The weather was beautiful and coolishly warm all day and the music was good. There was a bit too much dust and hay swirling around, but hey, that's what you get when a concert is held on the infield of a racetrack ;) I went mainly to see Moxy Fruvous, Eileen Ivers Band, Eleanor McEvoy, and Beth Orton. And that was all I paid attention to. I could have stayed to see Black 47, Luka Bloom, Frances Black, Elvis Costello, and Martin Sexton, but it was a little late for me, my cat was lonely at home, and I'm still trying to recover some sleep from the past couple weeks. Other than the stages being a little too removed from the audience for my taste, this was perhaps the nicest big-festival type concert I've been to. Fairly well organized, pretty good sound, good music, not too crowded. Moxy were their usual selves. They have a new album coming out in August. This was my first time seeing Eileen Ivers and I was very excited to catch her live. While there were some sound problems during her set (and it didn't help that i was at the front barricade so that I couldnt get the best sound from the mainspeakers), i was still quite mesmerized by her set. If you don't know Eileen Ivers, she's a much lauded celtic fiddler (who's actually from new york) who performed for Riverdance. on her more recent albums, she's gone from straight celtic fiddle tunes to combining mostly afro and some caribbean styles into her songs. She has an excellent band and even has a tap dancer rounding out her ensemble. Her fiddling is astounding (i asked her for some advice on how to get that feel when playing jigs and reels after her set...i've learned some celtic stuff on the cello, but i play it so straight that it hurts *grin*) and she plays with such ease, it's amazing. One thing that was in her arsenal that didn't quite work were her effects pedals...I think that part of it was because of where I was standing, part of it was an actual sound problem, and part was that she just hasn't mastered them yet, but she didn't get the best sound out of her wah pedal and her distortion pedals. Still, it was cool to hear her mix it up with them. Eleanor McEvoy. She's definitely gone into a new "persona". Much more rock-star oriented with her presence (shorter hair, cooler "mod" outfit) and her backing band and arrangements add to that. After her set, I went to the HMV tent to tell her my thoughts on the album (which continues to grow on me) and I was happily surprised to have her, upon it being my turn to stand in front of her, say "Paul? Paul Kim?" I responded by saying "wow. yeah." :) I saw her a couple times in 96 when her previous album came out and somehow, through her website and managment, she knew of me and we chatted after her concerts. The last time I saw her was in the spring of 97, so i wasn't expecting her to remember me this time. We talked briefly about her new album and her current touring (her website only has the Fleadh dates, but she has been doing some club dates across the US and will be hitting DC and NYC soon. check www.pollstar.com for the actual dates) and i got another picture taken with her. Around this time I heard part of Richard Thompson's set radiating out over the field. Beth Orton was beth orton. Full band, which is different from when I saw her last november (it was just her and her guitarist then), so the arrangements were more full. This was her first date on the tour, I believe, since she's been touring with Joe Henry. She admitted to being hungover from the night before's performance at Pearl Street in Northampton. The sound people seemed to be fairly incompetent, not being able to get a good level (at least in my opinion) and balance in the main speakers. She only performed three songs from Central Reservation; two from Best Bit and a handful from Trailer Park filled out the rest of the set. I love that she had a bassist who mostly played on the upright. There didn't seem to be that much hesitation and shyness at all from the beginning; her voice was strong (well, as strong as her voice can be) and she had her sublimely goofy banter and body language at the ready. I left after Beth, which was around 8 pm. 9 hours of being baked unevenly by the sun. I managed to get a free copy of Eileen Ivers' latest album from a Sony rep who wanted to make sure that everyone in her signing line had something for her to sign...I had the booklet for her "...So Far" collection, but i wans't gonna pass up a free cd that i wanted ;) I also bought at the HMV tent the second volume of the Afro-Celt Soundsystem which I was told by the cashier was 10x better than the first one. If he's right, it should totally blow my mind. Looking at the credits, Sinead O'Connor and Ashley Maher lend their voices to tracks and Youth plays bass on one track. The only Fleadh left is the one in New York next Saturday. Lucinda Williams, Altan, Susan McKeown, Richard Thompson, Eileen Ivers, Eleanor McEvoy, and many more will be there. The Canfield show is on Tuesday night; my quandry about going to both is simply that I am insanely busy these days, and unlike, say, woj 'n meth, won't travel to a different state every week night just to see a cool show. Anyway. Lynn Canfield has been the lead singer of Area and Moon Seven Times, two of the quintessential ecto bands on the ethereal, dreamy end of the spectrum. WRONG. whoops. sorry that sounded really loud in virtual internet. i hate it when people do that. :) but i really disagree. you should listen to the album again. SECRET NAME has to be one of their best albums released yet. it probably is their snappiest too. you can actually tap your foot to about half the album, and they have written some of their most sublime songs yet. STEVE