Lots of college age frat boys and sorority girls as well as high school kids...prevailingly white jcrewers getting drunk and rowdy (but, surprisingly, not too rowdy)...also there seemed to be quite a number of family units with children and parents attending...and most surprising to me was the very vocal response the Beautiful South got...there were a lot of fans in the audience and they also seemed to be charming those who didn't know them. On tuesday, when Jewel played up here in MA, I checked ticketmaster.com to see what kind of tickets I could get if i could go (I couldn't because I had an ensemble and studio work to do in the evening). I was surprised to see that I could get 4th row dead center tickets for 1 and 5th row dead center for 2. I checked back about a half hour later and the best available was 4th row a little to the left. YOu gotta love it when complimentary tickets are released a couple days before a show. Stevie Poltz covers the TLC song "Waterfalls" (don't go chasing waterfalls...) and does it as only a white boy can. :) AFAIK, stinky (Jeff Aemedt) left the rugburns to form his own band, so the Rugburns, for all intents and purposes, is Steve now. It's a good analogy for this evening - i'm just about completely tied in knots after trying to sort out the mail. The service i use has been telling me that it loves me but wouldn't let me actually read my mail - it finally gave in tonight - amazing what a hammer will do - and i've spent the evening catching up on my very surrealistically-ordered ecto mail. couple of things this evening: a possible recommendation - 'black the sun' by Alex Lloyd. he's Australian but completed production of the album in LA. the tracks are quite diverse in instrumental style and one track has vocals which even remind me of Jesus Jones [though i must admit i seem to find that a lot of artists remind me of Jones for reasons which still remain unclear to me]. Lloyd's lyrics can't be said to be joyous but if you're into more angst-ridden songs then you may enjoy his work. today i also heard about a new[?] oz band called Lino - their music has been described as being a mix of Portishead, Everything But The Girl and The Sundays. i'm going to check them out and if the description is accurate. they've been released on Virgin so i'm not sure what availability will be like outside oz. [i don't hold much stock in these 'sounds like' descriptions - not after reading that VAST was similar to Enya.] finally - an aside - my mother was looking at my 'safe for parents' web site [mein-bitte] and saw that i identified MikeyMA and myself as being ectophiles. i think the 'philes' part freaked her as i received a phonecall requesting clarification. she'd thought i'd spelt it wrong and, after consulting the dictionary, thought that the reference was to a type of parasite[?] [i did reassure her that we weren't.]:) Sue np 'MWABT' and 'Black The Sun'-Alex Lloyd [but not at the same time though tonight anything is possible] http://www.homestead.com/mangled_avocado http://www.homestead.com/mein_bitte "Confusion is set to lead the blind" - Alex Lloyd __________________________________________________________________ Get your free Australian email account at http://www.start.com.au/ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This email server is running an evaluation copy of the MailShield anti- spam software. Essentially, it is the same album as originally self-published Down Under, save for the artwork changes Louisa described on her website. The lily on the lime-green cover looks nice, but I prefer Karan Wicks' more colourful painting shown on the original Aussie release. Hyperium also nixed the Rebecca John watercolours orignally used inside the insert. The only things Hyperium kept were the lyrics for the title song (no other lyrics are provided for either issue) and the photo of Louisa taken by her husband Mark. Hyperium also claimed a 1999 Copryight (mechanical, too) on their issue. The original Aussie issue (1998) is Copyrighted in Louisa's name. Today I got a message from Louisa on the artwork change: It turns out that Karan Wicks is a close friend of hers, and it was hard for Louisa to break the news re Hyperium's art changes (although she took it well, and Louisa still supports her art). KW is still listed in the "thank you" credits. BTW, the Hyperium deal (a 3-year one) only covers Europe (my copy was pressed in Germany by Optimal). North American rights are apparently still availible. That's enough hair-splitting for now. I'd better plough through the rest of my mail before I head out for a coffeehouse night with good friends. There's even a sound sample of the song Happy sings on ("Stars To Share"), which is pretty neat. The only e-dress I can find on the site is consumers@windham.com. Again, as Happy asked, do NOT say "Happy asked me to write ..." This is a fan response. Heck, I'd be sending them an e-mail if I'd discovered this on my own, and I'm sure many of you would, too. Let's help Happy get the credit she deserves. I'm sure enough Echoes listeners frequent the Windham Hill site to merit mentioning Happy as singing on this track. