For a good free MP3 encoder, check out BladeEnc at http://home.swipnet.se/~w-82625/ , it's available for Win95/98/NT, BeOS, OS/2, Linux and other Unix variants. I've never used a synthesizer (but I love to hear them :) or a sound card, for that matter, but I gather most synths are digital these days; it seems reasonable that they'd have digital outputs. If your synthesizer has CD- or DAT-compatible digital output and your computer has a digital audio input, you could go straight from synthesizer to disk in the digital domain, then do your conversion to MP3. Alternatively, if digital input on the computer is problematic, you could use a CD recorder with digital input to create a CD, then convert the contents of the CD to MP3. Either way, you could avoid the analog domain and D/A-A/D conversions altogether. However, since I'm not familiar with the PC or music hardware involved, I could be dreaming... Bzzzzzt. :-) None of my digital synths have anything but analog outputs -- except for the MIDI out jack. Since they're performance devices first and recording devices second, nearly all of them have outputs intended for the PA or the amp stack. Now, some of the very latest ones have connectors for mass storage devices (i.e., hard drives) to load/save samples or patches, but hooking them up to a computer directly still wouldn't provide a digital output in the sense of "digital version of the output audio". I suspect it's only a matter of time till the new generation of synths starts coming with USB jacks on the back, though. :-) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 14:31:26 -0400 From: "Joanna M. About the tapes: Sure, just drop me a line = and I will do them for you - as long as you are still going to buy the = real thing! My e-mail address is (if it does not appear on the mailing = list) r.lauritsen@get2net.dk .=20 =20 About your comments regarding the artwork: point taken. I strongly = suspect that my reservations have something to do with those covers = resembling my notepad doodles from that very same period, so I should = not be taken seriously in this regard. Anyway, the covers are of no = importance when it comes to the music; I just feel that they might = easily be misleading as to the actual musical content. =20 Anyway, on a more (very!) mundane note, the eclipse was a huge = disappointment here; it was too cloudy for anything to be visible. And I = even had such high hopes for a dramatic occurrence - I was born on 11 = August 1972 at 11.45, so all sorts of people had been priming me to = expect to be hit by Nostradamus' comet, and, failing that, a piece of = the MIR. Ah, well - I never did believe in astrology anyway! =20 About the poetry discussion: I have not read any of the poetry by Jewel = or Ani (what do you expect from Scandinavian distribution!), so maybe I = should not venture any opinions on the matter, but one thing I learned = from my uni degree in literature is that people receive from poetry what = they go to find - or rather, they somehow find what they expect to find. = Consequently, a lot of poetry is accorded undue respect because it is = published in very 'official' anthologies, whereas other works are = exposed to unfair criticism or carelessness because of its mode of = representation. This is true for both audiences and publishers, so I = have no doubt that Jewel's poetry might not be as accomplished as that = of other authors, but I also believe that any literature may hold valid = and true experiences for certain audiences - so if someone discovers = that poetry sounds a chord with them through Jewel's possibly 'inferior' = poetry, I would still hold that this is a good thing. =20 Somehow I managed not to say anything in the above; the poetry = discussion really needs a LOT more thought and space than I have devoted = to it. Anyway, all the best to all of you out there, =20 Rene =20 NP: Orealis.
