Forgive me if it shows up twice. I haven't many details to tell right now, but I'm told by reliable friends that Kate Bush is one of the currently scheduled performers for NetAid. This will be the biggest (worldwide radio, TV, & web simulcast) consciousness raising concert/event ever attempted, happening in several locations on October 9th. You'll be hearing a lot more about it soon! I'm told NetAid will unviel their website in early September. MPO, the big French optical disc (MD, CD, etc.) manufacturer is looking for some really good artwork to grace the packaging of their Hi-Space blank MiniDisc line. The artwork has to fit certain genres (Classical, rock/folk, jazz, world, and so on), but that seems to be the only limitation. The grand prize winner and a guest get a trip to New York City... ;-) MPO has more details up at their Hi-Space website: http://www.hi-space.com/ but it can also be accessed from MPO's site: http://www.mpo.fr/ Anyone on the list wanna have a go? ;-) BTW: MPO is a big player here as they are in Europe. They're the chief partner in Americ Disc (which got launched in Canada but also now has plants in the States), which does work for a lot of indie acts and labels (usually through associate companies). Chances are quite good I could tell you which of your indie CDs were pressed at one of MPO's plants. They're THAT big. I've also limited myself to music that I have had for several years, so most current favorites are not on the list. I have tried to come up with a short list that would include something for just about any mood. These are 10 cds that keep ending up in the player year after year. 1) Richard Thompson "Daring Adventures" It's hard to pick a favorite from someone who has written so much great music, but this was the cd that first made me a devout follower. I love every song, especially "Jennie My Love." 2) The Roches "The Roches" "Hammond Song" is one of my favorite songs of all time. 3) k. d. Lang "Absolute Torch and Twang" This has to be the greatest country album ever released. Favorite song - -- "Tall in the Saddle" 4) Patti Smith "Wave" Favorite song -- "Dancing Barefoot" 5) Rickie Lee Jones "Rickie Lee Jones" This is one of the funkiest albums I've ever heard. I love "Last Chance Texaco." 6) Seamus Egan "A Week in January" "Dark Slender Boy" may be the most haunting tune I've ever heard. 7) Engilsh Beat "Special Beat Service" Got to have a little ska to keep the party going. Favorite songs --"I Confess" and "End of the Party." 8) Billy Bragg "Talking With the Taxman About Poetry" Most of it is cynical and off key, but somehow that just makes the whole thing more wonderful. 9) Michelle Shocked "Arkansas Traveller" I love the song "Prodical Daughter." 10) Oyster Band "Deserters" Favorite song "We Could Leave Right Now." This order is not necessarily a ranking, but simply the way they remained on the paper after I crossed out the ones that I figured I really could stand to leave behind. Cloud cover was heavy here too but I managed to be at the right spot at the right time. I don't want to rave too much, the experience of the total eclipse is really a bit beyond words (unless one is really an accomplished poet). While the sun is being eaten up, everything seems rather normal (except for the shape) until more than 90% of the disc is covered and then things start happening fast. THe play of colors is unbelieveable, there is gold, silver, electric blue and shocking pink from the protuberances. I had been skeptic as to whether the real thing would look as spectacular as the photos we know from astronomy books etc. but actually it was much more colorful (possibly due to currently exceptional solar activity)and dynamic. Stars come out, and animals *do* go crazy, e.g. there was a 'graureiher' (I have no idea what this would be in english except that it is a species of heron) in audible distress circling in constantly decreasing radius, that suddenly appeared when the lights went out. Anyway, my recommendation is that if one gets a chance to see a total eclipse without going to *extreme* ends like flying to Antarctica one should do it. About the poetry thing... I have no Idea what the Jewel book is like but was never terribly impressed by her song lyrics, so I´m not assuming too much, if they are any clue to her other writing. I do think the attention that somebody like Jewel might get for diary-type writings can be frustrating for people who put so much more work, and talent, in their writing and go unnoticed. This is just like people getting to record albums, and getting airplay, just because they are successful actors or models, athletes or whatever. It does sound like just so much marketing to me ie you can wring some additional money from the infatuated fan base as you know they´ll buy pretty much anything with the name/face of the artist on it anyway. That doesn´t mean it´s necessarily a bad thing if someone buys this and enjoys it. In my personal opinion it might help if books like this weren´t marketed as big poetic works but as a collection of unpublished song lyrics, notes, observations etc. But then I haven´t read the book so I´ll be quiet now...
