And lots of other exciting stuff! Hiya 'philes, I just sent the following email to the Sarah Slean mailing list, Navy Soup, but the contents will no doubt interest many of you folks too, and the offer/invitation at the bottom of the email applies to all you ectophiles too, because Sarah and her management know how ectophiles embraced her way back when Atlantic Records had never heard of her and all she could afford to distribute was a cassette ep. I hope some of you can come to Sarah's CD release... I haven't met enough ectophiles! ====================== Hiya folks, Just met with the dynamic duo of Sarah and Heather last week, and things in the slean camp are shifting into high gear with the impending release of Sarah's new CD. First of all, in preparation for the new album, sarahslean.com will soon get a sleek new look, and we'll have a ton of fun new pictures for the viewing enjoyment of all you slean fans out there. Rumours have it that when Sarah was three, she was a blonde! Truth or fiction? See for yourself, coming soon at sarahslean.com! There'll also be several new tourdates up, including a July 11 appearance at the Celebrate Toronto Festival, and dates in Guelph, Ottawa and Wakefield, Quebec. We're aiming to have a brand new, full-length, CD-quality MP3 up on the website for Canada Day (that's July 1st to all you non-Canucks out there), and people can start ordering Sarah's new CD around then. And this brings us to the juicy part of this email! Sarah will have a public album release party on Friday August 13th at Ted's Wrecking Yard in Toronto. You're all welcome to come, of course. However, on Thursday, August 12th, Sarah will be holding a special private "invitation-only" release party and YOU'RE INVITED! Hobnob with the music industry brass! Or rather, let them hobnob with you, her cherished Navy-Soupers! Anyway Sarah wants to meet all of her beloved fans and hopes you can make it to this special event. If you'd like to come, follow the instructions below. The first 100 folks (including guests) to email us will be put on the guest list for the show! If you're travelling in and need a place to stay, post about it in Navy Soup and maybe one of the locals can reserve a special spot on their couch or their floor just for you. To get an invitation to the party, send an email to Heather Pollock with "PARTY AT SLEAN'S ON AUG 12!" in the subject line and the code phrase "One order of Navy Soup please" in the message body. Tell her where you're coming from, how many guests you want to bring (please keep this to a reasonable number, folks!), and a good joke if you've got one. A bad joke will do if you don't know any good ones. Prizes for the best joke and the worst joke. Also let us know if you have any special needs, like if you're under 19 (the legal drinking age in Ontario) or have any special requests. I think this'll be a really great chance for all the far-flung Navy-Soupers to meet each other and Sarah and the hardy Sleanstaff. I am psyched to meet as many of you as possible! I got mine from Bags Unlimited somewhere in upstate New York. They have a web site. My experience was a little different from Neile's. BU has about a dozen or so different options, which depend mostly on how much you want to spend. I agonized for weeks over this, not necessarily over the money, but having to do it all again for 1500 cds. I eventually plunked for for a two sided sleeve that will hold the j-card and the booklet on one side and the cd on the other, folding in the middle. Yes, they are very slick and do need some sort of divider or adjustable spacers to keep them from sliding around. My solution was some unused 4" long sections of 4" PVC pipe as spacers on the shelves, but that was only because I had them, your results may vary. It's a cheap way to do it. I'd avoid the whole binder thing, they're expensive and a huge filing problem, not to speak of being ultimately bulkier than jewel cases if you're talking about any notable number of cds. Making the move, however, quadrupled the number of cds I can store in the same cabinet, even if they are harder to read. (Collateral plus, you pull out cds you're not looking for...) The only thing I'd do different is get BU's Tyvek cd sleeve which will fit inside the vinyl sleeve. I have a perception that the vinyl is more abrasive than I'm really comfortable with. The sleeves were about $.07 ea. ppd, the Tyvek sleeves are about $.15 extra, not essential, only desirable (you can't read through them, but many cds don't have meaningful or legible writing on them anyway)(and you give up a certain amount of storage space.) Hope that helps. Peter Clark ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 12:59:52 +0200 From: Dirk Kastens Subject: Re: Electronica is a stupid word... alas... THAT'S cheesy. "acid-blues" I actually think that term isn't too bad... since my stuff could kind of be called "acid blues"... maybe... perhaps "K blues" is more appropriate... wait, but that'd be Portishead, wouldn't? ;D Movin' on... So all this talk of Kristeen Young's album "Enemy" made me go back to glenn mcdonald's site The War Against Silence [if you haven't seen it before, get your ass there NOW: http://www.furia.com/twas/] and re-read the article he wrote on the album recently... and I was like, "Wow, she's really pissed off! I'm getting it!" and Lo and Behold!, what should be in my Inbox but the lovely "Elysian Fields and Kristeen Young" post complete with Miss Young's mailing address! It's fate... or something... you know, I got "Meet Miss Young and her All-Boy Band" and I was really not into it, but she wasn't as pissed off on that album, apparently, because I remember thinking the