Before I committed to buying tickets to the tin angel shows in philly, I wrote Happy to ask her if she had anything else up her sleeve (like a three to five night run in NY, etc.). She replied that the tin angel was going to be it for a while, however she was "looking at the possibility of something weird and bigger in San Francisco in the Fall" (quotes are Happy's). Whether or not that actually materializes this fall or even later in the year, the point here is that it's definitely at least being considered by herself and Samson. >Yes, it would be nice for Samson to organize a real tour (what other >corporate entity would?), but I don't feel like Happy's fan base has much control over that. After the tin angel show, Happy was explaining that the problem with getting the MWABT tour off the ground was finding a booking agent that could properly and successfully place her, as she mentioned that the agents that they approached "ran in the other direction". She then related that it was obviously too late to consider doing a tour for her last album because it's no longer "new", since tours are usually done solely to promote the new material. She said that she hoped to have a new album out of the can by this January, and that hopefully everything would come together to make a big tour a reality. >Happy has agreed to perform at Ectofest - a primarily (exclusively?) >fan organized show. Yep, that would work...I had personally envisioned the Great American Music Hall (also with legendary acoustics). I like Bimbo's too though. An outdoor gig at Villa Montalvo would also be supreme. As far as helping to make this happen, this has always been my concern in this area...there needs to be a severe grass-roots effort in promoting the Hapster in the Bay Area. When and if she arrives here, it's clear that the basis for her success and return will be decided upon ticket sales. Things like Listening parties and some home-spun product development by fans at record stores preceding the show(s) will be a must, since Samson doesn't have the staff in key markets to accomplish these kinds of things. Well, think of it this way...before the Great Drought of 95-98, we used to get a new Happy album (or two!) pretty much every year. Wheee! jeff - -- |Jeffrey C. September 28 brings Cole';s follow-up to her smash "This Fire" with "Amen on Warner Bros., along with Sting's first venture for the newly-aligned A&M/Interscope, "Brand New Day." Finally, October 5 sees the Virgin release of Bowie's "hours...," alongside Etheridge's "Breakdown" on Island.... The guest list attached to the Indigo Girls' newest, the cryptically titled "Come on Now Social," includes fellow female musicians Sheryl Crow, Joan Osborne, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Natacha Atlas and Luscious Jackson drummer Kate Schellenbach. Also joining Amy Ray and Emily Saliers on the album is Band organist Garth Hudson..."Come on Now Social's" tracks, with guest stars indicated parenthetically: "Go," "Soon Be to Nothing," "Gone Again" (Crow), "Trouble" (Osborne), "Sister," "Peace Tonight" (Osborne, Hudson and Atlas), "Ozilline," "We Are Together" (Ndegeocello and Schellenbach), "Cold Beer and Remote Control" (Crow), "Compromise" (Ndegeocello and Schellenbach), "Andy," "Fay Tucker" (a lengthy song about executed murderer Karla Fay Tucker), and two hidden tracks, "Sister (Reprise)" and "Philosophy of Loss...." In the three years since "This Fire" was released, Paula Cole has become one of the leading ladies of popular music. Formerly a back-up singer for Peter Gabriel, Cole again takes the production and writing reins on "Amen." Accompanied by Kevin Barry and Greg Leisz on guitars, drummer Jay Bellerose and Tony Levin...on bass, Cole serves up nine new tracks. The album's first single, "I Believe in Love," is described by her manager, John Carter, as "Barry White-Donna Summer sounding, but then she proceeds to be herself and go all over the place" on the rest of the album. Carter also tells ICE that title track is a "folk-based tune which goes into this unbelievable bridge with [Gang Starr's] DJ Premier scratching on it. She's blessing everyone [in the lyrics]: O. J. Simpson, Saddam Hussein, Dr. Kevorkian...she blesses them all." Also appearing on the album is TLC's Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins on "Be Somebody," as well as a 62-piece orchestra. "Amen's" tune stack: "I Believe in Love," "Amen," "La Tonya," "Pearly," "Be Somebody," "Rhythm of Life," "Free," "Suwannee Jo" and "God is Watching...."
