We listened to the remix CD on the way home from Ectofest, and it's dynamite. Unfortunately, the copy I got didn't have it, thought it did come with a free video, with videos from "B-Side", "Cotton Wool", "Gorecki", and ... uh ... One other. Wild stuff. However, the video was obviously designed for in-store play, so much of the image is obscured by the image of the cover, and song title, album, record company, and release date info continually on screen. Brendan Perry's warm, beautiful vocals will be familiar to many from his work as a founding member of Dead Can Dance (who have sold literally millions of albums around the world during their 15 year career). 'Eye Of The Hunter' is Brendan's first solo outing - all songs on the album were written by Brendan Perry with the exception of the Tim Buckley penned 'I Must Have Been Blind'. The album was produced and recorded by Brendan Perry at Quivvy. 'Eye Of The Hunter' was performed by Brendan Perry (vocals, guitars, mandolin and keyboards), Liam Bradley (drums), Martin Quinn (pedal steel guitar) and Michael Brunnock (backing vocals on 'Saturday's Child'). Brendan will be playing live shows in Europe in October, including a London show (details to follow), his first since the legendary ICA perfomance in 1993. 'Eye Of The Hunter' will be available on cd (CAD 9015CD) and vinyl (CAD 9015). The tracklisting for the album is as follows: 1. Saturday's Child 2. Vogage Of Bran 3. Medusa 4. Sloth 5. Well, Happy was the #1 reason I went - I didn't know about any of the other artists until I got there. And while they were all pretty good, the one that impressed me the most was Drama Chic... And I should say first of all, that this is definitely not the kind of music I normally listen to... I don't listen to a lot of folk music in general, and almost all of the folk music I do listen to has female vocals. But live, these guys were amazing; they had very difficult harmonies to sing, and they were right on with every note. The lyrics were really funny, and sometimes quite deep. I was really engaged by these folks, who had a great energy and stage presence. But one of the things which really grabbed my attention was a young woman in the audience who was perfectly lip-synching to EVERY song they performed. Even the song they introduced as "brand new song", she knew every word and every note of the entire song. She was so into this music, and watching her sync-along made me appreciate it even more. She was like an understudy or something, I thought. For such an obscure musical group, I really wondered, who was this girl? Turned out she was the sister of the guitar player. But even so, the idea that a family member (or even a girlfriend/boyfriend) would be so supportive of someone's music without being an actual part of the band, when they're so unknown, artistic, and creative, blows my mind. I mean, typically when you're doing your own thing, music-wise, the family members roll their eyes and hope you'll grow out of it... The people who eventually become avid fans who know all the songs and lyrics are the ones who find out about the music FIRST and get to know the musician as a person SECOND. It was really touching to see such a connection between brother and sister (my sister and I have very little musical taste in common, for example). I was chatting with the folks from Drama Chic and they reconfirmed what I already suspected: that she's a musical genius. Some people can memorize music very easily... I used to be like that myself, and I recognized it easily in her. She plays the flute on a couple of their songs.... But we won't ever hear it unless they release a recording, which they haven't done yet... Something to look forward to, I guess. np: Soma/Inner Cinema - -- Alan Ezust Cambridge, MA USA http://www.brainwashed.com/ezust ezust@brainwashed.com - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cure the soul by means of the senses, and cure the senses by means of the soul. - Oscar Wilde ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Sep 1999 22:09:14 -0400 From: Richard Subject: Mila & ectofest I am astonished at the repeated negative comments regarding Mila Drumke's performance at ectofest; It was the first time I've seen her band (3/4 of it anyway) and it took my wife and I about one song to get completely sucked into their performance and Mila's soaring vocals in particular.... what is the problem here? maybe people were put off by her hot peach (we couldn't come up with a better color descriptor) skirt? or impatient for the main event after six other acts? We thought they played together magnificently, Mila, Lyris and Elissa combining their talents to create something way bigger. And no, she didn't copy KaTe's intonations doing Under The Ivy, but that hardly invalidates it: isn't the point of a cover to express one's own take on the original? I think Mila has taken one of KaTe's most ravishing songs and given it a new and very personal feel. Anyway, thanks to all the musicians who lent their talent to this worthy event and I have to chime in with my particular appreciation for what Meredith and Chuck hath wrought: ectofest was ***superbly*** organized and managed... you sure you haven't done this before? ;-) I only wish that even more people had shown up and while ten dollars was an unbelievable bargain, I gotta think that folks wouldn't mind forking over twice that to help the Woman's Center and the AIDS Ministry. I won't repeat everything else that has already been said, but I don't think we can thank Chuck and Meth enough, so I'll do it again... thanks guys! It was awesome! I recorded some of the sets (I know I wasn't the only one!), and I was pretty surprised by how well they came out. Since I store concerts I record as MP3's anyways (I physically don't have the room for tons of CD-Rs), I was thinking of making the recordings available via FTP to fellow ectophiles. I'm just offering 4 ectofest sets for the time being, but with the demise of the taping project, this might not be a bad way to share shows others missed or just want to experience again. There are two problems with this: a) You'll need a FAST connection. An hour of music encoded at 192kps (which is the rate at which my untrained ear has trouble distinguishing a minidisc from and MP3) comes out to about 85MB. b) It might go against the wishes of the artists. Personally, I don't see how this would be any different from tape trading, provided the site isn't public, and that has traditionally been at least somewhat accepted. Anyways, if you're interested and have a fast connection, e-mail me for logon information. Yup, exactly. And I didn't personally find the take on UtI on Saturday to be worth expressing. Perhaps it's better in other venues; perhaps it's better on CD; perhaps it's better when I haven't been sitting in the sun listening to, in my opinion, far better performers like Sloane and Susan. I've seen two singles for Bliss. One comes in a carboard pull-out tray (a la the Jackie's Strength and Cruel/Raspberry Swirl singles) and has Bliss plus a live version of Hey Jupiter. The other comes in a regular cd case and has those 2 songs plus a live version of Upside Down. I bought the single the first day it came out and saw both versions. I went out today to get the 1000 Oceans single, and only saw a 2-song (1000 Oceans and a live version of Baker Baker) cardboard pull-out tray single. I checked several different stores. Is this the only single, or is there going to be a 3 song single, like Bliss had? Tori looks really pretty on the cover, but BB isn't one of my favorites, so I'm not sure this is a must have.
