It was a long path that led me to her music. The last step in the path was the Ecto Home Page and reading the archives and the beginnings of Ecto after the Happy uproar on Gaffa. After I introduced myself to the list I received a very kind welcome from a number of wonderful people on the list including Vickie. We have since had a number of enjoyable e-mail correspondences. I asked her in one of those correspondences about some of the original Ectophiles and what they were doing now. I did inquire about you. Vickie told me that you didn't post to the list as much anymore for a number of reasons such as career, etc. She did tell me that there would be confetti, singing and dancing in the streets of Ecto when you posted again. So... WELCOME BACK JESSICA!!! I have reverence for the early founders of this forum. It is a very beautiful place to learn about and discuss Happy, her music, other Ectophilic music and so much more! I have also made a number of new friends here on Ecto. It is a pleasure to read your very kind response to Kelesyn! I agree wholeheartedly with all of the comments from you, Meth and Vickie on this one. I also understand Fog's comments on this one as well. Obviously Kelesyn loves Happy's music as we all do. I think that Vickie's overture is a wonderful thing. Please take her up on it Kelesyn. Both lists could have merit. Obviously Ecto has proven that it absolutely does! Ecto will always be held in reverence from my point of view because of the history and the legacy that it has created. It is a unique gem and legendary list! However... New legends are born every day. All the best to you Kelesyn! Again, WELCOME BACK JESSICA!!! Thank you for starting Ecto!!! Bill M. n.p. I didn't think I would be able to go, but my plans have changed and I just bought my tickets today. I announced the concert on my radio show last Friday and someone called up and wanted to know when Joni Mitchell had died!! I wonder if she'll be in attendance tomorrow night. For those of you who might be in the area but haven't heard about it, here's the information: Thursday, July 1, SummerStage commemorates Canada Day with a special fundraiser for SummerStage entitled JONI'S JAZZ featuring Eric Andersen, Joy Askew, Don Byron, Ravi Coltrane, Erin Hamilton, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross, Joe Jackson, John Kelly, Chaka Khan, P.M. Dawn, Vernon Reid, Toshi Reagon, Duncan Sheik, Jane Siberry and others. Unfortunately, Holly Cole will not be performing due to laryngitis. JONI's Jazz pays tribute to Joni Mitchell with an evening dedicated to her music. This extraordinary line up will feature the music of Joni's classic jazz-inspired period, with selections from "Court and Spark," "Mingus," "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," and "Heijira" in its entirety. - --Valerie Richardson np: Hejira ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Jun 1999 23:38:21 -0700 From: Shirley Ye Subject: Re: CDR labeling I have used the sticky labels with the guaranteed centerers on _all_ of my handmade CDRs. You don't need to.. it can get very expensive. Its 24 dollars for a 12 glossy label pack I think. So that translates to 2 dollars a CD. That would raise the costs of the CD. I wouldn't use them regarding the problems they can cause and that you mentioned. There are CD-Rs with a white surface (Verbatim for example). And there is a ink jet printer that can directly print on this surface. I think it's a Seikosha printer, which is quite expensive (> $500) but I don't know anyone who owns it. I am flying to Chicago in 8 hours and will be gone for 4 days. I haven't been online much this week because I have been busy preparing for the trip and working. Also, I was aware that Meredith had already posted something about my list on Ecto and on her wonderful website, and did not want to seem redundant or piss anyone off (so much for that) by seeming like I was recruiting. I sensed immediately the resistance, was puzzled, and unsure how to approach it right away. As I state in my list description: [Serenading] "is not intended to compete with any other list that may exist, but to amplify discussion, fellowship, and insight" (or something like that). >My suggestion would be to start over again. Welcome to Ecto...how'd you hear >about Happy? > >Vickie Thank you, Vickie, for the welcome and for the opportunity to introduce myself formally. I've been listening to happy since 1993 or 94. A friend played her music for me, and I resonated with it on many levels: emotionally, intuitively and intellectually. I like that Happy is not overly commercial and has great artistic integrity. My partner recently bought "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight" for me, and we loved it. Inspired, I spontaneously started my list as a tribute to Happy (and her fans) and to network others. Somehow, Happy learned of it and wrote to me, curious about "valuefulfillment" in my (other) e-mail. At that time, Happy gave me her blessings and support for my list. I was not aware until she told me that there was another list, and she encouraged me to join Ecto in addition. Her words were: >I'm honored to have this new mailing list thanks to you. >Regarding Ecto the mailing list. I don't think it's redundant to have two. >You should hook up with them and if nothing else, make some acquaintances. I would like to thank those who have been encouraging, supportive and sent such warm e-mails to me, including Happy (natch), Meredith, and Jessica. (I will write more when I return.) If anyone is still skeptical, feel free to contact Happy. Also, I am not a girl; my name fools everyone, don't be embarassed. I have to live with the name. I've been having fun putting together some MP3 comps recently and have made a different artsy label for each. If you want me to make up a few of these for the Ecto comp, I'd do so for just enough to defray the price of the replacement labels... I've never had any problem with "lopsided" labels. The ones I use are so heavy that they can easily be applied without thouse little alignment tools. I think they look really nice. Thanks, too, for clarifying your gender, my assumption based on your name was that you were female. (A common e-faux-pas, I guess). I've actually had some practice using a Memorex kit, printing up the labels and then using outdated CD-ROM software and (Vickie, heads up) unfortunate DIVX discs for target practice... heh heh heh.... Actually, we've got a few people out here on Long Island who label their CD-Rs (for sale) this way. John Tabacco (of the band Gear Head Freaks and Sonic Underground Records) must be having fun using paper labels, because he imports his art-designs (from the booklets and tray sheets) into the labels themselves. Plain vanilla's too bland for him.... Why would I want a label kit? I've still got this recording/original anime club plan, you see.... It's *really* hard to put a label on off-center; you would really have to work at it to make it malfunction. The costs might be more significant - I believe that it would cost about $1/CD for a label, counting in the price of ink. Howdy :o) Delurking to add my $.0225 (the Fed raised interest rates 1/4 of 1%, so I'm just covering my butt) ... I've been making random Tori remix CDs and wanted to do labels as part of the artwork, with much hesitation. However, once I bought the kit (Memorex) I was surprised how easy it was. The labels are *ALWAYS* centered, and I've never had a problem with peeling or tearing once the label was applied. I wouldn't hesitate in the least to recommend using them. - -josh- _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I was in B&N yesterday (doing my monthly search of the SF magazines for Xena articles ;) and saw that the June issue of Performing Songwriter has an interview with Jane Siberry about Sheeba and what she's had to go through to keep the label afloat. The entire issue is devoted to independent labels, and the cover feature is on Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records. The piece on Jane is short, but insightful. And the interview with Ani is quite possibly the best piece on her I've ever read. There's an MP3 of a song called "When I Was Dreaming" by Tori Amos, purportedly a demo from the _Little Earthquakes_ era at . It's quite odd -- it sounds more like an outtake from _Y Kant Tori Read_ than anything else, and to top it all off it's played on a slightly out-of-tune piano. But it's definitely Tori, and it's an interesting little tidbit. I have no clue where it came from or even whose site it's on.
