Kim, what's your equipment?) Dirk, Billi and I are definitely looking forward to receiving our copy of Ectopia. I am very anxious to hear your contribution along with every other contributor to Ectopia. Billi and I have been checking our mailbox each evening. :-) Nothing yet. I also need to get on the ball and order several additional copies from Fog. I have exchanged several correspondences with Fog about the compilation over the last few months. I know that he originally wanted to create a more extensive booklet that included detailed information about the contributors. I believe that there were some circumstances that made it best for Fog to keep the booklet simple. It is very nice to hear that the booklet turned out so well. I believe that Fog was going to and no doubt did include the URL for each Ectopia contributor. Any Ectophile that would like to find out more about Katheleen Michaels, such as biographical info and lyrics, can visit her web site (which is on the Ecto Web Ring). You asked about motivation for choosing the songs that we contributed to Ectopia. Katheleen and I discussed which songs we both would like to contribute to the compilation. Together we chose the songs that are some of our favorites from the disc and that we hoped might most appeal to Ectophiles. We also chose the songs that best represented our collaboration together. Katheleen has been through many difficult experiences and circumstances in her life. She has grown into a stronger, more loving and spiritual person because of these struggles. I believe that her lyrics and our music reflect that very well. Some of her songs are autobiographical and some are third person narrative. I believe that those listening to her songs on Ectopia will definitely understand what she has to say through the music. I again would like to thank Fog for his tireless efforts in putting Ectopia together for all of us to enjoy. Thank you Fog!!! Obviously I haven't seen Cyoakha's work on Ectopia yet. I do believe that she has done some beautiful artwork on the LofB discs. So I will thank her in advance for her artistic contributions to Ectopia.. Fine, whatever. I wrote this response 2 nights ago and thought I sent it to the list. By accident, it stayed in my out box and didn't get sent. Since I wrote this, many more people have weighed in with their thoughts. These are my thoughts, though they're a bit dated and don't answer anyone else's posts. - --------------- I'm not surprised at the immediate and warm support meth is getting in response to Charley's post. We support meth because we know her. She's a long-time, well-loved, very valuable Ectophile and we care about her. That's a given. Unfortunately, Charley's views have made him the bad guy now, but frankly, I agree with some of his points about someone using "Ecto"-fest without any input from the members of the list. Why? Not because anyone would have had a problem with the Ectofest itself, or meth using the name Ectofest. I can't imagine anyone would have objected. Charley himself said that the Danbury Ectofest is worthy of support and I wholeheartedly agree. The problem is the precedent that it sets. ("it" being not allowing the list to have input, only in regards to the name) What if a lurker no one knows decided to put on an "Ectofest" where the benefits were being given to one or two organizations that many of us would have problems with? I personally have no problems with the Interfaith AIDS Ministry (even though I'm a hard core atheist) and Danbury Women's Center, but I'd have real problems if someone else were to have an "Ectofest" and give the benefits to an anti-abortion clinic, or an organization that espoused racism, bigotry and hate (World Church of the Creator anyone? Sounds harmless, doesn't it?), or to raise money for a Republican politician, or to raise money for $cientology/Moonies/ or any number of whatevers. Think about it. Is it a remote possibility? Probably, but why take the chance? Why automatically condemn Charley for his views just because it's meth who's putting it on? What if it *weren't* meth? And what if Happy *weren't* involved? And what if the name were being used in a negative way? The situation would be a bit more complex then, wouldn't it? If it's automatically *OK* to call any public musical gathering/benefit "Ectofest" without getting the list's input, then anything goes for anyone to do anything with the name without getting the list's input. And that could be (not "would be" but could be) bad. This shouldn't be a "meth vs. Charley" war with people taking sides, because we all only want what's good for the list, and the list's name. I hail and applaud meth and Chuck for putting Ectofest99 together. It's going to be wonderful for all involved. However, I agree with Joe and would like to see some sort of consensus that, from now on, if an Ectophile plans a public show and they want to call it Ectofest or Ectoanythingelse, that they please tell the list about it and open it up to discussion. (This, of course, wouldn't apply to private gatherings of Ectophiles...Ectoparties.) One last thought...this list was named after Happy's song and album, but the name has become so identified with this list, and we all know that this list encompasses far more than one Happy song and album, that I don't think it's correct to say that what Happy thinks is all that matters, not what the list members think. If the name were to be used in a negative fashion by someone in the future, it would affect this list just as much as it would Happy herself. - ------------------------- In real time again...so those were my thoughts the other night, and since then I've realized...hey, who cares? No one else, apparently, so why should I worry about something that might never happen? Ecto...it's just a word, after all. Therefore my perception was that it was just another swipe at Chuck and Meredith, so that's how I treated it. If we want to have a discussion of this topic that is completely separate from any issues surrounding the upcoming Ectofest (which those who have stated an opinion seem to all agree is a perfectly reasonable use of the ecto name) then we can do that. I'll begin by stating clearly that I do not object to the idea of discussing the uses of the term "ecto" (this is a discussion list after all), I just object to it being some sort of requirement. Vickie wrote: >The problem is the precedent that it sets. Sounds harmless, doesn't it?), or to raise >money for a Republican politician, or to raise money for >$cientology/Moonies/ or any number of whatevers. You're right, someone could for some odd reason choose to use the ecto name to raise money for some extremist group (and it isn't my intent to include Republicans in that description). Why someone might choose to do that is hard to understand, since I don't see what kind of drawing power the ecto name would have in such circles or which of our favorite ecto artists would perform at such an event, but let's assume for the sake of discussion that for reasons of their own someone wanted to use the name. Do you honestly think that someone who would want to do that would then change their mind because people on the list objected? This is probably my main objection to the idea that we require that the usage of ecto be discussed. I don't think that anyone who wanted to use the term for something that supported some extreme cause, or just someone who wanted to use it for something fraudulent, would care about the discussion anyway, so I hardly see how it would in any way help prevent such scenarios from occurring. Then there is another problem to consider and that's the diversity of the ecto community. It's easy to assume that we are all some variety of free-thinking, open-minded people with generally the same political beliefs, but I really doubt that's true. How many people would have to object to a particular use of the ecto name before we assumed that we as a community objected? Would it matter whether or not those objecting were long time members of the list? Would people who weren't well-known members of ecto feel intimidated by the idea of expressing their objections if there seemed to be general approval by the list regulars? Basically I think that the idea of requiring discussions about the use of the term "ecto" is something that might appear like a good idea in theory, but would be both ineffectual and divisive in practice.
