She has a crystalline voice, and the music dipps into middle-eastern territory. LJK is also a professional storyteller, and this aspect comes out in her lyrics, which are fanciful and fairy-tale-ish. Plus, she's a multi-instrumentalist. It's perfect music for dreaming. Very much in the Lisa Gerrard/Kate Bush/ Loreena McKennit vein. It has a weird oily ring on the booklet where the perimeter of the CD would be and spots all over the tray card -- this before I've even opened the shrink wrap. This is my second order from Amazon, and I've had damaged items in both (books that appear to have been dropped on a corner, etc.), despite the impressively anal nature of their packaging. Is this typical of Amazon? (I've had far better luck with CDnow.) Perhaps I'd be better off going straight to the Cowboy Junkies for their CD? I dunno how many packages I've had from Amazon (I would guess at least 8-10 since they went online) and overall they've been pretty good. I've had one occasion in which they placed a large-format softcover on top of a small book so it ended up with a crease, but not so bad that I complained. My father recently received a damaged book from Amazon. Their response, upon receiving his e-mail complaint was wonderful -- they immediately submitted a shipment for a replacement book and then sent him a package so he could return the damaged copy...didn't ask for a deposit, didn't wait 'til they received the damaged book, etc. I've never actually ordered a CD from Amazon, but I've certainly ordered a ton of 'em online from other vendors. It seems like a total crap shoot as to what condition they will arrive in...I've had well-packed jewel cases with cracks or broken teeth, and shoddily packed CDs that were in prisitine condition upon arrival. The most amusing of these incidents was an order from CD Baby. Those of you familiar with Derek and his operation know that he sends out rather humorous e-mail about the care with which your purchase is wrapped, taken to the post office, and mailed. Of course, I ended up with a broken case anyway... ;-) jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 10:39:38 -0500 (CDT) From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Re: Cowboy Junkies and Amazon.com On Wed, 21 Jul 1999, Greg Jumper wrote: > Hi, > > I just received a copy of the Cowboy Junkies' Rarities, B-Sides and > Slow, Sad Waltzes from Amazon.com. I have been using AMAZON.COM for both books and CDs since the end of last year and am impressed with their service to the UK. If CDs take longer than 9 days then they are late ! I have never had any complaint about their packaging, etc. Looking at the Junkies CD, it looks as if the "ring" is part of the cover's design ..... maybe to give the CD a real "oldie" and "rare" appearance. Not only, Greg, is Carolyn apparently correct about the faux-distressed look of the CD package, judging from the small scan at the website, but, in answer to your other question--should you just get the disc directly from the Cowboy Junkies--guess where a click on "buy this album now" at cowboyjunkies.com takes you? Their own "official" website was opened June 1 of this year - and the ecommerce portion isn't scheduled to open till August 1. Presumably they released "B-sides..." to coincide with their summer touring season -- and feature it as 'exclusive' to sales at their gigs & website. But with the less than perfect timing of the website redesign, must have opted to use the amazom.com affiliate type program to get it out for web purchase. I seem to remember on the CJ mailing list that the album would only be available at amazon.com for a limited time -- so it'll be interesting to see if the 'buy this CD' button shifts to the CJwebsite store on August 1 -- and evaporates from amazon.com! The reason for this, as stated elsewhere at cowboyjunkies.com, is because they don't have the "store" portion of their web site ready yet. Amazon is handling the distribution and sale of this b-sides disc until cowboyjunkies.com is ready with their secure server, at which point presumably amazon will cease sale of the disc. The label "exclusive" does still apply, since amazon.com is the only place you can get the disc outside of going to a live show. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jul 1999 17:25:55 -0400 From: meredith Subject: FW: VCR Alert -The Nields on TV Hi! As stated , people with dinner reservations at Serrano get reserved seating at Tin Angel. The order that reservations are made in is the primary consideration in determining seating at Tin Angel. But timeliness for the dinner reservation, as well as size of party does enter into the equation. Eating quckly to be first in line DOES NOT affect seating. 3. 7/24 is the date of the annual Greek Picnic here in Philadelphia. The Greek Picnic is a yearly convention of Black Fraternities and Sororities. Traditionally the Greek Picnic causes traffic snarls, road closings and driving headaches. Patrons coming to Tin Angel are advised to allow extra time to deal with these problems. I have tried to get exact information from the Philadelphia Police on how to best advise people but, as of yet, have been unsuccesful. These warnings should be particularly directed at those attending the 1030 show that night. In any case, avoid the South St area (1/2 mile south of Tin Angel) and consult the Philadelphia Inquirer on 7/23 and 7/24.