ALBINI did an excellent job recording them, (and that is saying a lot coming from me, as i have mixed feelings about him to say the least) the album has some really strong songs on there, probably just as strong as songs like OVER THE OCEAN, VENUS, or LAZY. stand outs are STARFIRE (#2), TWO-STEP (#3), IMMUNE (#8), and WILL THE NIGHT (#11) of course i might just be partial to the album because they have a song called MISSOURI on, in which they sing the word MISSOURI over and over, except they make it sound like MI-SE-RY over and over. how apt. for those not in the know, LOW is one of the bands that is in the forefront of the whole "slo-core" scene. slo-core is an arbitrary label (aren't all labels arbitrary?) stuck to a bunch of bands that don't really have all that much in common, other than that they play songs that are really mellow and slow. bands that have fallen into this category would IDAHO, RED HOUSE PAINTERS, VELOUR 100, SPAIN, and of course, LOW. very mellow, a distant second cousin to goth, but without the levels of pretentiousness, pancake makeup, and the obsession with all things black and death. LOW certainly can write some fantastic songs, songs that make you want to turn all the lights off, sit in the dark and absorb each note, and the space between each note. lovely. check them out. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 20:17:19 -0700 From: Irvin Lin Subject: anything box paul asked about ANYTHING BOX, and i will say, though i don't own anything other than PEACE, that they are anything but defunct. the group continues to release CD's on their own independent label, and have since their second album did poorly commercially, and they were dropped by their label. i believe their third release (and first independent release) was a remix album that was available via their fan club, and at shows that they play. after that, they continued to write music and produce CD's of new material. i fear i don't have any information for the specific release that you were talking about, and it quite possible is a "best of" sort of release with live material, a CD that i recently ran across in the used bins. it was released this year. i am assuming since, i was able to find it in the bins, that it got better distribution than their earlier work, which i believe was not distributed in any alternate way other than from the band and the fan club. i am sure if you were to hit the alt.music.synthpop newsgroup and post a query, you could find more specific information about said CD. for those who don't know, ANYTHING BOX is a synthpop band probably in the same vein as ERASURE. they came about during the 80's and the hey day of the synthpop era. along with other sort of obscure-ish bands like RED FLAG, CAMOUFLAGE, VOICE IN FASHION, CETU JAVU and what my sister likes to call asian disco (NEW ORDER, PET SHOP BOYS, ERASURE, and DEPECHE MODE being the main staples). ANYTHING BOX's first album PEACE was a must have CD for any teenager who grew up in the mid 80's and whose personal anthem was BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE. i do have fond memories of LIVING IN OBLIVION, my favorite song on PEACE. hope this helps. irvin ps. on a side note, i will say that a couple of months ago, i met a guy whose absolute favorite band ever is ANYTHING BOX. he was quite excited to meet someone who actually knew who they were. the shocker to the whole things was that he wasn't Korean, not even asian. he was white. whodathunk? white people listening to obscure 80's synthpop. not only listening, but proclaiming themselves their biggest fan (obviously he hadn't met my sister)!?! what is this world coming to??!? well. okay, he was gay. so it wasn't a complete shocker, but still..... pps. latest synthpop discovery JOY ELECTRIC. a christian synthpop band, i usually ignore the overly saccharine lyrics (though they certainly lend a slight campiness to the already over the top ambience), but the music itself is exactly as you would imagine a band with a name like JOY ELECTRIC would be like. bliss in synthsizer if you ask me. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 21:47:23 -0700 (PDT) From: sierran@earthlink.net (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: question answered Thank you much much for the answer of Cowboy Junkies. LORD) label based out of Bristol... it's more or less THE label, really, for hip-hop and trip-hop and all that... it's run by James Lavelle, who gets thanked on so many folks' records... Portishead, Tricky, and others... he's very influential in the scene... he also is the guy who put together UNKLE with DJ Shadow... anyhow... so Attica Blues are more or less a really really amazing hip-hop band (all good hip-hop ends up being called trip-hop anyway... what's with that?) with this incredible black female vocalist, a girl named Roba who was born in Egypt... she thanks Oum Kalthoum in the liner notes, too, which is interesting... for those of y'all not in the know, so to speak, Oum Kalthoum is more or less THE Egyptian singer... she was extremely extremely beloved in her homeland and in the Arab world... anyhow, the music itself (back to Attica Blues here) is just incredible, so for those of y'all who like Portishead and Mono and Lamb and that whole British trip-hop scene, I'd say get this... it hasn't been released in America, so you'll have to pay import price... I did, and it was SO worth it... I'd been reading about them for awhile, and their album showed up on import and my favorite record store here in town, and Lord... the CD is amazing... just amazing... so GO BUY IT! ;D John === ain't no way i lost this war and ain't no way you won _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
