I think the kind we use are the ones you're thinking of, because they do hold the tray cards. This isn't a binder system--the sleeves are separate. They'd probably be just a bit too big to put into those binder slots, seeing as how they're big enough for the tray cards. They're twice the width of a traycard, and open in the middle (meaning they're made from a piece of vinyl the equivalent of 4 jewel boxes wide, and the outer edges are folded in to meet in the middle and the top and bottom are sealed, leaving the ends open in the middle to slip the booklet and disc & traycard in). The traycard and disc slide easily in one side and the booklet in the other (never a problem like getting them to fit it under those little tabs in jewelboxes), then they fold together once more to they're just a little bigger than a booklet. The only problem with them is that they slide if you stack too many of them on top of each other. We only put discs in the sleeves if we have more than one disc by the artist, and we save one jewelbox to use as a divider and put the artist's name in, so betweeen those and cardboard single boxes and all they fit nicely into a bookcase. FYI, here's the info about where we get ours: Cadence Cadence Building Redwood, NY 13679-9612 315-287-2852 They're simply called "cd sleeves" the description is "compact disc plastic sleeves". They are $0.15 ea., or were the last time we bought some, sometime last year. Cadences web page is http://www.cadencebuilding.com/Cadence/CJR.html, but I don't think it mentions the sleeves. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 19:19:51 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Fwd: Merrie Amsterburg Update >Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 12:00:25 -0400 >To: (Recipient list suppressed) >From: jsmyser@qdivision.com (Jessica Smyser) >Subject: Merrie Amsterburg Update > >REMINDER >This Wednesday, June 16. >Merrie and band play Fez, 380 Lafayette St. New York, NY. Last night I (along with Meredith, woj and Don) attended two amazing concerts in NYC. If you live in the NYC area and you spent the evening sitting around watching TV or something you really should thwap yourself repeatedly. ;) The first concert was a great performance by Elysian Fields at Fez. I'd never had the chance to see Elysian Fields perform before, but I really loved _Bleed Your Cedar_ and both woj and Don had raved about shows they'd seen so I was expecting something special. I was not disappointed. Regardless of the skill of the rest of the band it's Jennifer Charles that makes Elysian Fields what it is and this was something that was readily apparent on Monday night. Her amazing languid, sultry voice (and a stage presence that could be described with more or less the same adjectives) pretty much captivated the entire audience. The set list consisted almost entirely of material that was written after _Bleed Your Cedar_ was released, but a lack of familiarity with the songs didn't lessen my enjoyment in the slightest. The new stuff is amazing and I look forward to the day they're able to actually get their next album out. After being blown away by Elysian Fields I was wondering if Kristeen Young could possibly top what I had just seen. She did. I had heard a lot about how amazing she was live from both Don and woj, but nothing they said prepared me for just how intense and wonderful Kristeen's performance was. She came out in what I guess would be best described as her "insane girl scout" costume and, accompanied by her drummer Jeff White, started her amazing, intense, stunning... well, pretty much every positive adjective I might apply to a concert should be applied to Kristeen's performance on Monday night. I am now a confirmed member of the cult of Kristeen Young. To make things even better, I also finally picked up a copy of Kristeen's most recent album, _Enemy_, which has been raved about by more than one person on this list. Wow... just wow. Don has said that he thinks _Enemy_ is, at least so far, the best album of 1999 and I agree that it certainly is a strong contender for that spot. You can (and should!) order the CD directly from Kristeen by sending a check or money order for $13 (orders within the USA) or $20 (orders from outside the USA) to Kristeen Young, P.O. Box 315, Lancaster, PA 17608. (Price includes shipping and handling.) I was not disappointed. I was quite impressed as well, though it was all a bit too languid for the day I'd had. I had a hard time staying awake through some songs. The encore made it all worth it, though - a great jazz standard thing that went "when you're in love, nothing can be done". Jennifer Charles was born in the wrong decade -- as the guy at the end of our table stated afterwards, "She's a starlet - and she knows it!" She and Oren Bloedow should just do a jazz gig. I'd pay money to see that. :) > Regardless of the skill of the rest of the band it's Jennifer >Charles that makes Elysian Fields what it is and this was something >that was readily apparent on Monday night. Since we've been talking about genres