Joe talked about the horrible state of poetry publishing....yeah, that's why my books have been published by small publishers--I can't see the point of even offering a collection of poetry to one of the big New York (or even Toronto) publishers, though I'll probably try that at least when I ever finish one of my novels. Self-publishing is the kiss of death in the poetry world--unlike in the music world that hasn't changed, so I'm not going to go there, but the small press may have distribution problems (that's what the Net is there for, right?) but it's wonderful to work with people for whom the bottom line isn't what's most important--the work is. Almost all of them are nonprofits. The only real money I've ever made with my poetry is through grants and reading at arts festivals. I've had the occasionally silly thought of getting together with other poets and forming two presses, which would put out each other's work. Distribution is so bad at the big stores that I generally know that I'm only going to find stuff I like at Borders if it's put out by a single publisher, Sun and Moon. At better bookstores, like DC's wonderful Bridge Street Books, I have a lot more to choose from, and as often as not do end up getting self-published chapbooks. I used to be on an avant-garde poetics mailing list through whom I got turned on to a lot of stuff. Their affiliated Website, the Electronic Poetry Center (http://wings.buffalo.edu/epc/ ) is where I find out about new stuff nowadays. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Shekhinah: The Presence http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 14:04:50 EDT From: MikeSAFH@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Today's your birthday, friend... - --part1_18bffd52.24e07242_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit In a message dated 8/9/99 12:18:08 PM Eastern Daylight Time, wpm@value.net writes: > Happy Birthday HAPPY!!! > > Bill & Billi Mazur > > > i*i*i*i*i*i > > i*i*i*i*i*i > > *************** > > *****HAPPY********* > > **************BIRTHDAY********* > > *************************************************** > > ************************************************************************** > * > > ********************* Happy Rhodes (no Email address) ******************** > * > > ************************************************************************** > * > > - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= > - > > > > - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- > =- > > > > Happy Rhodes Mon August 09 1965 HolyGhost > > > - -- Michael Matthews | mike@matthews.net | Web Hosting Geek - --part1_18bffd52.24e07242_boundary Content-Type: message/rfc822 Content-Disposition: inline Return-Path: Received: from aol.com (rly-yg02.mail.aol.com [172.18.147.2]) by air-yg01.mail.aol.com (v60.18) with ESMTP; Mon, 09 Aug 1999 12:18:08 -0400 Received: from mb3.mailbank.com (mb3.mailbank.com [209.133.104.8]) by rly-yg02.mx.aol.com (v60.18) with ESMTP; Mon, 09 Aug 1999 12:17:57 -0400 Received: from smoe.org (jane.smoe.org [24.30.216.55]) by mb3.mailbank.com (8.9.1/8.9.1) with ESMTP id JAA04237 for ; Mon, 9 Aug 1999 09:17:50 -0700 Received: from value.net (root@value.net [209.182.128.4]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with ESMTP id LAA23979 for ; Mon, 9 Aug 1999 11:09:28 -0400 (EDT) Received: from value.net (oak33.value.net [209.182.131.33]) by value.net (8.8.7/8.7.4) with ESMTP id IAA19144 for ; Mon, 9 Aug 1999 08:09:25 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <37AEEF3F.4326BEF6@value.net> Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 08:09:52 -0700 From: Billi Mazur X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.5 [en] (Win95; I) X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: Mike Matthews Subject: Re: Today's your birthday, friend... As they are, they look a lot like a snapshot of what was going on at the time, and that is what they sound like too. If happy had had a fully equipped studio and ages of time, she might have recorded these songs differently; if she´d had a designer agency at her command the covers might look different. But I like the very reduced instrumentation on these albums; sometimes the synth/guitar combination doesn´t work out at all but sometimes it does in unexpected ways. There are many really fascinating songs on them that I would´nt really like to hear in a 'fuller' instrumentation. In fact I´m listening to R1_&2 more than the others right now. That reminds me of the funniest thing Kristeen Young said during her set in Providence the other night: after blasting through something particularly bombastic from _Enemy_ (can't remember exactly which one it was), she remarked, "In case you can't tell, I've been listening to a lot of Britney Spears lately." :) >One would think MTV or VH1 would have on their site a >list of all the videos in circulation and info about who is in each one, >director, producer, weeks on the chart, summary, awards, etc. Guess not. Oh, no. Then their site would be *useful*. Can't have that! It's against the rules. :P +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 18:55:17 -0700 From: "Neil K. We ended up having quite the musical weekend this time around. Saturday night woj and I drove up to Providence to see Kristeen Young at a cafe/bar/artspace called AS220 (where, I noted, Melissa Ferrick will be playing on September 11 -- I'm seriously considering it). Kristeen did only a 30-minute set, but it was well worth the 3.5-hour round trip. After a couple false starts (her keyboard kept shutting off a few bars into the song) she got going in earnest, and did a good, solid set consisting