I had the great fortune of hearing Happy for the very first time in at a live show at ectofest last weekend. What a great discovery! For a wannabe electronic musician such as myself, I found her story and her method rather inspiring! I have a feeling I can't be the only one who, after a show like that, goes home and immediately punches on the synths and the sequencer ;-) Got the Many Worlds CD, and I think at the moment my favorite is the title track. It's the one that hooked me for good at the show (was it the second in the set?). I like the lyrics especially - very inspirational and movitating without being overly corny. Now here's the question, and I have a feeling it's a very naive one - Why the alternate title "Jork"? I poked around a bit and couldn't find any explanation of this. Another question: I was delighted to learn that Happy sang a cover of the Gabriel song, "Here Comes the Flood", since that song is one of my favorites! Is it really true that this isn't on any available recording? I'd love to hear how Happy would sing and orchestrate this one! Well, enough for now. She had to save it as something, and there were a Bjork album around where she was sitting so she ended up removing the B and calling the song "Jork". > > Another question: I was delighted to learn that Happy sang a cover of > the Gabriel song, "Here Comes the Flood", since that song is one of my > favorites! On the live disc, one track is called "Cloud in my Hands." Does anyone know if this is supposed to be either "Tear in You Hands" or "Cloud on my Tongue"? Or is it a b-side I don't know about? Ok, I could be wrong, but I do believe I heard Tori talking about how it was one of those songs that she kinda messed up while playing and "cross mojonated" the two songs. She does that quite often, actually, but I think it's cute. Also, I do believe that, according to the latest Entertainment Weekly, Randy Newman says that Sarah has recorded the ballad he wrote for the upcoming Toy Story sequel. I hope this doens't mean she'll become Celine Dion's replacement when Celine goes into semi-retirement next year. At least I like Randy Newman as a songwriter and so I don't begrudge sarah this move. What else...sarah's gonna be on Rosie on monday...she'll be on fox on tuesday performing with sheryl crow...apparently, she won't be on the Buffy soundtrack coming out on October 19th. Songs by Garbage, Bif Naked, K's Choice, Velvet Chain, the Sundays (Wild horses, of course), Rasputina, Guided By Voices, and -hee hee- Alison Krauss and Union Station will be on the soundtrack along with the theme music by Nerf Herder and some original score stuff. Laura Love is one of the most original and talented American practitioners of the art. Originally she billed herself as "Afro-Celtic," a term I'm still not sure applies, but since no one seems to know what the term means, I'll go along with it. Mouth Music she's not. On the other hand, as she said to the crowd at the only live performance I've had the privilege to see, "I'm liberal and queer, and proud of it." Certainly her liberalism permeates her lyrics, but I can and do ignore that. What is truly fascinating his her sense of pace and rhythm in performance either recorded or live, and usually without benefit of a percussionist with a "usual" drum kit. And, while I'm not a big fan of "energy" for its own sake (too many think that playing fast and loud equals artistic achievement) she certainly makes it work. I'm an unreserved fan and proudly framed my autographed "Pangaea" cd blurb. To get your feet wet, I'd suggest an early compilation on Putumayo called, originally enough, The Laura Love Collection. My two cents. Peter Clark ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 21:13:52 -0400 From: Mark Miazga Subject: Re: forever dusty > > 1. I dunno, Peter. Kinda snide retort. Bet you don't know who Jill Jack is. www.jilljack.com Anyhow, I'm betting Laura Love will do a fine cover nonetheless of "Son of a Preacher Man". Her solo-electric bass cover of Nirvana's "Come As You Are" from a few years ago still sends shivers down my spine. She's really a fine artist, although I haven't gotten into her latest album as much as "Octoroon". Jill Jack does do the finest live cover of the song I've ever heard (although Dusty's "original" version was a cover as well), although Joan Osborne did a nice version of it on her "Early Recordings" CD. - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 143 West Akers Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 353-4936 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. It's a highlight of my day to check the postings to see if there are any more artists that I've missed. I've become the despair of those always-ready-to-serve record store clerks in this one-horse town who look at me as a castaway from the mother ship when I show them my new, revised want list. Laura Love is one of my personal faves, who languished on that list for a long time because no one knew who the hell she is. I also have the impression that she is somewhat burdened (though I doubt she would think so) by a perception that she is an artist that has sole appeal to girls who like girls. (I was one of a very small handful of guys at her concert.) I'd rather spread the word about her value as a singer/sonwriter of great ability, politics and playmates notwithstanding. As for Jill Jack, never heard of her. By recommendation, she goes on The (dreaded) List. The best cover I've heard of the song was done by Susan McKeown. There's just something about her voice that really meshes well with that song. I think I recall writing about her here after I first heard her at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest a couple of summers ago. Her energy was so high that Bruce Cockburn, who appeared immediately after her and closed the night, was a bit of a letdown. ;) (We all stopped dancing. ;) I also have the impression that she is somewhat > burdened (though I doubt she would think so) by a perception > that she is an artist that has sole appeal to girls who like > girls. Truly? Okay, I'm bi, but I've always seen guys on their feet and dancing at her shows here in Boulder. There have been straight women there too. She did a great E-town taping (oh, Odetta at E-town was sublime tonight -- if anyone wants more details, ask!) a couple of years ago with Dan Bern as the second on the bill. I was wondering how they would mix, but it worked. I've seen mixed crowds of gay and straight when she's played here, and to be honest, the women often tended to eye Julie Wolf just as much when she played with Laura. ;) I like Laura Love's politics (hey, I do live in Boulder, after all ;), I think she's a good performer (how many women also play bass and are lead vocalists?), and when I've spoken with her, she's been very nice -- has seemed quite "real," so to speak. Well, I was going to propose, against my better judgement, a possible dc ectogathering if any other people were interested in the show, but when I went to verify the date, I found out that it was already sold out! There is still a chance that I will try to go anyway. I have lot's of luck at buying tix for sold out shows. I got great day-of-the-show tix for ani in Albuquerque (not sold out), and wonderful tix to the sold out Tori show. And this weekend I got passable tix in the sold out pavillion for R.E.M.
