Music is an artform that the listener can form their identities around. The lyrics and music can carry deep meaning for the listener. Many times, music is a form that can express and capture the immediacy of someone's hurt, emotion, angst, pensiveness, among many moods. There are sub-cultures formed around, with, or inclusive of the music people listen to. For example, I'd say that some of the people who listen to Indy music a la Sleater-Kinney are not only listening to S-K because they are the greatest band in the world, but because of the political position S-K is taking by _not_ going with a major record label and staying on Kill Rock Stars. Same with Ani Difranco and many other Indy artists. Another example would be the recent decrying among many Tori Amos fans (at least the ones I know) about her touring with Alanis M. Not that Alanis makes bad music or whatever, but she is mainstream, played on the radio a million times during the day (remember "You Oughtta Know"?), and a lot of people like her. She's popular, and maybe popularity stands for something that these Toriphiles dislike immensely. One more example. After Kurt Cobain's amazing success with "Nevermind" he was plenty worried about the kind of people his music was attracting. Why would he worry about that? Wouldn't he _want_ more more more people to listen to his music? Well, the thing is his songs that were about disenfranchisement among the youth lets say was attracting the very same bullies who beat him up during his teen years that caused him to feel such angst which inspired the songs. And so with his second album "In Utero" Kurt purposely tried to make this album more punk, less accessible. Just goes to show that the music makers are in on it too. Of course, Courtney is another story altogether.... You know, its funny because I know people who are _SO_ fucking protective about the music they listen to. Like they won't even tell you what's in their CD /Vinyl Collection because they want their music to remain their little secret. It's how they identify themselves. And they'd freak out if their antithesis liked the same music they do. God forbid! And then there are the people who will listen to _only_ Indy music. No major labels for them, and in the process maybe they are depriving themselves of some really great music. Its really sad, lame, and funny at the same time because these people have no sense of humour and take things ways too seriously. Of course on the flip side, you gotta admire the militant political stance they are taking and applying to _all_ aspects of their lives: "personal is political" after all. I don't know what's wrong that we have to define the "in" group by who's "out." Identity defined by exclusion is how I read this, and how I read one of the many sad themes of American history, and that could be another story (Ronald Takaki does a good job in "A Different Mirror). np PJ Harvey "Rid Of Me" Shirley Ye Berkeley, California shye@uclink4.berkeley.edu I am not an angry girl, but it seems like I've got everyone fooled. Now if only she could get it on tape. After a bad recording session in New York, Deal's band quit. "I didn't use any of it," says Deal from Chicago, holed up at Albini's Electrical Audio Recording Studio (EARS). "Now these songs are like three years old." With the lineup changing for every record, Deal was often the only mainstay -- now she's the only band member. This isn't stopping her from making the record she's been trying to make for three years, though. Starting from scratch with Albini, who worked on the first Pixies (Deal's previous band) and Breeders records, as well as Nirvana's In Utero, she spent the last year teaching herself drums, and is playing all the bass and guitar parts. "Kelley [Deal's twin sister] is going to be a part of this, but at this point, it's just me." Deal is also considering former Slint drummer Britt Walford, who appeared under pseudonyms on previous Breeders projects. "I think it will be easier to play it the way I want it and record it," she says. "When it's time to play live, I can just say, 'Here, this is what it is.' That's easier than someone trying to imagine what I'm talking about and trying to work it out." Deal realizes it's a strange way to record an album, and says, "It's not like it's a great thing to do it this way, but I want to get this record done, and until I find the kind of drummer I'm looking for, I'll do it like this." Albini, who just finished recording with his own band Shellac, is famous for his no-fuss approach to recording. "Steve's a really great traditional engineer. He gives the music real depth and warmth, plus I know he'll never turn digital on me," says Deal. "He doesn't take any of the easy band-aid ways to record; he makes sure he has the right everything." In anticipation of criticism that she is a perfectionist, Deal stresses, "I'm not trying to be picky or difficult, but it's important to me that these songs be done right, and now I'm in a place where I can do that." The album, as yet untitled, is due out in early 2000. