That personal touch made the album before I even heard it. I'm just quickly listening, not the proper subsumed within the music first deep listen, but it's gorgeous anyway. Lush and in full bloom - strings, layered voices, French accordion sounds, many of the songs are self-contained worlds. I'd prefer less, some simple acoustic tracks, the odd scratchy unpolished edge, but with a growing understanding of production and how to arrange strings and such it is understandable that Sarah wants to flesh out her songs. I'm on my third year of being a huge Linda Ronstadt fan. I became one when I bought her "Winter Light" tape for three bucks in the cheapo-bin, which is another great album FYI, Joseph. Other goodies from her discography include her 1996 lullaby album "Dedicated to the One I Love" on which she sounds a lot like enya and 1992's "Frenesi"--a collection of Afro-Cuban big-band jazz standards. I am really anxious to hear "Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions", too and I am even going to see Linda and Emmylou when they come to the Oakdale in CT on Sept. 25 for one of only seven shows they are doing to promote this album. Just had to toot my Linda Horn for a second there. Josh __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I almost posted something about that song a few days ago. When TSW first came out, I really dug the song, then I lost a lot of interest in it. Just the other day, though, it occurred to me how utterly spectacular it is. A lot of it is simply in KaTe's mind-boggling delivery, but also things like the timing of it...given things like today's washingtonpost.com link to an article on internet addiction, it's amazing to think that KaTe was contemplating this a full decade ago, before the 'net was a pop-culture phenomenon. > another fave, Leonard Cohen's "Sister's of Mercy" You got the Lynn Canfield Box Lunch set, didn't you? Wonderful! jeff n.p. _This Father's Day_, Peter Himmelman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 16:52:07 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: musical selections and bits In my continuing Billboard Magazine research, I've come across more flakes of news and interesting articles and now present my findings : The Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris album was a progression from their collaberations with Dolly Parton performing old country standards as Trio. For both releases as that group, they never did co-ordinate a tour, partly because of schedule conflicts, partly because, beyond the repertoire on the albums, they didn't have too much music in common. IIRC, Emmylou convinced Linda to work on a wider range of songs which resulted in this new album and the subsequent tour. Halifax native, Cape Breton-style fiddler Natalie MacMaster has a nice full page article in this week's Billboard. It's promoting her new album out on Warner in Canada and Rounder in the US (it was already released in Europe). She takes a turn at the mic for this album, which is a step in a new direction for her, and even does a duet with Alison Krauss :) Mark O'Connor and Sharon Shannon are two more of many guests and the label reps seem positive that Natalie will get more radio exposure with the album. Melanie Doane, another fiddler from up north who is more of a pop singer, has a blurb in the Heatseekers/Up and coming artists page. It mentions that her album "Adam's Rib" is coming out in the states (I thought it already came out, but I guess it was just a Canada release a year ago). ASCAP (a performance rights society that pays publishers and songwriters performance royalties) and Lilith Fair are working together for an annual contest for unsigned songwriters. A bunch of female artists are donating money for the prizes which are $25,000 for the grand prize winner and $10,000 for the runner up. I'm not exactly sure what they mean by unsigned (unsigned to a publishing company? unsigned to a performance rights society?), but it seems like a pretty decent thing. An unspecified panel will judge the entrees and determine the winners. And in the end, aren't we all winners? No, because we don't all get 25 grand. I was surprised to find out that Tori Amos' first single for her new album was released as digitally downloadable single earlier this month. While it's not the first commercial downloadable piece of music, it is the pioneer release for any major label after the initial implementation of the SDMI (Secure Digital Media Initiative or somesuch thing) back in July. A number of online retailers as well as Atlantic are selling the single for download as both a Liquid Audio and a Windows Media file. If you wanna see a pretty damn cool trailer, go to http://movie-list.com and find the trailer for Dinosaur. Growr. It's a big file (23 mb) but i think it's worth it. Anyone know what the Wild Colonials are up to these days? Or, more importantly, is there a solo album >coming?! Well, the official sources took years to accept the fact that John Williams really had left the band, so I'm not surprised