(was: Tin Angel) There have been a lot of great, detailed reviews of the weekends Happy show, so I don't have much to add but my own personal impressions. I thoroughly enjoyed both shows. It was pretty amazing how much stuff they could cram onto the tiny Tin Angel stage. Happy had a ton of effects with her, but they didn't seem to be used too much. I think more of them showed up in the sound check than during the show. That really as an observation, rather than a complaint, cause the songs certainly weren't missing layering and effects. Between the great bass and drum work and whatever Happy was adding on guitar and keyboards, the songs had plenty going on. Bon's opening set was pretty impressive, and I enjoyed his work throughout. It's good Happy could find another imaginative guitarist to play with her. However, I'm in the camp that really missed Kevin. Bon did some nice stuff, but I was always in awe of what Kevin could do. It was great to hear so much of the MWABT material live, though I think my favorite song of the night was still Warpaint. I'm just curious if I am the only person that isn't bowled over by Mercy Street? I enjoy Happy's versions, but they strike me as pretty, rather than moving. PG's version seems plaintive and aching, and I just don't get that undercurrent of emotion from Happy's cover. It was great to meet a number of new ectophiles and see some familiar old faces again. neal np: Cry Cry Cry nr: Mrs. Dalloway - Virginia Woolf ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 23:43:52 -0400 From: neal copperman Subject: other reviews I feel like I've been kind of lax in commenting on stuff I've seen recently, so I may as well catch up on that. Following the instructions that were beamed into my head from that implant that was inserted into the back of my head on my first visit to Boonton, I went down to the Smithsonian to see Nadjme with Church of Betty. This was rather a strange evening. For the few people who might know what this means - the concert was on the steps of the Sackler Museum. For the rest, that's the Asian Art Museum. The weird part is that there really isn't a good place for people to hang out while the music is going on. Mostly, people sat on the sidewalk. I got there early and claimed a nice spot in a small island of grass around a sculpture, fenced in by a small circle of flowers. I was really excited by what I had read about Church of Betty, but I ended up not being particularly impressed with them. They play Indian influenced music with a strong Western influence. The result sounded to me largely like a frat party light reggae band, but instead of the Island rhythms we had some meandering guitar lines and tablas. They were a perfectly fine backup band for Najme when she came out though, and her set was a lot of fun. I'd never heard any of her music before, but found it immediately catchy. Since the set was largely Indian film music, songs that were supposedly standards on the order of Summertime and Gershwin tunes, it shouldn't be surprising that they were really catchy. It was fun watching all the people in the audience who could sing along to many of the songs. This was Najme's first DC appearance, and their was a pretty good size crowd out to welcome her. THe response was enthusiastic enough that she came back for multiple encores, and had to ad lib a few of them, since she had used up all the songs that Church of Betty knew. She didn't have the crystaline voice or experimental nature of Sheila Chandra, but performed what seemed like great Indian summertime bubblegum pop. - -------- A few nights later I caught Melissa Ferrick and Cosy Sheridan at the Ram's Head. I was at a table of CS fans who didn't know Melissa, which I thought was kind of interesting. I'd never heard Cosy Sheridan before, and thought her opening set was nice enough, though I wouldn't buy an album. Her strongest asset was definitely her wicked sense of humour. Her humorous and topical songs were some of the funniest I'd heard, but when she was more serious, her voice was very average, and her songwriting and music seemed like standard folk without much to distinguish it. The crowd was pretty sparse, but very enthusiastic. There have been a number of comments about Melissa's recent shows, and I have to agree that I've never seen her this pumped up before. I don't have the most recent album (which she was sold out of), so most of the songs were new to me. Her set was very aggressive, which came as a big surprise to the Cosy Sheridan fans. She attacks her guitar in that frenzied ani difranco-style, and played fast and furious. Despite later learning that she is going in for throat surgery soon, I thought her singing was more open and stronger than it's been in the past. She has a somewhat odd, pinched singing style, and I was amazed at how she really opened up and sang on some of her newest songs (particularly Raleigh, North Carolina). Another striking aspect of the show was that it contained no moments of bitterness. Since her bad experiences with being on a major label, she's been pretty angry about it, but right now she just seemed really happy with where she was at. This didn't seem to diminish the intensity of the show at all, and made it more fun to watch. So, in case it wasn't clear, that's an enthusiastic recommendation to see Melissa Ferrick if she comes to your town. neal np: CRy Cry Cry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Jul 1999 00:46:54 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: Sarah Slean's "High" now up at website Hiya folks, sorry for the crossposting...
