I meant, as Joe picked up on, "unaffected" (not "uneffected"). Honestly, I am unfamiliar with the live recording of "Mississippi" on the Lilith Fair CD. However, I must say that I don't just like the understated and "unaffected". Sometimes I really do like full blown melodrama and affectation. I hope that my comments didn't seem like criticism because I do like most of what Paula does quite a bit. I just really loved and preferred the quirky, self conscious charm that she displayed when I saw her with Peter. That charm really comes through on the "Secret World Live" video. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 18:44:42 +1000 From: "Heidi Maier" Subject: Re: a positive take on paula cole JoAnn asked: > What is Fiona doing lately anyway? And I completely agree that Tidal was an amazing record; it still sweeps me away each time I listen to it (and irritates me hugely when people attack Fiona -- perhaps it is because I am the same age as her, I don't know, but I always relate to a lot of what she has expressed in her interviews). I too miss Joan Osborne ... Relish was an awesome record; I was so disappointed when she cancelled her Australian tour at the time. Does anybody know what she has been up to? Living in Australia, I have never had the opportunity (drat!) to see Paula Cole live, but to say her music has blown me away would be something of an understatement. I was fortunate enough to latch onto Harbinger shortly after its release (though I had to get it on import at the time) and have been a great admirer of her work ever since. I really look forward to hearing Amen (which will hopefully be out here shortly after its US release!). For the record - after making _Karelia Visa_ with Hedningarna and singing on the promo tour, Sanna Kurki-Suonio left the band last spring as well, to pursue her solo career. She's now been replaced by yet another Finnish singer, Liisa Matveinen. Sanna, Tellu and Anita all played/sang in a band called Loituma before joining Hedningarna. Loituma's music is quite traditional, acoustic stuff with lots of singing and kantele (=Finnish zither/harp). Sanna Kurki-Suonio's solo album _Musta_ is quite different from the things she's done with Hedningarna (or Loituma). The focus is on her voice, which is used in many ways - lots of layering. I'm not a huge fan, but it's nice enough stuff, and she and her band are not bad live, either. Juha n.p. I really look forward to >hearing Amen (which will hopefully be out here shortly after its US >release!). For me, Paula Cole is one of those rare birds: someone I would much rather listen to on disc than see live. It goes back to the first time I ever saw her, back when _Harbinger_ was new: she did a CMJ show at Fez in New York City on the same bill as Ingrid Karklins and Anhai (!), and she completely, utterly turned me off. She emoted as though she was at Carnegie Hall, not in a subterranean room holding maybe 50 people ... and she just drove me NUTS. I could hardly stand to listen to the album after that. But when _This Fire_ came out I picked it up cheap, and I LOVED it (still do - one of the many good things about not listening to commercial radio is I can avoid oversaturation when songs become as huge as the ones from that album did). I decided to go see her play when she came through town, just to see if she's calmed down a bit, and I was disappointed to find that no, she's gotten even *worse*. I found that the show was much more enjoyable if I stood behind the really tall guy in front of me so I couldn't see the stage. As for the new album, I really can't tell if I'm going to like it or not. I'm sure I'll pick it up and make my own decision once I've had a listen. It could be a ridiculuous mishmosh, or it could be a work of utter brilliance. Who knows? And for the record, I don't give a damn how many tracks it has (Paul, remind me to slap you next time I see you, on behalf of pretty much everyone here ;). +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 05:39:27 -0700 From: phclark Subject: Re: odds and ends Eric Brown wrote: > > Heck, if somebody needs jewelboxes, I've got a couple hundred here that I'll > send out for the cost of shipping. > I have a couple thousand. I wouldn't mind having a few *clean* jewel boxes; one thing that keeps me from buying more used CDs (and saving some money) is how grungy and generally uncared for used discs (both the media as well as the container) are. If one of you people that have been offering jewel boxes has a few (say ten or so) clean, unscratched, unshattered ones that you don't mind giving away, I'll send you postage money (or do something in return such as mixing you a tape). - - Bill G. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 21:18:56 -0400 From: meredith Subject: ectofest update Hi!