here, I'll throw a question out - where would you file Elysian Fields? I've never seen a category labeled "dirge jazz", but that's pretty much what they do. Any ideas? > After being blown away by Elysian Fields I was wondering if >Kristeen Young could possibly top what I had just seen. Heh. Ye of little faith. ;) > She came out in what I guess would be best described as her >"insane girl scout" costume Oh, that's PERFECT. Picture this: Wisp of a thing with pigtails, wearing Army surplus cutoff shorts over fishnet stockings, combat boots, and a camouflage tank top underneath a flak jacket. The jacket, and the cap she had on were all festooned with the detritus of American culture (she made some comment about wearing garbage): a Lays potato chip bag, an Oreo bag, various McDonald's logos, and other stuff I couldn't quite make out. She had an orange water pistol and two toy cell phones stuck in her belt, and tiny plastic binoculars in the vest pocket, all of which became parts of the show at some point. >and, accompanied by her drummer Jeff >White, started her amazing, intense, stunning... well, pretty much >every positive adjective I might apply to a concert should be >applied to Kristeen's performance on Monday night. Hear, hear! If your ears have stopped ringing, that is. :} Yow, the show was LOUD!!! It's amazing how much noise one keyboard, one drummer, and one woman shrieking like a banshee can make. For those of you who haven't heard any of Ms. Young's music, the most often heard comparisons are really the most apt: Imagine Kate Bush (during her "Babooshka"-video phase) and Lene Lovich, and you're part of the way there. In live performance, Kristeen is what we wish Kate Bush would have given us all along: broad, theatrical, and wonderful. For some songs she let the keyboard play itself, while she went off to a mic standing off to the side of the stage where she had more room to thrash around. On the others she played the keyboard, and on all the songs Jeff Whiteprovided an excellent drum accompaniment. Perhaps the most amazing thing about Ms. Young is how sweet and shy she is off stage. If you were to pass her on the street (provided she wasn't wearing a dress made of Wonder Bread bags or anything ;), you'd never guess in a million years what she's capable of when she gets behind a microphone. She must be a Gemini. ;> Oh yeah, and I liked the show too. :) Merrie Amsterburg tomorrow night -- will we be seeing anyone else besides John there? +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 19:03:53 -0700 (PDT) From: sierran@earthlink.net (JoAnn Whetsell) Subject: mirror mirror on the wall Hi. Just picked up Sarah's brand new "Mirrorball" today, and it's quite good. Really good in fact. I haven't listened to the whole thing yet, but so far my favorite is "Path of Thorns." I'm a little disappointed that the album is so heavily weighted on the latter end of her career, particularly Surfacing, but this is certainly made up for by quality. I've always liked Sarah's live recordings better than seeing her in concert. The 3 times I've seen her (2 Lilith Fairs and once on the Surfacing tour) she was good, but the songs didn't vary much from their studio versions. There seems to be more change here, and her voice is simply angelic. Plus it's great to have lyrics for the Surfacing songs. My only complaint is that my computer is too archaic to play the cd-rom. Me too. This week I picked up a copy of Simon Raymonde's *Blame Someone Else,* and so far I have been underwhelmed. A few of the songs have Cocteau Twins-like guitar passages, but even these are sometimes ruined when they transition into something utterly conventional and banal. And the voice! Think Ringo Starr. Ugh. And twenty bucks for the import, too. If anyone's still curious, I'm willing to trade it... The 3 times > I've seen her (2 Lilith Fairs and once on the Surfacing tour) I hope I don't sound too horribly snobbish, but this does _not_ count as seeing Sarah live in my book. Back when she played mid-sized theaters and/or smaller, when virtually every song had a new and/or evolving arrangement, when you could show up for a general admission show and get front row seats without much effort -- hell, when there _were_ ga shows... Sarah, for those shows I got to see, remains to date my single favorite live act. I've travelled farther and more often to see Happy, and will continue to do so...at least until I start hearing that she's doing shows that would make me happier staying home and listening to old CDs. And while I hope Happy gets the kind of fame and fortune and respect that Sarah has achieved, I also hope that her music never devolves to the point that I find it, like _Surfacing_, to be boring. I'm very curious to hear _Mirrorball_; maybe it gets around those things that I hear are lacking from her live shows these days -- perhaps it manages to weave together the bits and pieces of the old style shows that surfaced (heh) in her more recent touring and creates a genuine faux show that would have been worth seeing. jeff - -- |Jeffrey C.
