Just heard _Argo_, and now spinning _Alexandria_ ("Fortress"). Plus, she is a _geniune_ storyteller (for real - she was invited by the Storytelling Guild of Australia to appear with Diane Wolkstein during Diana's 1995-96 Aussie tour, if I remember right; she sang her "Inanna" song and Diane told her own version of the Sumerian epic). Some extra information on Louisa's CDs, which arrived by airmail today thanks to an Aussie friend: _Argo_ was first issued on Evolving Discs in Victoria (EV0010) in 1996; _Alexandria_ was self-published last year (and with a different cover than the one that graces the Hyperium issue). Only _Alexandria_ had lyrics, and then only for the title song. I have no idea if the Hyperium pressings offer full lryics on everything. Do expect to play both CDs a lot. I really must keep up with my ectomail. I missed meth's question about Sarah Slean's CD a couple of weeks back. Meth wondered: >According to Sarah Slean's web site, her album has been pushed back to >"August 1999". Anyone have a more specific date? Yes! Sarah has just finished remastering it and it's off to the manufacturer now. Barring any problems, she'll start sending it out copies to people who pre-order it within the next couple of weeks. I got a CDR of it from her on Tuesday so I can put up a new full-length MP3 track on the website. The track is called "High" and it's a great one! We're aiming to have the MP3, new merch, and the new CD artwork up on the website by the end of Monday, and people can start pre-ordering the CD then. I'd like to say a couple of words about the album, but first I should point out that because I'm Sarah's webmaster now, I'm not exactly an impartial observer... -BUT- I'm sure this album would be a strong contender for album of the year for me, web guy or no web guy. Here's the track listing for _Blue Parade_: Playing Cards With Judas Bonnie's Song My Invitation Before Your Time Habit Twin Moon Awake Soon High Eliot Blue Parade Narcolepsy Weed + a hidden track (featuring a special surprise guest) When a songwriter as prolific as Sarah waits for 2 years to put out an album, there are inevitably disappointing omissions. Some of her older songs that probably would have appeared on the album had it been released earlier are missed. In fact, "Playing Cards With Judas" is probably the only song from the _Universe_ cassette release-era days to survive to this songlist. But with this album, after a few listens, it was hard to find songs to bump in favour of the ones I wanted. There's probably a good reason for that... Sarah has developed so much as both a songwriter and a performer since the _Universe_ days, it's a little scary... There's a good mix of songs, from gorgeous ballads like "Twin Moon" and "Blue Parade" to more uptempo songs like "Playing Cards with Judas" and "High". "Awake Soon" is a capella choral piece in the tradition of "Pie Jesu". There's the Cohen-esque "Eliot", and explorations of different sounds, effects and instrumentation in "My Invitation" (piano and horns), "Habit" (electric guitars), "Eliot" (accordion, horns, glock), and "Narcolepsy Weed" (funky keyboard setting). Unlike most CDs, my favourite tracks are near the end. "Eliot" has an old-time, Leonard Cohen feel that I just can't get enough of. I can also hear a touch of Rufus Wainwright in this one (she's a big fan of Rufus). "Blue Parade" is the very next song and this is one of the most emotionally moving and achingly beautiful songs I've ever heard. The first time I heard the recorded version was last week at a listening party, and this song was causing all sorts of visceral reactions, the tears, the shivers, the hairs on end, the goosebumps. It was all I could do from crying out for someone to pause the CD player after the song ended to give me some time to decompress after the song. And all the songs keep getting better and better with each listen. This is an unbelievable album. Anyway I'll let you guys know once the new soundbite and pre-order forms and so on are posted on the website ( http://www.sarahslean.com ). *whew* ... guess that was a bit more than what you asked for, meth! Sorry I missed your post earlier. I only discovered it because I was going through missed digests looking for posts about an upcoming album by some other piano girl... When I picked up Sarah's album, she was sitting on her porch listening to a voice very familiar to me singing unfamiliar songs. Could it be...? "This is the new Tori", she said. I was stunned. I hadn't even known Tori was coming out with a new album (I missed woj's post about it). I looked at the CD, and it was a pre-master of the upcoming CD, titled "Selections from the upcoming album _To Venus and Back_" (not sure about that album title). Selections perhaps, but there was a full album's worth of songs on there. And Sarah had it. Guess there are some perks to being a label-mate of Tori's! Anyway I didn't hear nearly enough of the album to form much more than a wispy impression of it... it was pretty cool and poppy sounding but I'm not sure I'm going to like it as much as CH. Sarah said something about missing "the songs"... Anyway I'm still excited about it. I'll have to come up with some excuse to go back to listen to more of it... :-) I really must learn to keep up with the digests so I know about this stuff! I've been a fan for years as well, but was horribly, intensely disappointed with "Spirit" and now I almost hate her (she made us wait four years for _this_?!?) I'm holding out for the day when I can hear tracks like "Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone" and "Carnivore" on CD. I read in an interview that her next album is going to be a 'rock' album, so it's a possibility.
