Hi, I'm also new to this list and have to say that during the time that I've been lurking around, I've "felt" what Bill is describing. I love reading everyone's posts about all of the different artists they've discovered, etc. Music has been a very influential force in my life. My parents always had music playing around the house. I grew up listening to Jimi, The Doobie Brothers, The Boss, The Doors...okay, so my parents were a bit on the hippy side..lol...but my love for music just grew. When I first hit the Internet scene, I discovered the joy of mailing lists. The first one I joined was the Sarah McLachlan list, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. I've been on a few others since then, the Sheryl Crow list etc., but the only one I've stuck with is the FTE list. Even though we have our share of up and down times, it's like a family to me. Heck, I even met the love of my life there and he moved here (Omaha, NE) from Virginia last year. I've also discovered so many more artists from the various lists that I'm on, that I would have never discovered otherwise. One of my absolute favorites is Emm Gryner. I can guarantee you that I would have never heard of her on my own, if it wouldn't have been for my friend Jess and countless others, posting about how wonderful she was. Another artist that I've discovered on my own and am telling everyone I can about, is Nina Storey. Her latest CD, "Shades," is an amazing piece of work. She has the voice of true soul singer and she mixes it well with a bit of blues and alternative. A must see! Her live performances totally out-do any studio performances too! If anyone is curious about her, email me, or her website is www.ninastorey.com . So, I just wanted to close saying that I look forward to getting to know some of you and I look forward to the thrill of discovering more artists that touch our souls. :) - -Jenni np - "Public" by Emm Gryner (& anxiously awaiting her new CD!) - --- Jenni ftejenni@radiks.net | Jenni@fumblers.org | AIM - FumbleIn2U Midwest Fumblers | http://fumblers.org/MidwestFumblers Check out the talented Nina Storey | http://listen.to/NinaStorey "People talk about my image like I come in two dimensions, like lipstick is a sign of my declining mind.." | Ani DiFranco ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 11:24:37 -0600 From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Hello's & Nina Storey Jen(ni) wrote: > > Hi, I'm new to this list, been lurking around for a couple of weeks now and I > have to say that I love it here! (This year's, btw, is the very talented Wendy Woo, who not only has her own cd out, but she also recently produced Sally Taylor's cd -- yes, Sally, daughter of James and Carly Simon.) Nina's a bluesy, rocky woman and is very talented indeed. Nina plays lots of local gigs, and it's great to know she's receiving national recognition -- kind of following in Sheri Jackson's footsteps - -- another local artist. It was great to see Sheri's "Maple Tree" on the XPN/World Cafe compilation last year. In between your message and this response, I've popped over to Amazon.com, listened to a couple Nina Storey selections, and made another contribution to the Amazon.com fund. I, too, have discovered plenty of new musicians here on Ecto. Every so often I think to myself, "there can't be anybody else out there who's as good as ____________(fill in the blank.") And then there is. I have a fondness for October Project, and while I haven't discovered any other groups exactly like October Project, which disbanded not too many years ago, I have found other groups that are equally pleasurable. - --Bill n.p. Actually, it's fun ordering a CD from the artist herself or himself, since you often get to chit chat with that musician. I ran into Happy, Bon, and the cute drummer (Bob?) before and between shows last night. Somehow I always manage to bump into Happy around the restrooms. Not that I hang there, mind you.... As for the shows....wow! I've seen 8-10 shows now, and I'll say that last night was the best. As much as I love Kevin's playing, and I am amazed and mesmerized by Kevin's playing, Bon just blew me away! It's hard to describe why this was so different, but I'll give it a go. I think is was how much presence Bon added to the songs with such minimal, precise playing. Yeah, that's it -- he knew precisely the right sound to make, and in just the right way (no simple picking for this guy), with no wasted effort. Amazing! Can't wait to see him again in October or November. I think