Before I do, I want to point out that I was in Tower Records yesterday, looking at what new releases I might like to get (new releases from this whole entire year, since I haven't bought a new cd since christmas), and I noticed that they'd stocked up on Beautiful South cds (because of their impending opening slot with the Barenaked Ladies here) which made me happy...then I noticed the Anything Box cd of _Peace_ and another Anything Box album. It looked to be independently released and didn't have a copyright year. There were some comments with the track listing on the back that all crowd noises were taken from actual Anything Box shows. I'm hazarding a guess that this album contains some old stuff since the group appears to be defunct. But does anyone have any info on the album? Is it all live? I ended up going to Newbury Comics around the corner and bought Mirrorball (eh..it's ok...one listen...some pretty bad editing though..crowd noise is brought in and out kinda conspicuously sometimes and you can actually hear the start of the next live song before a fadeout is complete on some tracks. I did get a free Sarah promo with live versions of Plenty and I Will Not Forget You, as well as the previously available remixes of Sweet Surrender and Possession. It was a Coalition of Independent Music Stores giveaway. I also got my grubby mitts on a cd of Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra doing some Mozart. and finally, thanks to ger perez for sending me a bunch of promo cds. I finally got to listen to Eleanor McEvoy's new one. The first spin through left me craving some salty foods because it was so sugary sweet in production. Lots of it. Eleanor keeps progressing in the presentation of her pop tunes. Her first album leaned more towards the softer, folkier side of pop; her second delved into a more rock and roll band, layered area of pop; and this, her third, pulls from the full studio-production-tricks bag and has lots of generated sound layers. If she had a stronger voice (not that I dislike her voice, it's unique and very much hers, but it's not a diva voice), she could have some big hits on her hands with this album. While the production isn't a big wall-of-sound-ala-Phil-Spector kinda thing, it is a nice cubicle-partition-of-sound-ala-typical-poppy-music. Synth strings and drums wedded with the real things; reverbed pianos like Bruce Hornsby; swirling synthy sounds. The songs are still very much the central point, and they continue to be what I enjoy about Eleanor. She expands her style again, including a wonderfully Jimmy-Buffetish song (Please Heart You're Killing Me), and also showing hints of techno, trip-hop, and dub (but just a little). The pianoandvoice ballad "Sophie" which i remember her performing the last time I saw her in maryland back in 1997 could be Marc Cohn/Chantal kreviazuk hit. For all intents and purposes, I should dislike this album. Eleanor writes such simple sweet pop tunes that would usually turn me off, but I continue to listen to her music. There's no hint of Irish on this album except for her vocals, there's lots of "currently hip" production which is flavor of the moment stuff. And yet it's growing on me. Lord help me...I'm losing my good taste credibility ;) For those of you who know the song that made her "famous", "Only a Woman's Heart", you'll enjoy the lead off track called "There's More to This Woman." There are some melodic and lyrical extrapolations from the first song which make this a bit of a sequel. There's a line that goes "there's more to this woman than a woman's heart" and it's followed by a synth muted trumpet doing a minor riff of a piece of the melody from the song. It's rather neat :) now on to the responses. Kim > Hi Paul, I'd say the new Diana Krall album is pretty typical of her style--the arrangements on some songs are a little too lush for my taste, but the title track is killer, and it has one of her funnest tracks-- a song called Popsicle Toes. Overall it's a pretty diverse album ranging from sparse to lush--but still pretty much in line with her previous work. She plays piano on at least half the tracks. Your sig reminded me of a cartoon in a Moon Seven Times comic book that they used to give away at shoes. (Perhaps Lynn Canfield will still have some to give away--be sure to ask her for those who are going to see her). One of the booksis about how cats are really an advanced alien species sent to spy on us humans. One panel showed a cat sitting on a book, with the caption, "No matter how many times we show them, human's still haven't learned to read with their butts." In regards to my recent post about a new compilation album compiled by Cheryl Wheeler--I discovered what I was looking for--it wasn't done by Cheryl Wheeler, but by Christine Lavin and it's the Stealth Project album. No wonder I couldn't find it in the archives or on the net at first. Well, that's all for now. She's a Berklee graduate :) I've been listening to my Happy cds more frequently recently...I was surprised to notice on "Looking Over Cliffs" from MWABT some samples of Native American chants that I actually recognized. One of my teachers from High School who was a good friend is very much into Native American culture and put together weekend excursions several times a year where he took students out to some farm land and we put up a tipi (that he had constructed) and learned about native american stuff and did cool things like drum circles and story telling. He brought a portable stereo and played some tapes of chants and songs, and one of the songs we learned to sing and dance to was the one that goes "hey oh way hi yona"...neato I was in a store the other day...what store I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure that I heard the tail end of Jane Siberry's "Maria"... Hearing Mila's version was almost as good as hearing a new Kate album-- it made me realize how phenomenal her songs are, and hearing covers of the songs are like hearing them in a whole new light--bringing back all the appreciation of Kate herself. I just got I Wanna Be Kate in the mail and I'm on my first listen--but so far I really like it--almost surprisingly so. The songs don't sound anything like Kate's versions--but they're definitely recognizable. I think this one's going to be a winner.
