Can anyone tell me the name of the 2nd song that Jewel sang on Storytellers tonight? It was such a great song and really rocking! I have to agree with whomever said this before, I think she shouldn't be so afraid to add the more "rockier" songs to her CD's. But maybe she didn't do it with _Spirit_ because the whole CD was kind of about something different? Who knows for sure...but I also thought it was great that she mentioned the EDA's! My faith has been restored in Jewel. :) - -Jenni np - Spirit - --- Jenni ftejenni@radiks.net | Jenni@fumblers.org | AIM - FumbleIn2U Midwest Fumblers | http://fumblers.org/MidwestFumblers Check out the talented Nina Storey | http://listen.to/NinaStorey "..so often our dreams become our hobbies and it deadens our passions." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 23:40:32 EDT From: Justduff@aol.com Subject: Beth Hart HI, Here's a name I haven't seen on here, Beth Hart is coming off a write up in Billboard and is out on tour. She's a young singer/songwriter/pianist Beth Hart has a passion for the creation of a pure, organic rock sound. Her voice brings it all together with a striking depth of emotion, conviction, and her own built-in loudness button. This has been used a lot in music but she does sound a bit like Janis Joplin. So if you get a chance check her out. Her album comes out on August 3rd it's called "Screaming for my Supper" Tour dates have been attached below. John Lurie >How much Jewel-music does it take before the rash appears? Neal, you're really not that cruel, are you? :) Probably about thirty seconds of "I'm Sensitive" would do the trick. By the end of the song, I'd be a leper. >They are both surprisingly melodic and fun to listen to. I'm thinking mostly of Lurie's earlier work as "experimental", since he was trying for -- and pretty much succeeded at -- making a "punk jazz" band with the first Lounge Lizards' album. Between him and Arto Lindsay (in a more neurotic, less playful mood, more "Only One Party" and less _Mundo Civilizado_), the atonal experimentation ran pretty high. It seems like Lurie has developed a hysterical (in that deadpan sort of way) sense of humour and a greater sense of play, as evinced in more traditional sounding albums like _Voice of Chunk_. I started getting into him after thoroughly enjoying his performance in _Stranger Than Paradise_ (he plays the role of Bela "Willie" Monar, a thorougly assimilated Hungarian immigrant who develops a strange friendship with his new-imigre adolescent cousin when she comes to stay with him for a few days), and was expecting something harsh, atonal, and Sonic Youth-esque. Luckily the ear bleeding isn't the rule all the time. >The Kronos piece is called Bella By Barlight and is on the album Winter Was >Hard. It's pretty much like you described, and would be great movie music >(for a very short movie - it's under 3 minutes long). \ "Bella by Barlight" was the opening and closing theme for _Stranger Than Paradise_ (the closing was a reprise called "A Woman Can Take You To Another Universe; Sometimes She Just Leaves You There", which I'm listening to as we speak). So your instinct was correct. While I love the _String Quartets for Film_ record, I must admit that I think it works better in the context of the movies themselves. Some of it is breathtakingly beautiful, like the opening track and "The Lampposts are Mine"...but since it's the actual music from the film, and not abbreviated suites, it gets repetitive fairly fast. Though StP is one of my all-time faves and was a film that inspired me to make my own, it's also a record I don't find myself listening to as much as I probably should. So how's the rest of the music from _Run Lola Run_? I just saw the film and I think that's going on my "to buy" or "to review" list... - --Chelsea - -- "But I guess that's my kind of sweetness -- my heart is a violent one, but I mean well." -- Kristin Hersh, on "Cathedral Heat" *~*~* chelsea the mod pixie*tugboat@channel1.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 23:10:30 -0500 From: Kay S Cleaves Subject: Feng shui basics Hey-- Gee, the feng shui bit was not what I'd expected people to pick up on in that message, but oh well. I use a bit of it myself, my mother is a big advocate of it in her office. (She's Chinese, I'm half Chinese, we're also both big advocates of acupuncture and Tai Ch'i...) My apartment design uses a bit of feng shui, although Neal probably couldn't tell from the shambles it was in when he was there. But when it's clean, the energy disperses itself rather well. Some basic advice--make sure that dominant pieces of furniture are in alignment--my beds all run East to West, for example. And make sure that places where you spend a lot of time are facing different winds, so that you can spread your energy about a bit. My bed faces West, my desk faces East, my kitchen table faces North, the bathtub and my speakers for my stereo point South. Varying the height of things also helps quite a bit--I have a very tall lamp next to my very short bed, I have no light sources on the same level, etc. Of course, I only live in a small studio, so it's difficult to do very much with it, but I do what I can. Plants help, too. Ideally, if I had a nice tall plant on the other side of my bed from the lamp, the c'hi (energy) would be more balanced. But I don't get enough sun in the apartment to really support a plant. Moving things around occasionally is a good idea, too. Ch'i is like dust, it collects in strange places, and moving things about somewhat helps very muchly. Wonder if there's such a thing as a little dustpan and broom to sweep up ch'i bunnies that collect under the bed? Another thing that helps is little mirrors or glass globes to reflect the energy about. If there is a place where the ch'i is getting overly concentrated (somewhere that you spend far too much time (In my case it's my computer) a small mirror placed around there helps bounce the energy that gets clogged there into other parts of the living space. But that's pretty much all I know. My mother is the real expert on it, I can write to her for some good books on it if you're really interested... But then, I also spend a good deal of time meditating in an attempt to redistribute my energy throughout my body. When I'm at work, I focus it in a spot just between my chest and my neck--it keeps me balanced and keeps the stress from getting to my stomach, where it would make me ill. But then, when I get home, I have to redistribute that energy evenly throughout my body so that I can function normally and not be a stage manager all the time. Ugh, what a life that would be! So, your mileage may vary depending on how freely your energy flows and to what extent you even believe in the liquid nature of energy anyways. - --Kay, the East/West filter... np: Jewel, Rare Angels (1995)--had to go back to the good ol' Jewel. nr: Rereading "Catcher in the Rye" ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