of songs from _Enemy_ and two new ones, one of which is called "Everything Is Mine Because I Am Poor". I'm not sure what the other one is called - I'd never heard it before. As for the rest of the set list, I'll have to wait for Don Keller to regurgitate it back to me from his copy of the show. He knows all her song titles, I don't. I remember "Skeletons" going into "Incubator", and she ended with "Hi-TEK". The evening's fashion statement was from the _Enemy_ cover: braided pigtails, warpaint across the nose, and a metal breastplate thing we all decided was her "Amazon squaw" look, or "Kristeen, Warrior Princess". :) And as usual, she was wonderfully sweet, and almost painfully shy when not onstage. I think the fact that erswhile ectophile Don Keller was with us kind of freaked her out -- she said "wait a minute, aren't you supposed to be at the NEW YORK show?", to which he replied, "Oh, I'll be at that one too." :) Then another one of the handful of audience members recognized Don from all the Babe the Blue OX shows he's been to in NYC, and Kristeen kind of backed away. Maybe you had to have been there (and I'm sure knowing Don personally would help too), but it was hysterical. :) Then on Sunday it was up relatively early to head down to Norwalk to the SoNo Arts Celebration, where Annie Gallup and then Rachael Sage were going to be on the singer/songwriter stage in the afternoon. That stage turned out to be presided over by Rich F. of the Acoustic Studio in Stamford, which explained the lineup (among others, Peter Mulvey and Colleen Sexton were also on the weekend lineup there). Due to various annoyances we ended up missing the first half of Annie Gallup's set, but what we did hear her do was wonderful as always. She's still best described as a twisted Suzanne Vega, or Meryn Cadell on really weird drugs. Well worth checking out. After Annie's set, Rachael and the Lilith Fair incarnation of the Red Rubber Band took the stage: she was joined by a guitarist, violinist and percussionist, and they all somehow managed to fit on the teeny little stage. It was a really, really good set: a good mix of new stuff and favorites like "Sistersong" (which Rachael introed as having been written for Ani DiFranco, which I didn't know before, but made a lot of sense). She's finally getting to record the new album, which she said will be out in January -- yay! Yesterday's set might have been a nice little preview for ectofest - I think Rachael's going to have the same lineup with her in Danbury. It was great - all of you who are making the trek are in for a treat indeed. On the way out I picked up a flyer for the "Whitney Folk Fest", an event taking place at a park next to the Whitney Museum on Whitney Ave. in New Haven/Hamden, less than a quarter mile from my house. Dar Williams and Odetta are headlining on the evening of September 25. Yow! Dar playing within walking distance ... of course you know I'm going to be there. :) If any local ectophiles want to come too, drop me a line - if there's interest maybe we can do a barbecue here beforehand or something. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 22:03:54 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: new innocence mission?!?!?! Either your machine is weird, or mine is. I've got a PC with Win95, and I've had no problems playing the enhanced portion of the CD. But then, I've actually been pretty lucky, through no fault of my own, in being able to play all the enhanced CDs I have. Out of curiosity: when you say that your machine doesn't see the info, do you mean that you've got it set to autorun, but it doesn't, or that you don't see anything on the CD when you look at your CD-ROM drive in windoze explorer? (Calls the CD "Rosechron_i" here.) I guess you could call it a distinction within the genre. There are performance/slam writers/ poets whose work is primarily meant to be heard and that doesn't translate so well on the page. And on the other side you have traditional poets whose work is meant to be both read on the page and performed. I'd call Patti Smith a performance poet and I'd enjoy her stuff in concert, but I don't care to read her stuff on the page. Ani's performance or spoken-word pieces might be better than Jewel's verse because she's more mature than Jewel and looks at the injustices of the world in which she lives, rather than the self-absorbed musings of Jewel's first book. But maybe like you say the definition of poetry Neile and I have is a tad narrow. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Aug 1999 23:52:16 EDT From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Kate Bush performs again! I knew THAT would get the attention of many ectophiles! It's NOT a cruel joke either. Although I haven't many details to tell right now, I can tell you Kate Bush is one of the currently scheduled performers for NetAid. This will be the biggest (worldwide radio, TV, & web simulcast) consciousness raising concert/event ever attempted, happening in several locations in early October. You'll be hearing a lot more about it soon! I'm told NetAid will unviel their website in early September. If this is all it takes for acceptance, you should know that Jewel has been performing poetry "throughout her career" too. I don't see how that affects the quality of the poems one way or the other (better cause she's been doing it longer? Worse if it were a sudden hobby?). In fact, Jewel has been diarizing and writing poems long before she started writing songs. neal np: weird nightmare: meditations on mingus - a hal willner production ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #270 **************************
