I'd have praised you highly. Emmylou has ALWAYS been great. And she sounds in these songs abso- lutely no different then she always has. She has had so many great albums, and I'm proud to say that I've listened to her since probably Day 1, and still have the vinyl to prove it! I even have _Gliding Bird_ both on cassette and LP! :) Has there ever been a sexier picture than Emmy on the covers of _Luxury Liner_, _Elite Hotel_, or _Cimarron_? Not that I've ever seen. Mmmmm.. I dare say that even KATE hasn't looked as great. What a gift not only to be incredibly talented, beautiful, but a wonderful person as well. One of my favorite memories was when she signed my _Luxury Liner_ LP. I would kill to be able to marry Emmylou Harris. :) I've always preferred female artists my whole life, and my ectoish tastes sprang from my love as a boy for the songs of Linda, Emmylou, Nico- lette, Wendy Waldman, the great, horribly under- appreciated Karla Bonoff (whose songs made Linda a household name, by the way), and others along that line. The late 60's, early 70's "Southern California" contingent, if you will. I couldn't recommend a specific album of hers for an Emmylounewbie, but if I had a squirt gun to my head, I'd say go buy _The Ballad of Sally Rose_, immediately. A concept album to rival any concept album ever made, just an incredible effort! > I've always liked Linda Ronstadt's voice, even if her choice of > material has been suspect at times. I think this is going to be very tasty > indeed. Suspect?! HA! Linda is a certified PIONEER who has mined more musical veins and brought them to mainstream popularity than *any* other singer alive today. Country, country-rock, rock and roll, torch, big band, mariachi, cubano, you name it, Linda has made it shine. The word "eclectic" in Webster's Unabridged should have Linda's picture by it! And no, the fact that Linda is the pride and joy of my hometown, Tucson, Arizona, has nothing to do with it. :) http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/entertainment/special_features/8_23_99duo.html I just saw the CD last night at Cellophane Records here in sunny Bellingham, but didn't get it only because I already had the new Innocence Mission, a 3-gold CD bootleg set of George Harrison outtakes from _All Things Must Pass_ (what a GREAT treat), three HDCD Joni Mitchell rereleases, _Los Super Seven_, Alison Krauss' new one, _Forget About It_, and no more cash! I don't think I've played a new cd quite this frequently over such a long period of time in years. For some reason (inventiveness? her great voice and sense of song structure? the interesting noises all over this disc?) I keep listening and listening to this. This isn't pretty pop, though Kym Brown has a clear pretty voice--she writes dark-ish, tough-ish songs (with pretty moments and plenty of auditory hooks so it's not difficult listening that way), most of the vocals are doubletracked with a distorted tracks, and there are all kinds of fascinating samples and noises, including theremin. Hard to think of comparisons--I guess the closest I can get is to Holly McNarland and the overall combination of great vocals with fascinating noises Imogen Heap. The toughness/beauty combination that flourishes in almost every way on this disc is hard to beat. I highly, highly recommend this to anyone interested in intriguing combinations of vocals and sounds. lamb, _Fear of Fours_ I'm going to be the exception here, and have to say that while I really like _Fear Of Fours_ it hasn't stood up to as many totally obsessive repeated plays as _Lamb_ does. It's hard to pin down why, but I actually got tired of many songs on _Fear Of Fours_ when I went through my stage of playing it at least once a day and started skipping them, while I can still play all of _Lamb_ obsessively (and still do, even after three years!). I also find Lou Rhodes' vocals higher and more pinched than on the first disc and while I still love her voice, I prefer the first style. HOWEVER, this should not in any way be taken as a lack of endorsement for this album--I adore it, and this has confirmed for me that lamb is one of my favourite groups. I expect I'll be listening to this album for years to come. Just not as frequently as I listen to _Lamb_. Baxter, _Baxter_ somewhere along the way I also got stuck on a Baxter promo sampler that I picked up--so I had to buy the full album, simply because I _needed_ more songs of theirs. It's ectronica. You might have heard their "Television" song about "you blew up your television / the whole world to you". Musically they don't sound so different from other groups, but it's the singer's dispassionate yet gripping singing that gets me and makes to listen to this. It's not lamb, but I like it a lot. Kristin Hersh, "Echo" [single] I love her version of "Pennyroyal Tea" particularly. Wow. Kristin Hersh, _Sky Motel_ She's Kristin. I think this might be my favourite of her "solo" discs after _Hips and Makers_. Tamara Williamson, _Nightmare on Queen Street_ She's the lead singer for a Toronto group called Mrs. Torrance, which put out one album which I've heard but don't have, and an ep called Porn and a follow-up album called i'm the bird. She has a wonderfully distinctive voice, but I'm not sure I can describe it. Nightmare is an odd album, and