The Windham Hill page about this Samite album casually mentions only three of the *many* players involved with the record, Will Ackerman, Patti Cathcart and Michael Manring. These three are mentioned because they are major Windham Hill artists. It's no sinister conspiracy, it's just the label plugging their own. Leave them alone. Coming from a songwriter's perspective, i think too often "dance" and "house" music lacks in song structure, and instead the concentration in on beats or drum loops. putting it near the end seem to make sense as well, since there certainly were "better" albums released in the 90's but i probably would have ranked it between 65 and 75 actually. also i would have picked BJORK's HOMOGENIC over POST. i wasn't overly fond of POST, but i thought HOMOGENIC was EXCELLENT and groundbreaking in it's use of electronic matched with symphonic strings and song structure. and i would have picked the LIVE album by PORTISHEAD over their two studio albums. and in truth, i would not have put THE RED SHOES on the list of 90 of the best 90's albums. i thought it was subpar and a bit bland in truth. sorry. had the SENSUAL WORLD been released in the 90's though, it most certainly would have made the list. (well, at least, i think it would have). which of course makes me realize that in an entire decade, KATE has only released one CD. hmmmm... i do feel there were certain CD's missing from the 90's list, but and snaps to the SPIN for picking LISA GERMANO's GEEK the GIRL to be on the list. a totally underappreciated album to be sure. but really they should have waited until the 90's were over. stupid of them. other missing albums on the list that would have made my list: BETH ORTON - CENTRAL RESERVATION THROWING MUSES - THE REAL RAMONA EMMYLOU HARRIS - WRECKING BALL RED HOUSE PAINTERS - SONGS FOR A BLUE GUITAR LAURIE ANDERSON - STRANGE ANGELS JANE SIBERRY - WHEN I WAS A BOY AIMEE MANN - WHATEVER STINA NORDENSTAM - DYNAMITE THE MAGNETIC FIELDS - GET LOST (though i think STEPHIN MERRITT's new three CD trilogy 69 love songs to be released next month, may bump this one out) i do think i am more dissappointed with the VH1's list of women in rock. yeah, snaps for including BESSIE SMITH at 26 and BILLIE HOLIDAY at 6 and including people like PATSY CLINE, SARAH VAUGHN, and ETTA JAMES in a list that is titled WOMEN IN ROCK (note the last word ROCK which apparently they took a liberal interpretation of which i have no qualms with). but if you are going to include BESSIE SMITH you should also have included her predecessor MA RAINEY, as well as her ancestor NINA SIMONE. and lets not forget important artists like KRISTIN HERSH, AIMEE MANN, LISA GERMANO, and SUZANNE VEGA. and to put TINA WEYMOUTH at 99 and ALANIS MORISSETTE at 53 (two above PJ HARVEY!) is horrific. ugh. two snaps for putting CYNDI LAUPER above WHITNEY HOUSTON and JANET JACKSON though. when is she (finally) going to get the respect that she deserves? of course the fans voted her at 22 on the list, so maybe she finally is getting the respect she deserves. oh and i am surprised that it hasn't been suggested already, but why don't you just play the ECTOPIA compilation during the interludal (is that a word INTERLUDAL?) parts of ECTOFEST? be kinda nice to tie ECTO the list in with ECTOFEST... of course some of us won't be there to hear either or.... :( irvin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 05 Aug 1999 06:44:48 -0400 From: Joe Casadonte Subject: October Project News? Actually the song has nothing to do with Baez or any other songwriter other than the fact that Joan covered it. Dar wrote the song for/about a dance teacher she had in her teens who inspired her to persue her artistic endeavors. The association with Baez was propagated by interviewers who kept asking "is this song about Baez". Dar kept explaining the story until she got tired of it, than one day, sick of explaining, she said "Yes, it's about Joan" and that ended the discussion. Yngve always says "oh, you should just write something!" and I've finally managed to convince myself to take the plunge. And I'd like to thank everybody involved in Ecto for all of the wonderful cds and artists they've recommended - I've gone from somebody who had the hardest time finding music they love, to somebody who has EWS about 90% of the time. So maybe I should be accusing rather than thanking *grin* but I love it anyway. And the little push I needed to post - the desert island question. It comes up every once in a while, and I always think about it a little, but this time I'm sharing it with the world. And gracious, as always it's the hardest question ever! It took a while to grow on me, but "Hunger" is now one of my favorite BK albums. If you're looking for suggestions, I think the best downloadable tracks are "Dictaphone" and "Sidestep the Bullet". The latter one is very sad, making me think it was about Jeff Buckley. Unfortunately, my favorite song from the album -- the title track -- is not on the mp3 page. "Christopher Says" is also available, and is also a fine song. That song was originally recorded for Destination Anywhere, but was dropped from the album when Brenda moved from Sony to Shanachie. Anyhow, just being the loyal Brenda Kahn delegate I'm always trying to be, as her music has done more for me than anyone else's... - --Mark - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 302 Mason Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-2106 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Voicemail: (517) 355-9380 Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. I don't know who wrote the Judy Collins song "Hello, Hooray," so it could have been Rolf Kempf for all I know. That song reminds me of being 17, just graduating high school, and experimenting with certain substances that made the world seem a whole lot more vivid. A few years later, Meg Christian did a cover of that song, which I also liked, in a different way. She added a verse or two and made it into a song about coming out. Her version was warmer, not as glorious as Judy's, but more down-to-earth. Then again, I was also more down-to-earth by then. :) Come to think of it, I think I *have* heard Alice Cooper's version. Or maybe I've just seen the title before. In any case, that has to go on the "world's weirdest covers" list, along with that Australian acapella version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Alices version sounds like a rockified show tune though. I can recommend the music video if you can find it anywhere. Cheers! This *is* the same song, Alices arrangement just changes the words around a bit. Wild! I'm sorry, but Alice wins in an a/b comparison, I think. Cheers! I fell in love with Jewel when I heard her sing with Melissa Etheridge on VH-1, after that I saw her live and couldn't believe the richness of her voice... 'Pieces' album I liked, then the 'Spirit' album really disappointed me... mainly because I've heard all her bootleg stuff. I can' t believe she didn't release "carnivore, sometimes it be that way, or any of the unique, raw songs circulating around... instead of the pop stuff. I love Tori, Ani, ... and if I hadn't heard her 'released' albums I'd add Jewel to that list. When I first bought Big Calm I didn't like it as much as their first album (the name of which eludes me in my just-out-of-bed stupor), but it's grown on me a lot. Part Of The Process is a great song with a wonderful groove and guitar line, and Skye's voice is incredible. Some very sophisticated tunes and real songs. They remind me quite a lot of Lamb, but maybe slightly less dance-y. Also bits of Massie Attacke and Portishead in there. I second Bill's recommendation. Morcheeba ROCKS! The best song on this album, imho, is "Let me see".
