Now I'm really even more excited about this fall, because I've booked her for the coffeehouse I book for (http://www.msu.edu/~cgrounds). In fact, I have a number of ecto-ish, including Brenda Kahn (Oct. 9), Maggie Estep (Oct. 16), Beau Sia (also Oct. 16, and in this case I'm reaching, but he did have that Jewel poetry book parody), Joy Eden Harrison (Sept. 25), Jolie Christine Rickman (Nov. 6), Pepper (Acton) McGowan (Nov. 19), Holly Figeuroa (Oct. 18), and the Indiegrrl Tour (Sept. 18) plus some excellent local ecto-ish artists, like Lori Amey, Half Looking, and Jill Jack. The full schedule is at http://www.msu.edu/~cgrounds/fall99.htm, and I expect to see any ecto listers in or visiting the Michigan area to stop by sometime for a great, cheap concert sometime. I know she married Paul Simon and has possibly popped out a few kids, but she hasn't had an album out in a number of years. Last I heard, she was performing some shows with the New Bohemians under the new name "The Slip". But I haven't heard anything since. She wasn't one of my all-time favorites or anything, but I distinctly recall the first time I saw the "What I Am" video. I was in the sixth grade, and this crazy, hippie, Janis Joplin-like woman was singing this very unusual song on MTV. That song is truly one of the weirdest hit songs ever. _Shooting Rubberbands At Stars_ was a nice CD as well, _Ghost of a Dog_ was even better. I had some problems with her solo effort, _Picture Perfect Morning_, but that's mainly because she screwed up its best song (the laid back, catchy "Good Times") with a horribly spoken word guest appearance by Barry White. Everytime I listen to that song now, I just cringe waiting for him to appear. Now, back on the subject... anyone have any info on her current doings? np: Holly McNarland, _Stuff_ (and not liking it too much, either) - -- Mark Miazga e-mail: miazgama@pilot.msu.edu 302 Mason Hall, MSU East Lansing, MI 48825 (517) 355-2106 http://www.msu.edu/~miazgama Voicemail: (517) 355-9380 Program Coordinator of The Common Grounds Coffeehouse. I stopped what I was doing, sat and listened and was struck, for the very first time, by the gorgeous bass line in that song. I checked the credits (I'm terrible at reading liner notes) and discovered that it was our own Kevin Bartlett playing the bass. As a former bass player myself, I was pleased to hear such a wonderful part being played. It has always added so much to the song, but this was the first time I actually noticed it overtly. Anyway, beautifully done, Kevin! I find that's one of the problems listening to most of my music at work and in the car. The boom box and car stereo are not the best venues, sonically, for me to listen. Still, the chances to listen uninterrupted on the "good" stereo system at home are few and far between, so I take it when I can get it. Still, it allows me to be surprised by something months after its release. On a totally unrelated noted, I'm TOTALLY grooving on the new Cibo Matto and Gus Gus albums. And I've also recently picked up Rachael Sage, the new Moby and My Scarlet Life's "Buzzbomb" all of which are terrific! Okay, enough rambling... Well, seeing that name in the topic list was a bit of a surprise... Rebecca is originally from Australia.. transplanted to the US in her early teens if I remember correctly.. recorded her first CD when she was 13-14. She's probably one of the most talented CCM artist, I guess stylistically Alanis is a pretty good comparison, although her Aussie accent gives her a rather unique sound. This is definitely Christian music.. no subtle messages like Sixpence or Jars of Clay here.... she's very vocal about it... But if that sort of stuff bothers you, you may still want to check out her Christmas album... a very good choice if you want something a little different next holiday season. Last year I made Christmas compilation CDs for gifts that started with Happy's version of 'Oh, Holy Night' and ended with Rebecca's version, quite a contrast between the two.. There's also a cover of Lennon's 'Happy Christmas'. It's one thing to hear a group that's as accomplished at Grey Eye Glances, but it doubles the pleasure to watch a band that having a wonderful time performing, too. When a group enjoys being on stage, then that pleasure magically enhances the music. You can tell that this is a band that enjoys each others company and is synched well, and that spills over into the music. A couple of times various band members missed their cues to start playing, and the other band members took the mistakes with humor and a shrug. (The blame for the missed cues rests entirely with the sun -- Grey Eye Glances was playing on an outdoor stage, looking directly into the setting July sun. If the sunlight was painful, and it must have been, they didn't show it. The band wore nice sunglasses, though.) Grey Eye Glances is best described as a folk-rock, alternative pop group with occasional