For Dutch meassures that is; $7.50 for a 4 track ep / cd single. The ep has 4 acoustic tracks, just Heather with a guitar, but I quite like it. I feel it does show glimpses of her other recordings. Let me know if you'd like a trade. :-) Then, Joshua wrote about Toyah: > I am a relatively new Toyah fan. I found her "Ophelia's Shadow" tape > for three bucks back in 1994 and thought it was wonderful and still do. > I also just got her "Phoenix" CD from amazon.com and I seriously > cannot stop listening to it. And, if indeed Toyah's earlier > work is just as good, why isn't Toyah one the "goddesses" in the > Ectophiles guide to good music? Toyah used to be one of my favourite artistes in my 'new age years', in the early '80s. I loved "Anthem" and "The Changeling" and especially her live double album "Warrior Rock" (and most of all the track "IEYA" !), and I also bought "Love is the law" but didn't like that as much (too smooth) except for one track, a wonderful ballad (was that "The vow"?). I also remember a great video for "Brave new world". I think I still have these albums, on vinyl, but I haven't listened to Toyah for years and years. I wonder whether I'd still like her albums. At the time she was at the same high level for me as Siouxsie & the Banshees ("Kaleidoscope" and "Juju" era), and I think I even saw her live once at a festival though I'm not sure about that, that period in my life is rather hazy for some reason. Those were my most depressive years and I think I don't want to be reminded of that era too much. Maybe Toyah's music is too much connected, or maybe time has eased it out by now so that I can enjoy the music on its own, but I haven't felt up to trying it out. I never had that connection as strong with Siouxsie's music, don't know why. Toyah, in my memory, seems a lot more lively and up than Siouxsie. Maybe the word here is 'dated'??? Maybe I should give her a try again. Looking at her website I noticed she has released a whole lot of stuff since then, and seeing those early albums and reading about them does bring back some good memories - "Be proud, be loud, be heard!". Songs like "Angel and me", and "The pact"... Yes. I should listen to them again. :-) Anyway, I guess what I try to say is that, at the time, especially "The Changeling" but also "Anthem" were considered highlights in Toyah's career. I haven't followed her since "The vow" and I've never heard the albums you have so I can't compare them. There is an extensive Toyah website at http://www.interlog.com/~stab/toyah/ with a lot of album reviews (quite like the Guide actually) under the heading of "Toyah entries found at the Online Music Database". Which makes me wonder, does anybody know that Online Music Database? It does seem a lot like the Ecto Guide, with reviews and links and info. Its homepage is at http://www.roadkill.com/~burnett/MDB/ I did a quick search for Happy, she does have an entry but it's quite sparse (only "Equipoise" is mentioned) and out of date. Maybe somebody could send some updates. If it's still working. And not me, not now, I should be working instead of writing this... :-) Best wishes, Marion n.p. Borders (one of the other places Emily mentions on her web site as carrying her CDs) has it as "special order" on their web site and I see that CDNow doesn't have it listed at all, so it's probably not just Amazon. If you are in the Chapel Hill\Raleigh\Durham area,...if you get a chance, please check out a friend of mine who is performing regularly in that area. Her name is Jamuna. She is a singer of Russian and Gypsy folk music and is currently performing in the Chapel Hill and Asheville NC areas. ******************* I know this is the second time some of you have seen this. Sorry...I'll be quiet for a while now ;) ******************* Almost all of the songs she sings are in Russian, but she still communicates the heart of each song directly to everyone in the audience. She will be playing Saturday, June 12th at the Silk Road Tea House (Sufi Cafe) in Chapel Hill. Check her out if you get a chance...tell her Chris says hello. BTW...Jamuna is not a Russian name. She adopted it after a visit to India. If you are interested, drop me an email and I will email you a short MP3 snipet of one of her songs. The following is from a press release for her... ================================================================ Jamuna has come from Russia and is currently staying in Asheville where she has delighted audiences many times with her singing and guitar. Spontaneouus, passionate, vibrant, graceful, sensitive and engaging, Jamuna captivates her listeners with a percolating warmth. They seem to understand her even though they do not speak the Russian language. Born in Moscow, Jamuna was drawn to music at an early age. After receiving classical training at the Gnessins High Music College in Moscow, Jamuna's musical career started in Russia's famed and beautifully ornate subways. "It was as if I were playing in museums," says Jamuna. "I loved the sound in the tunnels and the thousands of peoples whose hearts I was able to touch with the music". Jamuna is currently accepting bookings for appearances at colleges and other institutions and venues where people would be interested in hearing and learning about Russian tradional folk music combined with the modern sounds from the Russian subways and streets. Cassettes are also available.
