I've been on about a month and have indeed been turned on to a lot of new artists. My name is Mark, and I live in Italy. I look forward to the posts and hope to begin some interesting correspondence. As far as music, if this is protocol, my real interests are first and foremost Kate Bush, and through sites relating to her, kept reading about a "Happy Rhodes". I have searched music stores for years (before on-line stores) and always came up empty. Finally I found "Many Worlds are Born Tonight" and sampled off of Amazon and was immediately taken aback by her angelic voice, and yes, quite similar to Kate's. Of course, I ordered it (all the other discs were and are out of stock). I couldn't believe when it came in I finally had my hands on this person. Admittedly, at first I was kind of disappointed with all of the electronica and that her voice wasn't always Kate's. But the more I listened to it-to this day even, I continue to be amazed with what a creative, talented, musical and lyrical genius she is, and such a beautiful voice that is all her own. Of course while wishing her success, I can only hope that she continues to produce music that so obviously is her own creation and not influenced by major label mass production (as was pointed out with Joan). Don't know if that's clear, but I'm inspired that there artists such as her at work and feel that this newsgroup has it's finger on the pulse of that vein of music. Sure would be nice to be in Philly 'bout now... Sorry it was such a long introduction, nice to meet you all. Looking at her website, http://rsjames.com/ , I discover she's a pretty high profile CCR artist, but those who either don't mind her religiosity or can ignore it (as well as, of course, those who might find it a plus) might really like her. The track reminded me a bit of the title track of MWABT, or perhaps Martin Page. Other stuff, on quick RealAudio sampling, are somewhat Alanis-like. I still don't feel I've listened to it enough to evaluate it fairly, but I must say I really like it so far. The second song, especially, makes me think that this is the album Kate Bush would have made during Tthe Dreaming sessions if she had a garage band backing her up rather than a Fairlight. When Kristeen yells "Go to Bed" it sounds so much like Dreaming-era Kate it's uncanny. Of course, she doesn't sound like Kate all the time. Her voice is pretty much all over the map. I can see the Lene Lovich comparisons, although I always associate a very clean "pop" sound with Lene, with the vocals always dominant in the mix. Kristeen's vocals tend to be much lower in the mix, making you want to play it really loud (not necessarily a bad thing as the music kind of demands it anyway). The music is good, but fairly rudimentary--no lavish string arrangements, world music influences, etc. If anything, the music tends to be "cluttered", particulary with percussion--something I find a lot of musicians falling prey to when the songs lack strong melody. The overall sound is rough and gives a feeling of very loose production with a punk sensibility. The styles differ pretty dramatically throughout the course of the album, though all of the songs are more on the noisy side. No "pretty" ballads on this one. Overall, I'd definitely say it's a winner. I need to sit down and listen to it with the lyrics in hand sometime, and once I do, I have a feeling I'll really grow to love it. I think most ectophiles who appreciate a little angst and eccentricity in their music will really like it. Jeff Hanson n.p. Kristeen Young - Enemy n.r. I'm gonna lose count of the number of times I've fallen down laughing! This other woman, Summer Pierre, is apparently a friend of Rose's who lives in this area and doesn't tour, so they don't usually do shows together, but they're having a lot of fun with this one. When I was flipping the tapes, they broke into a spontaneous "flip tape, flip tape, everybody's gotta flip tape sometime..." song. Then a few minutes later they said, "we've got a caller!" and simulated this woman "Flora" who they interviewed about her love problems. Right now I'm listening to them simulate static, since they're theoretically off the air 'cause Flora came down to the studio to get them back for what they said about her on the air. And now they're interviewing the (invented) security guy they called to get rid of Flora. I find myself comparing them to moxy fruvous. Yeep. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- They told me afterwards that this was the first time the two of them had performed together, incidentally. I saw Rose several more times in the next few months. At the Newport Folk Festival, at which Rose and the Indigo Girls performed, IG invited Rose on stage with them during their set. I think this festival was where they first heard her, actually. It was also where Trina Hamlin first met Rose - I'd been telling her (Trina) about her (Rose) ever since the WBRS show. meth saw Rose Polenzani open for Susan McKeown on July 12th and had this to say: > I've heard quite a bit about Rose Polenzani in the past couple months, > both here and on the Nields list, but I'd never heard a note of her > music before today. She seemed to be existing on a planet > entirely her own, but that might just have been a function of the > elimination of the distance between audience and performer when > there's no amplification and you're all sitting in a really small > room. Actually, Rose definitely does seem to have her own planet, and to the extent that she lets you into it during her between songs banter, it can make for a surreal show. Which is one of the things I love about her. At a concert at Somerville Theatre (hundreds of people in the audience), for example, she told us all about her exhibitionism and being seen naked by strangers through windows at home, and also about wandering her neighborhood looking through other peoples' windows to see what she could see... And that Flora bit from the WBRS show was priceless (fortunately I have that one on tape!). If you have a taste for the bizarre, and like good female singer/songwriters, go to a bunch of Rose Polenzani shows :) Regarding the Edie Brickell similarity meth mentioned... A friend of mine, Betsy, was at Rose & Summer's WBRS show. At one point Rose noted that Betsy looked like Edie Brickell (she does look like a much younger Edie Brickell, though I hadn't thought of it before) and when she discovered that Betsy had never heard Edie Brickell's music, she and Summer decided to do a cover. To Summer's "which song do you want to do?", Rose answered "I only do songs from the Ghost of a Dog album" They then went through all the names of the songs on the album until the picked the one they both wanted to do, and sang that one. I forget which one it was. However, based on the fact that Rose apparently knows by heart, without having even thought to prepare, every song from one of Edie Brickell's lesser known albums (that being anything that isn't "Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars" :), was prepared to perform any of them, and did the one they chose perfectly, I conclude that Edie Brickell is definitely one of her primary influences and favorite artists :) Incidentally, Rose has been managed for I think a little more than a year by Gabe Unger, the same guy who started managing Jess Klein at about the same time. He's ultra-enthusiastc and hyper-energetic and has done an awful lot to push both of them, nationally. Jess Klein, who I don't like nearly as much as Rose, is Boston based and had been performing locally for a while, and it's quite clear she got a real boost, especially as far as recognition outside of Boston, when she started working with Gabe. I'd never heard of Rose before Gabe picked her up, because she was from Chicago. -- Cos (Ofer Inbar) -- cos@polyamory.org cos@leftbank.com -- WBRS (100.1 FM) -- info@wbrs.org http://www.wbrs.org/ "They say I should not question why / God must have a plan But sheep dogs falling from the sky / I do not undersand" -- Andy Breckman, the Wedding Song ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #238 **************************
