This morning I finished downloading Happy's Ectofest performance, the whole 117MB - it only took me two days :) I have never seen or heard Happy in the context of live performance with stage banter and feedback and all so this turned out to be a bit of a revelation for me; hearing her as a human being rather than just a voice and the mind behind the record makes it different, yes, closer and more accessible and indeed more real. And, a minor breakthrough - now I know that she actually posesses a sense of humour, something I've read on the list but always found hard to accept on some level. Not that I don't believe you guys, it's just that difference between second-hand knowledge and direct experience... I wish I had been there... great thanks to Chris Montville who made this possible. BTW, the sound quality is great! How was this recorded? Not directly from the console I suppose, as there are moments when conversations around can be clearly heard. But I guess it's a tribute to the fans that they never seem to compete with the music, the way your average public usually does! np - nothing; I've had music on all day and need a bit of silence. nd - "now downloading" :) Rachel Sage. - ------------------------------------------------------ "When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Its pretty unlikely I´ll get a chance to see Happy live in concert any time soon, but this kind of recording is the closest one could get. The quality is really astonishing, and it´s much more authentic than any 'official' live recording, with all the joking, tuning, next 'trucks' on it. Somehow I´m not *really* surprised that Happy is a Monty Python devotee... And coincidentally it all just barely manages to fit on a 80min CDR so now I have a Happy Rhodes live at Ectofest CD :). Now all that´s missing is an original photo of her at the event to gop on the cover - any chance of someone putting up one on their website? I also downloaded the other mp3s so I can check out what Mila Drumke, Rachael Sage and Susan McKewon sound like this weekend. I have a friend who has at least 500 mp3s (he's downloaded many through a friend's cable modem, so the wait wasn't quite so long.) He sets up a play list on winamp of hundreds of songs, then leaves his computer on and plays mp3s all day at home. Great for a day home of goofing off or cleaning... Kristen While I understand the better quality available through MP3s - plus the fact that, if one really enjoys the music, one can save them on hard drive, transfer them to CD-ROM/convert them to WAV, etc., what is concerning me is: why is there a trend of artist websites offering ONLY MP3s? A short, even if low quality, RealAudio (for those of us without Macs) sample would give a teaser of whether I'd want to take the time to retrieve the longer MP3. Even the old fashioned .wavs and .aus tended to be kept under 1/2 MB. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 12:40:54 -0500 From: Mark Lowry Subject: more venus Hey, If you go to the www.tori.com site, and link to where you can pre-order the album, there's a track listing. But I guess it's a tribute > to the fans that they never seem to compete with the music, the way > your average public usually does! I used a pair of mics from Core Sounds... they sell them as the "Low Cost Binaural Mics." They take cheap panisonic omidirectional condensor mics, matched em, put them in rubber tubing, mount 'em on alligator clips, and sell them at a big mark up. They are kind of noisy, but I like them because they were pretty inexpensive and I can just clip them on a hat or glasses and forget about them. The "binaural" part means that if you wear them close to your ears and listen with headphones, you get a strong sense of "3D" sound. The drawback to that, as you mentioned, is that those people chattering behind you at the show sound very clearly and realistically behind you when you listen to the recording. I record with a sharp minidisc recorder. Sounds much better than tape, costs much less than DAT, runs for 6 hours on the built in battery and a pair of AA's. I'm not too serious about this stuff, so its great for me. When I'm done, I plug the minidisc through a Numark EQ a friend got at a garage sale, make any obvious adjustments (usually just rolling off the excess bass that always finds itself in my recordings) and put the show in an MP3 file for posterity. You too, huh? ;) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Sep 1999 03:00:30 +0200 (MDT) From: Christian Reiter Subject: Ectofest CD Hi Richard, not all CD recording programs, even newer ones, are aware of the existence of 80min CD blanks. They assume you can only have a 74min blank and want to keep you from doing something that, as the program knows better, couldn´t work. 74min is the specification for the standard (650meg iso) CDRs, 80 will only fit on 700mb iso CDRs *if* your program allows it. I have a not-so-new version of WinOnCD that came bundled with my drive, and this will write 80min. Adaptec EasyCD 3.5 won´t. There are some shareware/freeware recording programs that will even let you 'overburn' a few minutes on both types of blanks (right after the mp3>wav decoding, the length of the concert was 81min something, but instead of getting new software I cut out a tiny bit). These programs will just try to fit a bit more on the blanks, this often works, but of course there is no guarantee given. So if its essential to burn 80(sometimes it is:) you might want to look for another