the only element missing was Kelly (I think that's her name), who backed Happy for several shows about, what, 2-3 years ago? Though it sure sounded like there was a whole chorus of backup singers behind the stage or something.... The songs played were excellent. Thank you, thank you, thank you Happy for playing my second favorite song, Look for the Child! The recorded versions of the song never wow-ed me until I heard Happy play it live about 4-5 "tours" ago. It is a much more powerful song played live! Loved it! Other highlights for me were Proof, Serenading Genius, MWABT, Warpaint, the Roy dance-mix -- awe hell, everything was great! And the acoustic selections were a real treat (that *was* The Suicide Song, wasn't it?)! My only complaint was that there was only one different song in the second show. Oh well, I'm still thrilled to have seen both shows. Carl seemed to be having a lot more fun in the second show, letting loose with a mini-bass solo. I'll leave the setlists up to others with a better memory than I. There was a fella running around before the first show who said he was taping the show (audio only, I believe) for a possible net-cast. Their webpage is http://www.studiomlive.com/index.html in case you want to track whether & when the show will be aired. He mentioned that Happy needed to hear it and approve it first. Dinner at Serrano's did seem to be an effective way of getting choice seats this time. I and my dinner companions got a table right up in front next to Vickie, which is about as choice a location as you can get. The main drawback to the Tin Angel this time was the inadequacy of the air conditioning, which left those on stage "glistening," to use Happy's words. Bon Lozaga opened and established himself as quite a formidable guitarist. He started with a different piece off *Black Canvas* in each show (in one show it was "Black Canvas" and in the other "Tolerance, Acceptance, Transformation"), laying down layer upon layer--it was amazing to see it all coming from one person. As his second piece he did "an acoustic number" ("Rajah") which involved so many layers and so many odd pluckings, stretchings, scratchings, tweakings etc. that the description seemed vaguely ridiculous. For the next number, after Bon had laid down a few initial layers, Happy came out to do the vocals on "Mercy Street." Carl Adami (bass) and Bob Mueller (drums) then came on stage and Happy's part of the show officially started. I didn't get the set lists down in order, but basically she did everything off *Many Worlds Are Born Tonight* except "The Chariot" and "Looking over Cliffs." She did "Winter" only in the first show and "Tragic" only in the second show. Songs from other albums included: "Warpaint" (started both shows off) "Save Our Souls" "I Have a Heart" (1st show only) "Just Like Tivoli" "Ashes to Ashes" "Look for the Child" "I Have a Heart" and "Just Like Tivoli" were Happy solo on acoustic guitar; "Ashes to Ashes" featured Happy on acoustic and Bob Mueller on percussion. Happy wound up having to keep switching from standing up playing the acoustic guitar to sitting down to play the keyboard, and wished she had a "hovermike" like the hoverlamps in *Dune.* In general, the keyboards were limited to things like the backing chant for "Many Worlds are Born Tonight," or the choral backing vocals in "Tragic." Although Bon is a great guitarist, I felt a distinct lack of Kevin Bartlett. I guess I'll have to get used to it. Tom wrote: >Since I am sure you won't believe me if I tell you, I will just say that I >met Happy. And the shows were excellent. > >I will leave the details to others. OK, here are the details: He not only met Happy, she got him up on stage, handed him the mike, let him say whatever he wanted, and then told him he ruled. No kidding! What was happening: Early in the show, Happy mentioned that she would be bringing someone from up in the front row on stage. When the band members left the stage for Happy to do her acoustic numbers, she had to spend a little time tuning, so she got someone sitting in the front row to come up on stage and talk for a little while. In the first show, the person selected was named Gretchen; she came up on stage and wasn't sure what to talk about but managed OK--though she eventually gushed about Happy's terrific voice, range, etc. a bit to Happy's embarrassment. Tom got picked for the second show; he seemed very much at home up there on stage. However, when he looked around and said "Bon was right; there are a lot of cool toys up