This evening Mikey and I were trying to uncover/discover the inspiration behind Tori Amos' "Choirgirl Motel" album - long story as to why which I won't go into. well, since no one else has replied i guess i will. from what i understand, and from what i intrepret from the lyrics, the album was mostly inspired from the miscarriage she had before recording it. originally she was writing happy songs, about falling in love and getting married (at least that is what she implied in interviews). and then the miscarriage happened. there are at least three songs with what seems to be explicit lyrics about this unfortunate turn of events. SPARK - "she's convinced she could hold back glacier's, but she couldn't keep baby alive." PLAYBOY MOMMY - "in my platform, i hit the floor, fell face down, didn't help my brain out, then the baby came, before i found, the magic how, to keep her happy." IIEEE - "i know we're dying, and there's no sign of a parachute...why does there gotta be a sacrifice..." other songs seem to make reference to it (at least this is how i interpret the songs) including LIQUID DIAMONDS ("there's a sea secret in me, it's plain to see it is rising, but i must be flowing liquid diamonds, calling for my soul"), NORTHERN LAD ("i thought we'd be ok, me and my molasses, but i feel something is wrong, but i feel this cake just isn't done.") and CRUEL ("why can't my balloon stay up in a perfectly windy day"). i may be misinterpreting the album, or i may be simplifying a lot, or completely off about it, but i have also read articles that make reference to this album being inspired by her miscarriage (though the writers may also be completely off) granted not ALL the songs make reference to it. but to me it makes the most sense. hope this helps. someone else mentioned this: > and I'll add my own little bit. I've managed to see some footage of Paula > Cole in concert here during her Berklee College days, and what struck me > the most was her jazz and r&b singing. paula actually entered BERKLEE and was trained as jazz singer there if i am not correct. early articles when HARBRINGER was released talked a lot about her previous vocal training, and especially about how PAULA pretty much wanted to forge her own path and not sing jazz. she never liked it all that much she said, and instead wanted to become a singer/songwriter. one of her early influences was, surprisingly enough, KATE BUSH. she said KATE really inspired her...though she outgrew that inspiration later on. i am surprised that she is going back that route, i would have thought she would have instead, gone a more "power rock" route, ala MELISSA ETHRIDGE or something horrid like that. i might be interested in hearing this direction, because in truth, i found THIS FIRE pretty bland. of course i wasn't all that thrileld with HARBRINGER either, but i felt she had potential. she has such a powerful voice. ah well. funny thing. looking at it. both PAULA and SARAH MCLACHLAN have stated KATE BUSH as being an early influence, though they both outgrew the influence. and where are they now. make tons of money, writing horrible mediocre songs. hmmmm... just a thought. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 03:53:03 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: Re: new Paula Cole/Indigo Girls > I do believe that a pop artist should put at LEAST 10 tracks on > an album; not only is it in her best interests as a singer/songwriter, but > i feel that it also makes a fan's purchase of the album more worth it. I guess I just don't understand this emphasis on quantity. As more and more artists take advantage of the capacity of CDs to put out much longer albums than used to be the rule (see _Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie_, which any reasonable person would have cut in half), it seems increasingly refreshing to me to get the occasional one that errs instead on the side of restraint. Do you really bill your listening time by the minute? I've got 78-minute albums I adore (see _Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie_, which I'm glad no reasonable people interfered with) and 27-minute albums I adore, too. I've got albums I love with four songs, and albums I love with thirty. Whenever this record ends, you've got other ones to put on, right? So let them be whatever length they want to be. The goal of art should be to move you, not to just distract you for a given number of minutes. And criticizing an album based on the *number* of tracks, without even knowing how long it is, seems almost too officious for words. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 01:14:09 -0700 (PDT) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: Swedish Ecto Hi.. Thanks. Tori said in a number of interviews given around the time Choirgirl was released (May 1998) that she had not intended to write another record for quite sometimes, but began to do so when the songs came to her following the (understandably traumatic) experience of a miscarriage. When she came off the road following the Dew Drop Inn tour, she discovered that she was pregnant. I agree with Paul that the listener tends to feel cheated when an album only has 9 tracks on it, except for Jane's "Maria" because she has that monstruous twenty-minute long "Oh My My" on there. But, then there are albums where you are like, "COME ON! Couldn't you have just cranked one more song out?" Albums that fall under this category are: Donna Summer "All Systems Go" 2nd Chapter of Acts "Singer Sower" Rickie Lee Jones "Pirates" The Manhattan Transfer "Brasil" But, then there are albums with less than ten tracks that are so brilliant you don't care, so I'd have to agree with Glenn that sometimes quantity doesn't matter. Albums for which this is the case are: Brenda Russell (self-titled) Heart "Dreamboat Annie" Joni Mitchell "Mingus" Maybe it's just the human love for "even-ness" that makes us want to have at least five songs on a side. But, there's no real "sides" to CD's, so this notion will increasingly be a thing of the past. Josh __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi! Let me recommend Stina Nordenstam. She's a Swede (singing in English) and has kinda childlike voice (i guess you either love or hate it), sort of half sung half whispered - for me it took for a while before i really got into it, but now i love it. You might have heard "Little Star" from "and she closed her eyes" album which got a bit airplay on the Finnish radio stations. Last year she made an album called "People are strange" including covers of the songs such as "Sailing", "Purple Rain" and "Bird on a wire" - total 11 songs which all are great, hardly recognizable if you compare them to originals. Other Swedish female artists which you might like are Rebecka Törnqvist (jazzy, sings in English), Irma Schultz (sings in Swedish - her latest album which is in English consists of Joni Mitchell stuff) and Lisa Ekdahl (in Swedish also, her style is quite her own;) - most of her music is just her and guitar, but lately she's done also covers of old jazz classics). I could send you some samples if you want. :) By the way, I'm desperately searching Happy Rhodes stuff... Anyone who could help me to find some? It took me around two years until i managed to find her music (it was worth waiting:))- i recently ordered "many worlds..." (and absolutely adore it!) from cdnow, but all the other albums seem to be unavailable (not to mention that i could buy them in cd stores here in Finland). Taina.