dashes of Celtic or country now and then, like you might add seasoning to a gourmet meal. Although the audience consisted mostly of people from the town of Herndon - --they came with picnic baskets, blankets, and small children who danced to the music-- you could tell from the way some in the audience mouthed the words of some songs that there were at least a few GEG fans in the crowd. Grey Eye Glances performed songs from their various albums, including Eventide, and Painted Pictures. Lead singer, Jennifer Nobel's voice was as lovely and pure live as it is on their CDs. She has a great range, and can hold high notes like few others. Nobel touched a lot of hearts in Herndon when she sang "Angel." Her voice, though unique, reminds me a little of Annie Haslam (Renaissance) and Mary Fahl (October Project.) All three of these singers have lush, crystal voices. I especially liked that GEG performed their songs differently than on the CD -- the band is innovative. GEG also played, joked and jammed around a bit on stage. GEG final song of the concert was one of my favorites, "Halfway Back" -- they performed three different renditions of Halfway Back. On the Eventide CD Halfway Back starts with an upbeat tempo; when GEG played it on stage, they started Halfway Back slowly, making it sound like liquid poetry. Guitarist Brett Kull took to the banjo for one song -- a pleasant treat. Grey Eye Glances played two songs, "Moonlight" and "Big Red Boat," from a forthcoming CD -- something to definitely look forward to. Is it too late to order a copy? 2) The Jane Siberry compilation Kay Cleaves put together sounds really cool, (and I'll be sending you, Kay, a cd to burn it on as soon as I remember to go buy one) and I was wondering (I know it's horrible to ask someone to do all this work) if anyone would be interested in doing a similar thing for Tori rarities. I'm really excited to hear new Tori songs (a la the 2-cd set due fall) but disappointed that she won't be releasing a rarities disc like previously announced. Unless she is planning on releasing such a disc separately? Anyone know anything about that? Anyway, there are all these great songs out there like "Black Swan" which is one of my favorites to play on the piano, from The Bee Sides collection, that I don't have recordings of. If I had money to track these songs down, from rare b-sides and soundtracks and whatnot I would, and if I had a cd burner I would make my own disc, and if my computer could play RealAudio or mp3's, I would listen to the songs that way, but alas I can't. I would pay someone to make such a disc, and perhaps there are other fans who would like such a disc too. I'm babbling. Anyway, if this sounds interesting to anyone, I know it would mean someone else doing the work, but maybe we could work something out, or if people could suggest another way to go about getting some of these songs... well, you get the point. Anyway... just wanted to add my 2 cents in: I love Jane's _Child_ and other ectophilic Xmas albums I like are the compilations _Winter, Fire & Snow_ and Putomayo's Xmas collection which feature musicians from around the world, and Mary Margaret O'Hara's _Christmas EP_. I almost posted about Rose last night and wanted to be the first to announce that she was releasing a new album (although I didn't know it was out yet). She played an intimate solo concert at my college (Oberlin) this past spring, and it was the first time I ever heard of her, but she was really good and really nice. After the show a bunch of people hung out and took turns playing songs on guitar and stuff, and I played "Galileo" on my mandolin and everyone sang along, and I'd only been playing for 2 weeks, so that was really cool, and this is a run-on sentence that I should wrap up soon. Ah! There! Anyway, I look forward to hearing this new album, and I do recommend seeing her live. Hmm... what else? lost my train of thought. oh well. oh yes, i was going to do a Guide entry for her a while ago, and the recent discussion has re-inspired me, so unless someone is already working on one, I will go ahead and put one together, and please let me know if it's okay to use the recent comments or not. Unfortunately I don't have a burner but I can make tapes if you or anyone else is interested. No, Tori's new double CD album in the fall called "to venus and back" will be 1 live disc from the Plugged tour and 1 disc with whole new material. I believe a single is coming out from the new material on aug 6th. What I haven't seen mentioned, and what you might be unaware of if you've just joined the list, is that Happy is playing in Philly on the 24th. So if that fits into your time frame for being out here, you might be able to make it to that. I'm still getting settled in here (I just moved back to Baltimore and have been in my apartment for 1 week now), so I don't really have all the concert listing at my fingertips like I usually do.
