I asked my wife if she wanted to go to CT to see Happy Rhodes play, to which she replied 'cool!', so we will be there on Saturday, with my daughter Arianna who is a big fan of Warpaint. I look forward to meeting you all. Best, Marc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Sep 1999 12:58:01 -0500 From: Suzanne Cerquone Subject: Joy Askew/NYC Thanks to Christopher who posted about the free Joy Askew show last night at the Living Room in NYC. It was my first time seeing/hearing Joy and I enjoyed her very much. Her version of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" was devastatingly beautiful. I'd be interested in seeing her play with the piano (versus the acoustic guitar last night), which the guy sitting next to me said is even more impressive. It was interesting timing as I'm reading Peter Gabriel's authorized biography, and during the chapter on the "Secret World" tour where Askew played keyboard, it was noted that Gabriel really loved her female energy added to the band, but the other band members (Tony Levin, David Rhodes and Manu Khatche) didn't get along with her at all. I find that hard to believe, especially since it seems Tony Levin loves to work with just about anybody and everybody and doesn't seem to have one enemy! I think the biographer screwed up, as he also said Askew was replaced by Paula Cole on the American leg of the tour. I clearly remember both Askew and Cole at the NYC show in '93. Or at least I remember a female keyboardist in addition to Paula on vocals. Oh, and one more thing. I'm really looking forward to EctoFest this weekend. It has really turned into an ideal line-up! I'm glad you enjoyed Joy's show. I really enjoyed seeing her at Joe's Pub over the summer (July? August?) and was at least equally impressed as when I saw her live solo at Lilith Fair in '97. I hope you picked up _When_ at the show. If not, you should definitely order it. I love everything on _Gorgeous Creature_ and adore _When_. I'm not that crazy about Tender City, but it does have some beautiful songs on it, and it's wonderful to see a musician get stronger and stronger as time goes by. JoAnn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Sep 1999 17:17:12 -0500 (CDT) From: "Mitchell A. Pravatiner" Subject: Music in the Afternoon Thursdays during September, the Chicago Cultural Center will be presenting a series of performances, "Female Songwriters You Wanna Hear," featuring local, mostly acoustic, women performers. Performers the rest of the month are: September 9: Barb Silverman and Deb Lader September 16: Sue McClelland and Julie Frost September 23: Kat Eggleston and Donna Adler September 30: Kelly Kessler and Ellen Rosner All performances run from 1 to 2 PM in the Randolph Cafe. The Cultural Center is at Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street. During today's performance, the performer said something thought-provoking: that a store purchase of a $16 CD only nets the artist about $2, aftrer the label, distributor and store get their pieces of the action; while purchasing them directly form artists, at performances or on websites, naturally gives the artist much more. It seems to me to be one of life's little conundra--to put more money directly in the artist's pocket, or to show stores that there is interest out there in independent artists, thereby giving them incentive to stock those artists and others, and potentially to expose them to an even wider market. As I recall, this was a topic of conversation in the early days of this list, concerning the best place to buy Happy's recordings. Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 18:54:49 -0400 From: Bill Adler Subject: Re: Personal sampler CD exchange and copyright I'm going to throw in my two cents worth here on the question of a CD=20 exchange. As a literary agent I deal with copyright questions on a regular= =20 basis. In the world of words, copyright issues are reasonably clear: Once= =20 you write it, that work is copyrighted and nobody else can copy it and give= =20 the work away, even if they're not charging money. I thought the same would be true for music, but --and this is an area I=20 know very little about about-- from my initial reading of the law, things=20 are different when it comes to music. Here's the relevant section from the= =20 copyright act: "Sec. 1008. Prohibition on certain infringement actions No action may be brought under this title alleging infringement of=20 copyright based on the manufacture, importation, or distribution of a=20 digital audio recording device, a digital audio recording medium, an analog= =20 recording device, or an analog recording medium, or based on the=20 noncommercial use by a consumer of such a device or medium for making=20 digital musical recordings or analog musical recordings." Section 1008 would seem to say that it's okay to make digital copies of=20 music, and even give them away. However, it's also the case that music=20 companies have been halting the operation of web sites that give away MP3=20 recordings of copyrighted material. My guess is that 1) this is a grey=20 area, and 2) there's a reasonable chance that some music company would=20 object to a site where people exchanged copyrighted materials. I'd tread=20 carefully in this arena, because it's no fun to be served legal=20 papers. Being a test case can get expensive. At the very least, I'd have= =20 somebody who's expert in music law give the okay before making this a part= =20 of a public web site. Now back to listening to music... - --Bill n.p. Section 1008 is about digital recording *devices* and *media*, not the recordings themselves. It safeguards the Rio and the MP3 format itself, for example, but it has no bearing on MP3 *files*. The rules about song copyrights are right in with everything else in chapter 1. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 1999 21:48:53 -0400 From: meredith Subject: thank you ecto and tori Hi! Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes. Normally I'd respond individually off-list, but I hope you all can understand my lack of time to do that right now. :} It was a great birthday -- I blew off work; the best present ever arrived via FedEx in the morning (a plane ticket to Vancouver to go to Veda Hille's CD release gig in Vancouver next weekend - yack!!!); and I topped off the day seeing Tori Amos and Alanis Morisette at Jones Beach. It was a really great show. Tori and the boys were amazing as usual. I was rather disappointed with the set list, though -- I've heard "Crucify" about 8554 too many times (though she did do a wonderful deconstruction of it), and for her solo bit in the middle she did "Leather" and "Jackie's Strength", two songs I'd happily never hear again. But "Blood Roses" and "Graveyard" into "Tear In Your Hand" more than made up for that. Yow. The new songs didn't really stick with me, but I'm sure I'll appreciate the performance more once I have the album and have gotten to know it. Then, it was time for the big surprise of the night: Alanis didn't suck. I am *not* an Alanis fan by ANY stretch, but I have to say she really, really impressed me last night. She's got a top-notch band, and she puts on a really good, intense show. (She didn't caterwaul too much, either, which was a bonus. ;) I'd see her again for a cheap ticket. Another bonus was the fact that the fans sitting around us didn't make me homicidal, which hasn't happened at a Tori show in a while. I'm glad I wasn't sitting in the orchestra, though -- everyone stood up the minute Tori took the stage, and there were a lot of tall people down there. I didn't see any of the Tori-fan-vs.-Alanis-fan shenanigans I'd been hearing about, which was also good. Now it's time for sleep. I can't start off this weekend already zombified - -- that'll be Very Bad.