it seems a little out of control or messy but I think that's part of its power. Sometimes when you're not in control good things happen. Amy Denio, _Greatest Hits_ Hey, if you don't have Amy Denio's individual albums, you must get this one. A good sampler of her unique career. Sarah Harmer & Jason Euringer, _Songs for Clem_ This is Sarah Harmer of Weeping Tile, doing a bunch of country-sounding songs like "Blue Moon of Kentucky", "Tenesses Waltz" "Stormy Weater," "Your CHeatin' Heart" "Summertime", "Sentimental Journey". Its says "recorded on the back porch" and it definitely has a home-grown feel to it. Fun, and I love Sarah Harmer's voice, even when she goes country. Laurel MacDonald, _chroma_ Mostly sound-songs, a little like Sara Ayers. I like this but it doesn't demand repeated listenings as Ayers does. Strawberry, _Brokeheart Audio_ It's wonderful. Sort of a cross between Perfume Tree and Portishead and Lois' indierock. At least that's as good as a description as I can come up with right now. We got stuck on having it after seeing a video on Much Music's _The Wedge_ show, and it took us a long time to track down how to get the cd (which is available online). An interesting, creative mix of stuff. pondus, _boy in the bubble ep_ Swedish indierock with a good vocalist. Shows a lot of promise. Nicolai Dunger, _Songs Wearing Clothes_ This is a strange mix of pop and jazz and I'm not sure why I like this so much, but I do. Niamh Parsons, _Blackbirds & Thrushes_ She has a lovely voice. The press compares her to Sandy Denny, and while she's not quite that amazing, her voice is rich and evocative and does rise above the crowd doing traditional music. Highly recommended if you like these songs--I adore them. These are rich rather than prettified versions. Somewhat like June Tabor vocally. Shirley Collins & Davy Graham, _folk roots, new routes_ Folk/Trad Another one for fans of stripped-down folk. I've had other discs of Shirley Collings that didn't stick around, but this combination is lovely and fresh early '60s traditional folk. A wonderful reissue! Musa Eroglu, _Kavimler Kapisi Anadolu_ World/Turkey This is a tape of traditional Turkish music we picked up in Turkey. Delightful listening. Zara, _Avuntu_ Rock/World/Turkey She has a deep dark voice, and while she's making Turkish pop music (sounds very Turkish though), it's a little edgy. I love this. Ceylan, _Güldestim_ and _Aglayi Aglayi_ Rock/World/Turkey Ceylan is what a friend calls a "Pop Tart" but she's fun, and the songs have a rich sound which makes them rise above the throng. _Aglayi Aglayi_ is the newer/stronger of the two. She also sounds distinctly Turkish, though there are strong Western pop influences here, too. Tarkan, _ölürüm sana_ Rock/World/Turkey We basically got this for one very silly pop song, about a young man who is trying to kiss his girlfriend and a guy with a cart keeps going between them. The chorus has a repeated kissing sound in it. He's Turkey's George Michael. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 1999 16:22:51 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Lisa Cerbone sample JoAnn Whetsell wrote: >Hmmm... >I've never heard Lisa Cerbone before, but thought I'd check out the link. >When i got to the page with Swallowing Stones (great song name) there were >no graphics, and the 2 puzzle pieces to click on only brought me to >realaudio download sites. That the server is not properly configured to deliver, so one receives the binary rather than kicking off a player or asking what to use. So if I really wanted to spend the time downloading a huge MPEG file just so I can get the feel of the music - I'd get binary (Despite being a "born geek" who has stacks of music in most every room, I just dont "get" this MPEG thing! If I want to get the feel for music, I want a quickly-accessible sample -- and understand the lower quality transmission; spending minutes downloading a MPEG file so that I can play 20 seconds of it and then delete it?? ... if I LIKE the music, I prefer a real CD that I can play *wherever* I want to -- and from which I can make dubs for custom listening situations if I want to. But yes, I put MPEG files on the websites I do if the artists want them ... :-) Then, to the Swallowing Stones page. ... a note in my browser status that java was starting ... then the embedded Real Player. The kind of site that I generally use my back button for immediately. Tho I do appreciate that the player is not set to autostart!! Technically: it is a page constructed by the Real Producer G2, basically 'out of the box'. It uses Java. And despite the fact that the Real Producer is supposed to automatically update links to proper addresses when uploading, the two blank graphics are still defined as located on the web-person's "G:" drive. Not particularly platform independent, or downwardly compatible with older browsers --- or with users of current versions who surf with certain features turned off. And not particularly "eptly" published to the web. I'm hoping that this is a really new part of the site. And that there's someone technically-aware who can make the music accessible. (must be a bad week - such a rant! Must need a music fix!!) Carolyn ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #288 **************************
