I actually have a second geocities website that I set up to use as an mp3 base. I don't have anything on it except a basic intro page, and it takes no hits except the ones I give it right now. Geocities provides me with 11M of space, and they have ftp access. I would be willing to donate this site to ecto, establish a commonly known password and username. Anyone with the password could upload to the site, the files would only be displayed in an ftp connection, though. But as ftp is faster for this kind of thing, it might be viable. The only drawbacks are that a) my own connection is rather slow (33.6) so I can't upload or download too much myself, and b) only one person can access it at a time. However, I do volunteer the site if people want to use it, or until a better arrangement comes along. - --Kay ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. Despite my initial reservations I'm happy to report that Lino's self-titled CD isn't bad at all. The first track, the poppy "Troubleshooting" is probably its weakest - trust Virgin Records to pick it as the single... Actually it's not even that it's bad, perhaps its greatest problem is simply that it isn't representative of what lies ahead. Anyhow, once that's over things get more interesting as we head into the land of ectronica - well, OK, ectronica with a large dose of pop sensibilities. Track two starts in a very Portisheadish way, with the subdued, somehow distant atmospheric samples serving as a background for Lisa Ffrench's clear voice. The voice which by the way reminds me very much of Angie Hart at times! Track 4, "Complaintive" would be *my* choice for a single, with a tune one can sing along, yet arrangements much more interesting than "Troubleshooting". The next track, "Wasted" probably captures the essence of this album. It's a sweet tune (waltz?) but it's punctured by the suprisingly menacing chorus, and that's what it's all about - while it all seems sweet on the surface, there is some grit and variety underneath. Enough to keep things interesting. All in all, I'd give them 7/10. Not quite a contender for "The Best of 99", but worth buying all the same. - ------------------------------------------------------ 62,400 repetitions make one truth. - Aldous Huxley - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/hall.html ------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1999 14:36:18 -0400 From: Mark Miazga Subject: Womanrock.com Brenda Kahn's womanrock.com web site keeps getting bigger and better. Nonetheless, I'm glad you found it worthwhile to write about perceived intolerance. I'm not going to apologize for, defend, or refute thinking that these albums sound weird. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I think we all make suppositions and guesses and assumptions on things and then wait to see if they come true or not. I freely admit, and have freely admitted, that I could be totally wrong and these albums could be wonderful. I think Meredith (correct me if I'm wrong please) said something similar, that the Paula Cole album sounded like it could be a ridiculous mish-mosh of songs or it could be a work of utter brilliance. As for the Indigo Girls, someone said they thought the new album sounded like a logical extension of the Suffragette tour, which makes sense. I guess I think of it kind of more as an Indigo Girls and Friends album than an indigo girls album, but that would depend on how and how much the guest artists are used. "Well what do you people want, for an artist to sing the same shit day after day, year after year? Haven't even heard the albums yet and they have gone utterly insane." Actually, if you read my other message, you'd see that this is absolutely not what I think, and I believe that artists should take risks and do what they need to grow, whether that brings them commercial success or alienation, whether I think the album is good or bad. Etc. "as for the intolerant nature of you message, montana awaits if you want." I find it really amusing that I've developed such a reputation for intolerance on this list, as nothing could be further from the truth. Actually, one of the great benefits of growing up in an extremely prejudiced family was that I hated and spoke out against prejudice in all forms from an early age. So right now I'm trying to picture myself up on a hill in Montana, sitting on the front porch of some log cabin with a rifle on my lap. But then, it's kind of hard to have a militia of one, so I guess I'd bring up my friends with me. My gay friends, straight friends, bisexual friends, white friends, black friends, Asian friends, Latino/a friends, Caribbean friends, African friends, young friends, old friends... maybe even my Israeli and Korean pen pals can come along!
