"Best of" release. It also appears that none of her other material is (or ever was ?), available on CD :( I guess it's time to clean off those old LP's and try again to transfer them to CD. My most recent attempt was a compilation of old 60/70's hits for my daughter's "Retro 60's Birthday Party". She picked out the tunes from my collection of old 45's including The Monkees, The Hollies, Beach Boys, Donny and Marie (must have been my wife's :), and Melanie. It appears that Rough Trade reissued them this year! Unfortunately, they're imports in the US but on the bright side at least they are available. For those not familiar with Shelleyan Orphan - there aren't any samples on CDNow to help you out but Caroline Crawley lent her talent to a couple of This Mortal Coil tracks on Blood (which is what wound up leading me to chase down Shelleyan Orphan discs) - and that one CDNow does have samples of. Check out her gorgeous vocals on "Mr. Somewhere". But as for Shelleyan Orphan (which was Caroline and Jemaur Tayle), they get mentioned around these parts a couple of times a year and you could probably dig through the archives for some reviews, but I'll just say that if you enjoyed The Sundays' "Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic" I can't imagine you wouldn't at least take a liking to most of "Humroot". Many singer/songwriters including Joy Eden Harrison and Cindy Lee Berryhill have joined the procession and made new fans coast to coast in the last few years. Happily, our northern talents are catching the buzz as well. Emm Gryner, a well-known performer in her home base of Toronto, decided to add her name to the list of LRT pioneers. ====== Emm Gryner stepped into the Living Room Tour stream and got her feet wet this week; in the middle of her adventurous cross-country drive in support of the Lilith tour, she stopped in the Cincinnati area for a show at Andrea's house. I arrived about 45 minutes before the start time, and was pleased to see that Emm came downstairs and mingled with us before the show, introducing herself to everyone in a quite cordial and engaging manner. I counted about 15-18 visitors at showtime; those who turned up early were treated to a wonderful smorgasbord laid out by Andrea's mother. Most were too timid to snack during the performance, but Emm cornered the licorice sticks and enjoyed a bite between songs. The performance was a short but riveting 45 minutes, featuring such choice items as "Julia", "Revenge", "Wisdom Bus", "Acid", and a stunning cover of Ozzy's "Crazy Train". Believe it. Emm alternated between piano and acoustic guitar, her voice soaring over a solid accompaniment and the space between songs filled by friendly and spontaneous banter. The nice thing about a living room show is that the artist can relax and interact with the audience, pacing the show instead of rushing through the performance trying to gauge the listeners' reception. All too soon it was over, and there was a general rush for T-shirts, CDs, and pictures. Well, I rushed up to have my picture taken with Emm, anyway. :-) She and her manager, Mike (whom I saved from being the oldest person at the show, to his relief!) hung out and made new friends for a bit before packing and hitting the road for tomorrow's show in Detroit. I had a chance to share thoughts with Mike about the Living Room Tour phenomenon. He was thrilled to see more artists hitting the road to present their music to small appreciative audiences, saying that it presented a great opportunity to spread the music as well as offering a respectable earnings ratio with virtually zero overhead. He was also amused to hear that one Steve Ito has produced more effective promotion than many major advertising agencies with his constant haranguing of us music lovers to listen to Emm and other Northern artists. :-) Those interested in sampling Emm's music should visit http://webhome.idirect.com/~nsounds/emm/emmmus.htm to hear some downloadable samples. I have no connection with her other than as a satisfied listener. :-) Don't miss Emm if she comes to a living room or concert hall near you! - -- | Greg Dunn | Using emacs as a text editor is | | gregdunn@indy.net | like using a car to listen to | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | the radio. | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | - Mike Campbell | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Aug 1999 01:11:36 -0400 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Lisa Cerbone sample At 10:14 PM -0500 8/27/99, Bob Kollmeyer wrote: >neal copperman writes: >> At 6:32 PM -0400 8/26/99, JoAnn Whetsell wrote: >> >> >Secondly, saw your np >> >np: Mississipi Nights - Dar Williams with Katryna & Nerissa Nields >> > >> >Is this a song? I actually did know that was the venue name. I just thought it'd make a good title too. I also like The Duck Room as the title of the Carrie Newcomer show you copied for me. I wonder if most clubs that I am unfamiliar with seem like good album titles? Certainly the local clubs don't seem to have that ring to it. I guess if I was paying more attention at the time, I'd know the date of the show too :) Both of those shows sound fantastic! I have definitely enjoyed listening to them. Thanks again. I have a few things for you, but I have just been slow at making them. I have been taping like mad in preperation for ectofest. Full shows are easy, it's those sampler tapes that are killing me. But eventually... So, tell me about your equipment. I'd definitely consider getting some new stuff, especially after hearing how good those sounded. Though my last few tapes have sounded as good as any I've made. Not as good as those, but really quite listenable. Maybe after I move back to New Mexico I'll even break down and get a CD burner. Though the urge to then burn all my cassettes would be overwhelming! Hope life is treating you well. neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #289 **************************