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 17:23:25 -0400 From: meredith Subject: info re samite album Hi! According to the info I'd received she was going to be singing on the title track, and I listened to the sound sample and it sure sounds like her, but you don't have her listed as one of the guest artists on the page. Is that indeed Happy Rhodes? > >If so, why isn't she credited as singing on this track? It's a gorgeous song, and even from what I can hear in the sample it sounds like she made a significant contribution to it. > >Happy may be obscure, but she's received significant exposure on the PRI program Echoes, which is heavily programmed with Windham Hill releases. I'm sure quite a few Echoes listeners are going to be interested in Samite's album, and you might encourage people who enjoy Happy's own work to buy the Samite album who might not have otherwise, had Happy not been involved. But she's not mentioned, so how is anyone going to know? I only knew of her involvement because I am a longtime member of a mailing list to discuss her music (ecto@smoe.org), and the webmistress of the Ecto Home Page (http://www.smoe.org/ecto) which is devoted to her work. > >It just seems odd to me that someone featured prominently on a track which you are allowing people to sample at your site is neglecting to give credit to the vocalist. Is there a reason for this? If not, I'd sure like to see this error rectified and Happy's name included as among the guest artists ASAP. Until then, I think I'll hold off on buying the Samite album. I don't feel comfortable doing so otherwise. > >Thanks for your time, > +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | ectofest '99: sat. sept. 4, 1999 kenosia park, danbury, ct | | http://www.ectofest.org | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 16:21:50 -0700 From: "Michael Bowman" Subject: New Sophie Hawkins album I just picked up Timbre, the new Sophie B. Hawkins album, and am listening to it for the second time. My first impression is that, overall, it's better than her earlier albums, but there aren't any standout songs for me so far. I like it though. Michael Bowman nr. Fritz Leiber. I've been busy, well busy avoiding unpacking. I can almost always find something I'd rather do. Just now I am taking a break from moving my furniture around and around the living room. You'd think with the small amount of furniture I have it would be trivial to figure out where to put it, but nothing seems to feel quite right. I think I need to go reclaim all of my plants, which will fill up some of the spaces that need filling and make things feel better. Looks like I'll be going back to New Mexico again! There are still a few minor approvals to get through, but I passed the main one and was selected for the job that would bring me back there for 2 to 3 years. While it's not worked out yet, I expect to head back late this year or early next year. Kinda makes motivating myself to unpack even harder. I listened to Ruby 2 on the way back. It may be my least favorite so far. They didn't make much of an effort to fill it with a plot, just a bunch of barely connected sketches, some of which were unbelievably bad. (The House of Whoopee went on for way way way too long, as did the Boogerman jokes.) Here's hoping the next one, for my move back, will be an improvement. Every other one seems to be pretty good. Sorry for the 100% non-ecto personal (though at least not embaressing) mail. Um, let's see, can I think of any ecto content to redeem myself?? I was browsing through Bitch, a very amusing 'zine, this afternoon. I should have bought it for the article on inventing suitable female oriented prophanity. However, there was a very nice review of the Miss Murgatroid album (featuring Petra Hayden) in the back, which made me wonder... Jeff B, did you ever get this? That's all I can think of. Pretty lame. neal np: Happy at the Tin Angel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Aug 1999 01:36:32 -0400 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Pascale Valenta / Les Arts Sauts I just got back from an utterly amazing performance by Les Arts Sauts, a French trapeze act currently playing in a humongous inflatable tent outside the Kennedy Center. The trapeze performance is excellent, with almost telepathic connectiveness among the performers. The real knockout though, was the music, performed live by a cellist, bass player, jaw harp player, and singer Pascale Valenta. Valenta pretty much puts any three other singers around to shame -- at various times she sounded rather like Lisa Gerrard, Faye Wong, and Meredith Monk, often all within the same phrase. Most of the music is original, but it also included arrangement of Breton and Sephardic traditional songs, a movement of a Kodaly cello concerto, and arrangements of two Meredith Monk pieces (sung by, I think, the male trapezists). I haven't heard of Valenta before, and there doesn't seem to be info on the Web. According to the program "Singer Pascale Valenta has performed with various groups of diverse musical styles and joined Les Arts Sauts full time in December of 1977, giving up her day job at IBM." (Hey, I quit jobs at IBM too, so why can't I sing like that ?-]) I managed to grab the CD of the music, which apparently was released very recently, not having been ready for their previous gig at Lincoln Center. I'm eagerly looking forward to experiencing it. Dunno if the disc will be available other than at gigs. From what I can make out of the liner notes (my French is at best spotty), you may be able to order it from Les Arts Sauts, 61 Rue Victor Hugo, 93500 Pantin (which I suppose is in France). np.
