Davey Spillane also plays pipes and whistles on a couple of songs. Ecto is the Happy Rhodes mailing list. With over 300 members, it's a fairly busy place. While ecto developed as a forum in which to discuss Happy and her music, it has grown into a very special home base for her fans. Topics on any subject of interest to Ectophiles are welcome. We talk about other artists besides Happy, and non-music topics seen on ecto range from movies to politics to just about everything in between. The list is available in both loose mail and digest format. You have subscribed to the loose mail format. Should you prefer the digest, as many do due to the volume of the list, please use majordomo to unsubscribe to "ecto" and subscribe to "ecto-digest". Send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with the following as the _body_ of the message: unsubscribe ecto subscribe ecto-digest end For help on majordomo, send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with "help", again in the _body_ of the message (the subject is ignored). To submit mail to the list, simply send mail to ecto@smoe.org. Please send all (un)subscription requests to ecto-request@smoe.org -- this address reaches the majordomo software which runs the list. Please send any questions or comments about the list to owner-ecto@smoe.org -- this address reaches the listowner. Thanks, Karen ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jun 1999 22:23:15 -0400 From: meredith Subject: merrie amsterburg, the nields Hi! It's been one of those weeks for music. I already followed up on Mike's comments about Elysian Fields and Kristeen Young on Monday ... but there's Wednesday and Friday still to cover, so here we go! Wednesday night woj and I headed back down to Fez to see Merrie Amsterburg play, where we met up with John Henshon. It had been a while, so I was really looking forward to it, and for the most part Merrie didn't disappoint. I'd never seen her with her band before (Peter Linton on guitar, Ed Valuszkas (from the Gravel Pit) on bass, and a drummer whose name escapes me), and now I think she, like Richard Shindell, would be better off going it solo. The drums and bass really didn't add much to anything (aside from "World Of Our Own Making", which was the highlight of the set ), and Peter's guitar was way too loud, so it completely overpowered everything Merrie played. Plus, the funkified bass groove they added to "Say Goodbye" made it into a happy song, which is just completely wrong, imnsho. Still, though, Merrie was in fine voice, and the songs still sounded mostly great. She's playing out to promote the Zoe reissue of _Season Of Rain_, which has three "bonus tracks" on it (all mercifully included on the "World Of Our Own Making" EP, so those of us who have had the original album forever don't have to shell out for an entire new one), all of which are well worth the wait. "Patchwork" is my favorite of the three, and I'm sorry she didn't play it. She did, however, play her stunning cover of Sting's "Walking On The Moon" as the encore. It's one of those rare covers which is all but unrecognizable until the chorus kicks in - the riff is amazing. I'm surprised there hasn't been more buzz about Merrie here. She's quintessential ecto material, not to mention she's one of the nicest people ever (it will never cease to blow my mind that she not only recognizes me, but remembers my name!). With the Zoe reissue she's going to have much better distribution, so now's a great chance to check her out. She told us afterwards that she's working on a west coast tour, and hopefully she'll be playing around the northeast more this summer. (She's singing the National Anthem at Fenway Park on August 5, the night after Nerissa and Katryna Nields sing it - must be Zoe Week at Fenway. :) Speaking of The Nields, last night they did a single sold-out show at the Iron Horse to debut the songs they're currently recording for their new album. A few of the songs have been around for a little while, but most of them were performed for the very first time last night. The album's scheduled to be released next April - I'm already counting down the days. :) New Haven's Mighty Purple opened. I'd seen them once before a few years ago at a local bands showcase at Toad's Place, and was less than impressed - -- this time I still wasn't thrilled, but they weren't as bad as before. They suffer from a terminal case of self-importance, which wears thin halfway through the first song. I found that if I went into Paula Cole mode (i.e. didn't look at them, just listened) they were much easier to take. Their music is earnest post-psychedelic-prog rock, with as many flashes of recent Duran Duran as Spin Doctors. I was also reminded at times of the sadly-defunct Pittsburgh band The Affordable Floors, though that was more a vocal resemblance than anything else. (This is a test to see if woj ever catches up on ecto again, because I know he'll vehemently disagree! ;) Tne Nields only played four old songs during their main set (one from each album), then three of the four songs in the encore. All the rest was unrecorded and brand-new. Nerissa has been posting bits of her studio journal to the Nields Nook list (which has been beyond fascinating), so I'd heard about most of the songs before actually hearing them. The band is trying for more of a studio creation with this album, so I know the finished product is going to sound quite different from what we heard last night (not to mention some of the songs haven't been really finished yet). Still, I'm pretty sure the new album is going to be far superior to _Play_. The songs are just plain better. The two that really stood out to me were "Caroline Dreams" and "Mercy House", both of which feature Nerissa on lead vocals and which are slower, lusher, and more intense than the usual Nields fare, building up to powerful choruses. I asked Nerissa to please add "Caroline Dreams" to the Falcon Ridge set list, and she said she'll see what she can do. :) There are some more of the band's signature rocking pop songs in the works, too, most notably "Jack The Giant-Killer" (about facing our childhood fears) and "Mr. Right Now" (which contains the immortal chorus, "All the promises that you've given to me/Don't mean nothing if you don't want to do me right now" ;). Nerissa has also ended her self-imposed moratorium on love songs - I can't recall the title, but it was beautiful -- the arrangement hasn't been worked out yet, so Nerissa just played her guitar while she and Katryna harmonized beautifully over it. I'd be happy if they just left it that way. Oh yeah, and there's a bluegrass number too, which was quite amusing. It'd make a perfect album-closer, hopefully they place it in that spot. The main set ended with a Big Stadium Show Ending Number called something like "For the love of my friends" (I know I'm getting that wrong). It was pretty cheezy in the lyrics, but perfect for what it was. For the Big Rousing Song-Ending Chorus they were joined on stage by sister Abigail, local singer/songwriter Ben Demerath (who played the oboe on _Play_ and is going to be on the new album as well) and the two leads of the Noho band The Maggies, Max and (um, can't remember her name). I have a feeling this song is going to be a blockbuster at Falcon Ridge. :) Interesting tidbit: Dar Williams is joining them on the recorded version of Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry". I'm beginning to think that song has been covered more often than "Happy Birthday", but when Nerissa and Katryna sing it it's achingly beautiful, and I can just imagine what adding Dar's voice to the mix is going to do. That's another I'm expecting to see done wonderfully at Falcon Ridge, since Dar will be on hand then. It was great to see the band again, and wonderfully refreshing to hear so much new material. It's a testament to the band's relationship with their fans that they felt they could do a show like this to test the new stuff out. It was overall a great show, too -- the between-song chatter was absolutely hilarious, mostly because they were all terrified. :> (Katryna's stories about how hellish it was growing up with Nerissa before big sister decided her kid sister was cool were painfully funny.) Ten months to release! :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jun 1999 15:32:55 +1000 From: "Martin G Bridges" Subject: Hello again Hi folks, Some of you may remember me as Martin from London.