they're taking their time with Karan's departure (thought hers was a bit more abrupt). I first heard about this on the IRTRAD mailing list back in May, and fortunately the search engine for the list works well, so I was able to track down the original post. A little more checking found me the article in Irish Echo they referred to, so for the full story check out: http://www.irishecho.com/files/search2.cfm?id=3251 Note that, as it says, Sheila was not originally brought on board as the permanent replacement for Karan, so we'll have to wait and see what ends up happening. Another issue of Irish Echo had a review of Sheila O'Leary performing with Solas, which you can read at: http://www.irishecho.com/files/search2.cfm?id=3341 I actually don't disagree with most of what the reviewer said. I don't think Sheila is in any way a bad singer, I just didn't like her nearly as much as Karen and I think that Solas needs a brilliant singer to balance the brilliance of the instrumentalists. I've seen somewhere that Karan is indeed working on another solo album, but I can't find that reference. >My np is Sarah Slean's Blue Parade, just arrived in the mail, complete >with yellow post-it note reading "Karen... you're so far! I read a bit about this album while looking for stuff about Solas at the Irish Echo web site: From Troy, Inverness, Cape Breton Island, Natalie MacMaster will release her fifth recording, "In My Hands" (Rounder), on Sept. 14. She is no stranger to Irish music, having recorded a number of Irish tunes on her albums and also appearing on such recordings as "Eileen Ivers" (Green Linnet) and the Chieftains' "Tears of Stone" (RCA Victor). Among the guest musicians on "In My Hands" are Clare sisters Sharon (button accordion) and Mary Shannon (mandolin), harper Laoise Kelly, bassist James Blennerhasset, Coolfin drummer Ray Fean, Alison Krauss (on the song "Get Me Through December"), Nashville fiddler Mark O'Connor, nuevo flamenco guitarist Jesse Cook, and Halifax guitarist Dave MacIsaac. MacMaster even makes her vocal debut on the album, speaking-singing the title track with a light hip-hop beat behind her that will put listeners in mind of another Cape Breton fiddler tacking toward the contemporary, Ashley MacIsaac. I find that last sentence a bit scary, but that won't stop me from buying the CD. Of course, it also won't stop me from ending up skipping a few tracks every time I play it, the way I finally ended up doing with _No Boundaries_, which is by far my least favorite of her albums. I'm listening to the tracks on the web site right now, and yow -- I have to have this!!! Emmylou is just *too* cool (and if you'd told me 5 years ago that I'd be running out eagerly grabbing new Emmylou Harris releases, I'd have branded you nuts). I've always liked Linda Ronstadt's voice, even if her choice of material has been suspect at times. I think this is going to be very tasty indeed. I got interested in Emmylou after she worked with Daniel Lanois, who is often (but not always) a pointer to worthwhile musicians. FWIW, it was full price at Tower, but $12.99 at Borders. BTW, I don't know the background of how Rosanne Cash came to write the song, but there's one striking detail in the lyric printed in the booklet (the Rosanne Cash album didn't have a lyric sheet): "I shove my prayers in the crack" -- it's traditional to tuck pieces of paper with prayers in the cracks between the stones of the Western (aka Wailing) Wall in Jerusalem... n.p. Tori's "Bliss" CD single, one of 7 (oy) other CDs I got in quest of "Western Wall". (The song itself is OK, and the live "Hey Jupiter" is just beautiful. And the intro to "Upside Down" is very ... uh ... Tori.) - -- |> "The only thing that is not art is inattention" --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1999 21:06:32 -0700 From: Michael Pearce Subject: re: last bits "JoAnn Whetsell" writes: >- -- Thanks again to everyone who posted about the blank cd discs. So, as long >as Kay doesn't need any special discs to burn stuff for me, I should be >okay. This is not normal behavior for any model Mac that can go online, even the old Quadra/Performas. Check it out with Norton Utilities to make sure the file structure is okay (3.5.1 for Quadras, 4.0.3 for PPC Macs), then do a GetInfo on your copy of Netscape and boost the Preferred Size to 20480, assuming you have at least 32 megs RAM. Then open Network Preferences (3.0) or Edit -> Prefrences (4.0 and later) and set the Cache size to Zero. Alternatively, if you have RAM to burn, create a 5-meg RAMdisk and tell Netscape to store its cache files there. Presto: no more directory abuse caused by writing all those cache files. If you are struggling by with a 16-meg model and can't boost the RAM allotment, then be sure to Clear Disk Cache Now from the Netscape preferences (same place) each time you are done going online, and run Norton frequently. You should not be experiencing those crashes. Michael, Mac doctor ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #286 **************************