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 15:07:42 -0400 From: meredith Subject: ectofest info: travel and lodging Hi! Re a chance for ectophiles to get together around ectofest: Chuck is working on getting together a post-fest party for all ectophiles in attendance. Stay tuned for the details. I've also been asked by several folk to forward information on airports and lodging for people who might come from out of town to attend ectofest. The closest airports are Bradley Internaational in Hartford, or Westchester County airport in White Plains, NY. However, you'll probably get much cheaper fares flying straight into LaGuardia or Newark. Connecticut Limo is a local shuttle service that services all the above airports direct to Danbury. It's possible that flying into LGA and paying the limo fare (somewhere around $65 round trip) will be cheaper than flying into a closer airport. As for lodging, most of the major chains have big hotels in Danbury, not far from the festival site. (Chuck, do you have more details on which are the best places to stay?) If someone wants to do the ectosuite thing, go for it ... also, depending on how many people are coming from what direction, there will be limited crash space at the House Of SMOE in New Haven as well. We can work out the details of that later. And if you're planning on taking the train, Amtrak goes to Stamford, and from there you can catch Metro-North to Danbury. Coming from New York City, you can just take Metro-North all the way, changing trains in Stamford. We will be providing transportation from the train station to the festival site (right, Chuck? :). I'll be posting all of this information, with the appropriate web links to ectofest.org soon. I had some great news this week that I wanted to share with ya... R.E.M. has asked me to sit in with them on September 4th at Jones Beach. How kool is that? This Friday, I'll be playing the part of Ms. Leslie Gore at the BOTTOM LINE as part of THE BEAT GOES ON VOL. 4 presents "HULLABALOO"! Beginning in January of 1965 every Monday night millions of viewers tuned their televisions sets to NBC to watch the most innovative music program of the decade. Hullabaloo showcased the best pop, jazz and soul acts of the day on a wide variety of cool stage sets all backed by the Hullabaloo dancers and the Peter Matz Orchestra. Each episode featured a different host (a concept later used by Saturday Night Live) and covered a musical spectrum which consisted of the Rolling Stones, The Supremes, Kinks, Byrds, Paul Revere and The Raiders, Shangra Las and many many more. The Beat Goes On will reenact this concept on the stage at the Bottom Line on Friday, July 16 with shows at 7:30 and 10:30. Hosted by Richard Barone the show will feature artists including the legendary Billy J. Kramer, Vicki Peterson, Susan Cowsill, Richard Lloyd, Steve Wynn, Amy Rigby, Gary Lucas, Patti Rothberg, Tony Visconti, Carlton Smith, The Pristeens, Freedy Johnston, Joy Askew, Greenrooftops, Richard X. Heyman, George Usher, Michael Bacon, Joe Hurley, DENI BONET and many more. The all-star house band is led by music director Frank Vilardi (Suzanne Vega, Jewel) and will include Tish & Snooky of Manic Panic fame on backup vocals and dance routines. Drew, I was at THAT show too! Mr. Dog was my favorite Bay Area band in the late 80s. Musically they were a much different band than The Counting Crows. They were definitely an 80s band. They sounded to me like a cross between U2 and Tears For Fears. Their lead singer had this amazing voice. I believe that he had a four octave range. They also had a very interesting stage presence. I also liked their female keyboard player that dressed like a gypsy. A very cool band! I initially saw them at The Berkeley Square when they opened up for China Crisis. I always give the opening band a chance (having been a member of many opening bands in my day). However, I was quite skeptical that a band called Mr. Dog would be any good. Boy was I wrong! I liked the show so much that I saw both bands again the next night at Wolfgang's in San Francisco. Actually (and I'm not 100% positive about this) I believe that only the bass player and guitar player from Mr. Dog are now in The Counting Crows. I believe that Adam Duritz teamed up with them after the demise of Mr. Dog. I was sad when they broke up. The rumor was that Mr. Dog was about to be signed to Bill Graham's label when the lead singer freaked out and quit the band. Supposedly he didn't want to become famous. That's the rumor at least. Too bad. They were a really good band. I have a demo tape of theirs that was given to me by my dear friend and former Voodoo Ecomonics bandmate, Phil Hudson. He had received the tape from them when they were auditioning for a new vocalist after their original singer left the band. They sent Phil a demo tape so that he could hear their msuic. Phil chose not to audition because it really wasn't his style of music. He knew that I really liked them and gave me the tape. It's amazing to see that band mentioned here on Ecto 10+ years later! Take care, Bill M. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V5 #236 **************************