here," Happy sent him packing before he could touch anything. :-) He did get a cool HR mousepad for it. The lightstick thing seems on its way to becoming a tradition now; Vickie and I distributed lights to use just before the encore of each show. (Happy remarked that the stock of whatever company makes them was sure to start going up from here on out.) At the end of the second show, Happy and the band themselves pulled out their own lightsticks. The encore number for each show was "Serenading Genius." I'm probably forgetting many facts of significance, but that's all I have time for now. - --Paul P.S. Driving out of Philadelphia looking for a gas station we got caught in the most chaotic traffic mayhem I've ever been in, owing to whatever that event was that somebody mentioned on the list. Cars driving through downtown with people hanging out the car windows, or SUVs with their backs open and people sitting just inside; pedestrians wandering around amidst the traffic; cops on every street corner. We wound up in an amazing traffic jam when we tried to turn off in a direction we thought would get us away from the traffic. Groups of drunken people roamed the sidewalks. Bicycles rode through the traffic jam against the traffic. People abandoned their cars in the middle of the traffic jam and wandered from car to car. By the time the group on horseback (not cops) came through all the stopped cars, things had become completely surreal. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 00:49:19 -0500 From: jjh969@juno.com Subject: Happy @ the Tin Angel Yow, It was swell ! Started out rough though, the trip, not the show. 110 miles, 95 degrees, no A/C, Ra's Pissed ! Got there early, wrang out my shirt, threw on my fresh Ecto Tee created for the occasion. Bon Logazo arrived shortly after me, then came Ms. Vickie & Chis with Ecto-crew in tow. A few minutes after they left to grab some pre-show grub Ms Rhodes arrived. Ms Happy herself said "Cool Shirt" upon her arrival, I was very pleased and somewhat relieved being I pinched the MWBT promo flat back as a source. My dinner reservation at Serrano's wasn't till five so I gave a little help to Happy and her partners in crime loading in their equipment by way of a very narrow steep staircase off an alleyway at the rear of the venue. Serrano's was a bit pricey but the food wasn't bad. I went with the specials and chowed down on a nice fresh spicey gazpatcho, greens with a kiwi vinaigrette, and the Baja Bass over julienne veggies. Being first sitting, the baguette came straight from the oven, it came with a cruet of light fruity olive oil rather than ingots of bovine mamarial extrusion which is in line with my preference. On the side, veggie sticks with some sort of toothsome mystery unguent. Everything was done well and with some care, and after the long hot drive it hit the spot. Getting out of Serrano's before the crush was a good move and I snuck into the upstairs and found Cris setting up his video rig. I relinquished my primo seat to Ms Vickie, yes it does pay to get there early and lay down the long green, and set up my recorder next to Chris. He was right near the board, which normally is the place to be sonicly. I will not try describe too much what we were treated to, the look on Paul Blair's face at the end of the night said it all. Ms. Rhodes chided us all for not watching enough cartoons, well, Paul looked like Wylie Cyotee picking his teeth with a charred Road-Runner Bone. Bon Logazo gained a new fan last night, I picked up the Project Lo disc and couple of his others as well. When Happy joined Bon on the stage for Peter Gabriel's Mercy Street it was magical. I enjoyed it more than the Black Canvas version. The stripped down Happy show really appeals to me, no videos, lights. They are very cool but totally not necessary. It was drums, bass, guitars and keyboard, and Happy, who was in fine voice. She did bring a effects rack for loops, harmony and effects, but used it sparingly enough that it was unobtrusive. Getting to see the sound check was a treat, seeing George the sound guy ripping his hair out ferreting out a dicey ground brought to mind all too familiar memories. There was a guy there from a company called Mobius New Media out of Wilmington Delaware, taping for some possible down the road broadcast, I think he said it was for the net. I was a bit preoccupied when we spoke, so I'll need to type at him to see what was up with that. I look forward to the views of others in attendance. It was an incredible show.