burning software, or update to a newer version. Ah but that is what makes the recording so 'live'. With headphones on it really feels like you are in the audience. You can hear insects chirping, the tick police, etc. But does wearing these mics mean you have to attend the concerts with the selfcontrol of a trappist monk? As for the noise, yes there is soome uniform hissing on it, but I couldn´t resist playing around with the WAV file in CoolEdit a bit, and it turns out that a fourier noise reduction brings out a lot of additional peripheral detail. (oh yes I really *was* looking for a stability test for a spare-part pc -this was it :) Christian ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 21:45:20 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: Happy, happy! You ran a noise reduction in Cool Edit? What'd that take, 5-6 hours? I didn't bother with that, but I did use a filter to clip the applause down so the whole thing fell under the +/- 20000 line, then normalized to punch up the volume a little. It's still a quiet CD by comparison to others. May play with it some more, that is until I need that 850 Meg WAV space back on the HD. Cool Edit is a wonderful thing, no? Regarding CD burning S/W, Drew Harrington on this list pointed me to CDRWIN a while ago and I pretty much use it for all my music CDs. Support 80's and overburning. Once you conquer its cue list feature, you can do some cool stuff. For instance, I didn't have to break the HR show into separate WAVs for each track, I could cue it from the single big file. Plus I have it cued so that all the banter is "between tracks". So if you play it in continue mode, it's the whole show, but if you shuffle it, its just the music. And just to see if it works, I tried the CD-Text feature, and it does! My player flashes the song names as it plays. Tee-hee! Yet another wonderful thing... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 1999 22:35:12 EDT From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: Jessica Weiser CD release party Hi everyone, Here's the CD release party info. I hopped the T over to the Paradise to catch Dido and Kendall Payne. Kendall was ok...good stage presence for a 20 year old (is she twenty yet?), didn't impress me with anything new in the way of vocals or music (i swear, at least half of her chord progressions and strummings sounded exactly like popular songs by other people). Nice voice but a little limited. Dido was tasty. I still have yet to get the album and have only heard the song off of last year's lilith sampler. I went in expecting to perhaps be pleasingly bored by nice ear candy after all the comparisons to Sarah M and after sampling the album at Tower a month or so back. Boy was I wrong. I hadn't heard any Sarah on my listening to the album at Tower, but something more akin to Eleanor McEvoy's latest album. They set up the mood for her set by replacing the between set music with a cd of club music, and then the band came on stage and threw out a short little throbbing instrumental ditty with scratching and guitar atmospherics and jungle drums. Then Dido came out, looking like Irene Jacob crossed with Joey Lauren Adams and sounding and emoting like Eleanor McEvoy crossed with Nina Persson. In fact, much of the music was like a mush of Eleanor McEvoy's _Snapshots_, the Cardigans _First Band to the Moon_, and Autour de Lucie. And the music was just so damn catchy. She had an excellent band that was hooked up on technology...a Scratcher; a drummer with a kit and also a hand drum, both of which were connected to loop machines, as well as a drum machine; a guitarist with effects up the wazoo; a keyboardist; a bassist; and a backup singer. This was the last night of their American tour and they played well. Their set was too short (less than an hour, even with the encore) but quite satisfying. Dido seemed to be having fun on stage and exuded a playful charm that was captivating. They did a two song encore that ended with a freaky cover of the Police's "Every Little Thing (he) Does Is Magic"; it was like a jungle/techno dance remix version of the song with Dido's only point of reference for the tune of the song being her own voice. The guitarist was off in loop-land, the bassist was sliding all over the place, and the keyboardist was swirling around with an occasional hint at the harmony. Very cool. ****** Next tuesday, jeff wasilko and I will be heading into Somerville to catch Garmarna at Johnny D's. I believe the same night, Rebecca Gates and Cake Like are at the Middle East. I was surprised to read a nice article in the Boston Phoenix last week talking about Scandinavian folk music after that spurt on ecto of Scandinavian recommendations. The article focused on Hedningarna and Varttina. I'm not sure if i'll go, but on Wednesday, a group called Botanica is playing teh Middle East. It has Abby Travis on bass and vocals; and her own group, the Abby Travis Foundation, is one of the openers. then, next friday, the Rachels play at the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square. Also, at the Brattle Theater, they will be doing a special retrospective on Studio Ghibli every Sunday starting the 19th with a special screening of Princess Mononoke! :) Neil Gaiman, who did the English adaptation of the movie for Mirimax will be at the Brattle Theater the following thursday to show the BBC version of Neverwhere on the big screen at 3 pm and then to do a reading for the Comic book Legal Defense Fund at 8 pm.
