plus I went thru inkjet cartridges like water. I'd like to do a tree to share the workload, but what do you do if you want the paperwork? In particular, sticky labels? I never used to use them but I've grown kinda fond of them now, particularly after all that Sharpie controversy. At any rate, I'll contact Christian offline to try to decide which master we should use. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Joe Casadonte Sent: Tuesday, September 14, 1999 11:18 PM To: Christian Reiter; ecto@smoe.org Subject: Re: Happy Ectofest CD...organization? There also seems to be 2 sources, so maybe we should figure out between the two which has better sound, and tree that one. For people who are not used to "tape trading", there are some general guidelines to follow: 1. No one (except the artist, of course) can make a profit from this. This is the Prime Directive, for the Trek folks out there. Most people (myself included) take this to mean that no cash exchanges hands at all. I make exceptions when trading overseas, allowing the person to send cash or a check instead of CDs, as it's far cheaper (see #2). 2. There is a concept called B&P, which stands for Blanks & Postage. The basic gist of it is that folks without recording equipment or without anything to trade, send blanks (tapes, CDs, DATs, whatever) and return postage to the person who is making copies. That person then makes the copies (using the blanks) and sends them back (using the postage). No money changes hands, and no one profits in any way (except in the Karma department). 3. People who insist on doing "2-for-1" B&P deals are generally regarded as something lower than pond scum (not to give pond scum a bad name). 4. A Tree is an excellent way for HQ shows to be shared, because it is an organized distribution (sometimes including several hundred people). A tree starts with the Seed, which is the show being treed. When a tree is announced people have until a certain time to sign-up. You can sign-up as either a Branch or a Leaf. A branch makes copies of the show for others. A leaf just gets a copy. The Tree Administrator is the lucky sucker that gets to keep track of the whole thing. I'd be willing to administer the tree if there's enough interest in having an official tree. Any thoughts? A few thoughts: Are 80 minute CD-Rs universally playable? If not, it might be worth editing 6 minutes out of the performance. This might also lead to a lesser failure rate. Not yet having listened intently to the whole, I suspect that this could be done. If you'd like, I could take a shot at it, given a CD-R of the original .wav or a dupe of the Minidisk. I've gotten pretty adept at editing these kinds of things. I suspect we could save several minutes editing out some of the more technical, less funny banter about the sound system here and there. $5 seems like a reasonable compensation to me. However, I would think it more significant to clear it with the artist if money is involved. That said, I'd really like to see this happen! n.p, Rasputina: How We Quit the Forest (which I just got for $1, as well as CDs by Peter Himmelman, Soul Asylum, Charlie Haden, Lili Haydn, Caspar Brotzmann, Boyz II Men, and others, for $1 or less each at a local used wrecka stow. I much prefer cash for many of the reasons mentioned. In fact, I'd rather pay more cash just to avoid the trips to stores to buy CD-R's and post offices to buy and send mailing stuff. Plus, we should definitely round up to pay for general cost of various supplies, like the printer cartridges. No point in someone having to pay for their generosity. >And as for cash, if I take the AVERAGE cost to me, of blank CDRs, jewel >cases, CD sticky labels, decent paper for the cover/backplate, a cushioned >mailer, and postage anywhere in the USA, it comes out to about $4 and >change, give or take. I really really like the idea of charging more and donating the proceeds to the charities. The disk would still be a steal at $10, and $350 (or more!) to charity is pretty good. Maybe a suggested donation of $10, and people can elect to send $5 for whatever reason.
