This is VERY hard....I'll have to bend the rules just a little bit! Some of them have to be double disc sets!!! The artists are in somewhat order, and if two albums are listed - the first one is the ABSOLUTE MUST HAVE, just in case I couldn't bring double jewel boxes...... :o) 1. HAPPY RHODES - Rearmament & The Keep 2. MATRACA BERG - The Speed of Grace & Lying to the Moon 3. CHRISTOPHER YOUNG - Flowers in the Attic [motion picture soundtrack] 4. OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - Xanadu [motion picture sdtk.] & The Rumour 11. BETTE MIDLER - Thighs and Whispers & Some People's Lives I COULDN'T DO JUST 10!!!!! GOD forgive me..... as for the PERFECT compilation - if I were stranded on a desert island and had the above discs, the compilation would be very different than if I DIDN'T have the discs. Many of my favorite songs would be on the discs I already have with me. So I'm going to list both. SO, here's my PERFECT compilation - IF I was deserted on an island with ONLY the discs above. This is the songs I'd HAVE to have that I couldn't bring with me........and of course the compilation would have to be a double set!! :o) I CAN'T HELP IT....I'M A MUSIC LOVER!!!! 1. HAPPY RHODES - Ode & Mercy Street I Cannot Go On & You Never Told Me 2. MATRACA BERG - Slow Poison [acoustic] & Back When We Were Beautiful 3. TORI AMOS - Here. KRISTY MCNICHOL - Hold On & Pumpin' and Blowin' 10. RONNIE JAMES DIO - One Night in the City & Stargazer NOW...if I had to make the PERFECT compilation of my favorite songs, here it is - and I'm gonna try to STICK to the rules this time.......and they aren't in order by the way.....and I'm sure tons will be missing....... 1. It > certainly isn't going to win over anybody who hates him, but it should > make fans happy if they can stomach it all. I also agree with this. Smartie Mine is good in that it allows Bern to release a lot of his unreleased songs (and it's damn brave of him to, being under a major label contract... much braver than Jewel or others with a huge reportoire who release a twelve-song album every four years and leave it at that). But it also is very long... I've never made it through the whole thing straight through. And although the CD has some great songs -- "Talking Woody, Bob, Bruce, and Dan Blues", "Krautmeyer", "One Thing Real", "True Revolutionaries" -- it is very inconsistent and I don't like the production. I also didn't much care for Ani DiFranco's production of "Fifty Eggs", much preferring Chuck Plotkin's work on Bern's eponymous full-length debut. By the way, on Dan Bern's website (http://www.dbhq.com), they have released a single for the song "Kids' Prayer". The song was written in the wake of the Jonesboro school massacre, and bootleg versions of the song were played on a number of radio stations following the Colorado high school shooting. DBHQ decided to release the song as a single, and give all the proceeds to the victims' families. It's an excellent, very powerful song. Dan Bern can be very acerbic, but when he gets serious (other examples would be "Wasteland" or "Oh Sister"), he can be downright beautiful. The song is perhaps reminiscent of Cheryl Wheeler's "If it were up to me", but better. - --mm - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 302 Mason Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-2106 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Voicemail: (517) 355-9380 Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. I would agree. _Big Calm_ was one of my favorites of last year. But the first album, while enjoyable, just doesn't grab me. I think I prefer _Big Calm_ because the songs are more diverse and have stronger structures. The first album's songs are all a lot less distinct, and don't stand out as much in my mind. I have been waiting for an album of such involving beauty for some time and it competes strongly with the finest output of the most established of New Age Divas. Aside from its slightly incongrouos title, Pagan Saint's latest offering offers powerful portraits of the sacred and emotional journey of the loss and regaining of faith within the relationship of lovers that heaven and earth seem interchangeable. The tranquil radiance of this CD is typified by "Dreamtime Waltz," where Chris White sings sweetly over a backdrop of David Durlings cello in a song that seems to flow like a gentle breeze. "Prayer For Home" is equally tender and will temporarily convince you that the world isn't such a terrible place after all. Featuring the sensual alchemy and compositions of vocalist Chris White and keyboardist Peter Kater, along with legendary bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel); virtuoso reed player Paul McCandless; maverick cellist David Darling; and the outstanding talents of violinist Cecil Hooker; guitarist Randy Chavez; drummer Timm Biery; percussionists Geoffrey Gordon, Robert Jospe, Michael Moses Tirsch and Glen Velez; bassist Wade Matthews; among others. Passionate and soulful, Pagan Saints rides the edge between New Age, Rock and World Music. It is at once innovative and deeply familiar - vividly diverse and satisfyingly whole. I can't recommend this album highly enough, for me it has almost been life-changing. Paul "it is no longer raining in boston" Kim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Aug 1999 22:55:41 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: Donna De Lory & Bliss East Coast Summer Tour I'm forwarding the itinerary for the group Bliss, which features Donna De Lory (backup singer for Madonna), Cameron Stone (cellist who's played with Poe, GnR, and others), Jay Bellerose (drummer with Paula cole of course) and Mark Gorman (who i believe plays with Mary Lydia Ryan). This is a little late as some of the dates have already expired, but i'm busy with the end of school, so shove off, will ya? :) Sadly, I won't be able to see them open for Merrie Amsterburg at the Lizard Lounge next friday since I'll be in Shirley, MA checking out Svetlana Werner.