lyrics were cheesy... and gleen mcd says the same thing too, he said that "Enemy" is a much more together and amazing album... so perhaps I'll have to re-visit the first one if "Enemy" kicks enough ass... the way glenn reacts to some of her lyrics is just wonderful, he makes some very interesting comments on her statements against reproduction, the lyrics "we had a foetus once / i squashed it like a bug" or something like that. Wow, she sure loves babies! Anyhow... so thanks for that lil' fated post! In other news: I'm totally thinking that it's time for me to head up to Toronto for Sarah Slean's CD release party... I have friends up there, and I keep threatening them with showing up at their doorsteps... so perhaps I will! It'll be ass-kicking... I'm going to go ahead and start researching ticket prices *now*... actually, I think the voucher I didn't use to go to NYC with my parents a few months ago may at least help me get there inexpensively... here's hopin'... so if any of y'all are going to be there, let me know! We'll "chill". ;D Umm... I had other things to say, but I can't recall what right now... so I'm going to leave well enough alone and call it a night. After listening for even a few moments, I was already commenting on not only how much her musical style almost mirrored her old Story mate, but even how ABSOLUTELY close her voice sounded to Jonatha's. Yes, this is likely because of their past collaborative efforts together, and their obvious artistic symbiosis at that time, but Jonatha's musical presence has evolved and changed since the break-up, and I found it almost freaky to hear that Jennifer's had seemed to evolve the same way. It's not to say that I don't like the album. (In a way, it's almost like getting a bonus Jonatha Brooke album out of nowhere) I enjoy it a great deal. Absolutely! I think Criterion should be listed too, as well as video rental stores, big (Blockbuster, Hollywood) and little (our mom & pop down the street) who refused to carry divx. I mention Warner simply because it's the biggest and did have a quite a lot of influence on others. (As did Sony, who also refused to release movies on divx. Now maybe we can get some of these holdouts (like Disney) to start giving us movies on DVD. We love our DVDs so much and (never thought this would happen) actually look *forward* to replacing a big chunk of our movie collection. >That, and the not-so-lowly-but-well-educated consumer who could smell a >virtual round of "three-card-monty"... Ayep! Here are some other people to thank, from an e-town forum: Subject: THANK YOU to the following people... Posted By: Sevenfeet When Posted: 2:34pm, 6/16 I think a hearty round of thanks go out to the people and organizations that banded together to either fight Divx or refuse to carry it. To etown, that provided this forum which was pretty much the birthplace of the anti-Divx movement. To the The Big Picture and the Home Theatre Forum for keeping up the fight on that message board. To Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits.com who asked Richard Sharp on that fateful September 1997 product announcement about the existing DVD customer base that already had bought from Circuit City. Richard Sharp's answer galvanized a movement and Bill Hunt's web site was one of the leaders of the fight. To Peter Bracke of dvdfile.com who probably kept some of the best arguments of why Divx was a bad idea online for anyone to read. To Steve Tannehill of dvdresource.com who took the unprecedented stand against Disney's foray into Divx by refusing to review any Disney product until they either changed their availability of titles on DVD or Divx dies, whichever came first. Fortunately, the wait wasn't very long! To Sears, Wal-Mart, Blockbuster and other retailers who refused to pariticipate in Divx. Special thanks to BestBuy who not only didn't carry Divx, but openly slammed Divx on their web site! To all the anti-Divx web sites, particularly bandivx.com and others who took the fight to the people explaining in plain english why Divx was anti-consumer. To David Ingram at Ingram Video Group which refused to carry Divx and sent a letter to all video retailers explaining why Divx was bad for their business. To Sony, Toshiba and Time Warner who refused to go along with Divx with either hardware or software. Special kudos and a "we're not worthy" salute to Warren Liberfarb of Warner Bros. for openly taking the Divx fight right to their faces at all trade shows and public interviews. Finally, to all of you out there who discussed the problems of Divx, spread the word to the community and anyone who would listen (often in Circuit City stores!). The Internet community deserves a special toast for taking this old mare out to the glue factory. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jun 1999 21:26:52 -0400 From: Bill Adler Subject: Eleanor McEvoy's Snapshots Spectacular and spirited -- that's my reaction to Eleanor McEvoy's new CD, "Snapshots." Snapshots has crisp, evocative lyrics; the songs have a very catchy rhythm. Most of the songs are about love and loss, but they're sung with a edgy, often clever, bent. I think the best song on the CD is "Did You Tell Him?" a song about unrequited love, which has a magnificent refrain that makes you think, "yeah, that's been me, too." McEvoy has a dynamic voice that she uses to project her feelings in a unique way. But be prepared to have some tissues nearby if you're in a melancholy mood when listening to Snapshots. After listening to Snapshots, I went out and bought one of her other CDs, "What's Following Me?" but found that "What's Following Me?" isn't as good as Snapshots, which I'd rate 4-stars.
