She is Wendy Stark and the CD is Child of Transference (New World Music NWCD 467) and I can guarantee that this album will go down exceptionally well with lovers of Adiemus and Enya. Child of Transference is an extended choral type work. A blend of contemporary rhythms and production. The structure of the songs are influenced by classical music and thematic qualities. The blurb on the cover says: "Wand's music is impossible to categorise. If you imagine the ethereal sounds of Enigma, the haunting vocals of Enya, coupled with superb, almost classical arrangements, then you will have something close to the complexity of this superb debut album" To me her voice sounds like a dreamier version of Michelle Tumes, and I like the sounds that she produces very much. Like the text of the Adiemus vocals, the verses have been written in phonetic manner, so that they have an almost instrumental sound. The idea being to remove the distraction of words and maximise the feelings and emotions using vocal expression alone. From South Wales, Wendy accompanies herself on guitar and most tracks are backed by a fairly rich instrumentation. I picked up my own copy from Borders in London at the astonishingly low price of £8.99, but I can find no trace of the album on the Borders Website ( www.borders.com ) or indeed any of my other favourite online vendors such as CDNow, CDUniverse or CheapCDs (http://cheapcds.com ) The record company has a website (www.newworldmusic.com) from where purchases can be made, but the album is so new that it does not appear in their catalogue, however, I am so excited about this album that I may put some RA samples for you to listen up on my site at http://listen.to/female-vocals but that won't be for a day or too. Graham Lubin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1999 07:48:32 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: tour news << Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, and David Lindley have announced the formation of a collaborative ensemble which will tour through August and September. "The whole idea started when we were doing acoustic benefits together," says Raitt. "Last December, Jackson, Bruce and I did some shows for Hurricane Mitch relief and a few days after we called each other and said that it was so much fun, we should really try to take this out on tour. We immediately thought to call Shawn Colvin and David Lindley to see if they would like to join up with the idea that we would all be one band. The idea is to weave in and out of each other's solo sets and also play together as a band." >> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Jun 1999 07:47:04 -0400 From: Michael Stevens Subject: Re: Jamuna Shortly after bedtime, Chris Stack announced: >I just wanted to take a minute to introduce the music of a friend of mine to >you lovers of the exotic in the Chapel Hill NC area. Auugghh! I feel like Charlie Brown's mirror twin: the moment I turn my back, the football is held in perfect position. I'll be in Boulder, CO that weekend (Sshhhh! Be vewwy, vewwy quiet -- I'm hunting houses), so one of the other Triangle ectophiles will have to fill in for me. Heather? Patrick V? Lurkers? :-) The Silk Road Tea House is a wonderful venue, located on the west end of the main drag in Chapel Hill. The menu draws on Middle- Eastern cuisine, including a wealth of soups and teas. The baklava is first-rate (though I admit, in the company in which I was first taken to Silk Road, I would have given five stars to a revisionist burrito). The atmosphere is informal (most seating is on floor cushions), the decor is gorgeous, and I predict a quiet and respectful audience for Jamuna. First-timers should be aware of one house rule about which the management is deadly serious: NO political discussions. None. Zip. It has made life a little more beautiful, but..... I can't play videoCD's anymore! I have a few of them, a.o. Kate Bush's "Whole story" and Mylene Farmers "En Concert". I used to play them with an MS Mediaplayer (downloadable as mpfull.exe all over the Net), and although I did re-install it, I keep getting the message that it can't find any audio hardware. So I see the pictures, but there's no music. The same goes for MP3's: it can't play them anymore. I do have a program called Sonique, which plays my MP3s without any problems, and WAV's _are_ accepted by the mediaplayer. So I keep wondering what can be wrong. I do have a weird PC though: after I formatted my harddisc I couldn't install W95 because the initial setup was hindered by the virus program "enabled" setting in the BIOS. A friend of mine, who works with PCs, had never even heard of this problem occurring! Anyhoo, if you can help, please mail me here or on mfgr@casema.net. ObHappy: When is she touring Europe???? I'd appreciate any comments anyone has on the albums or on Penelope generally. I was listening to the albums and was struck by their individuality and energy--I think her punk background (with The Avengers) really informs her approach to folkrock and makes it something zippier. And of course her lyrics are great--witty and incisive. Her new album, _tongue_, really takes a different, far more gutsy rock-oriented turn. As I listened to it last night it occurred to me that it's more the album I might have thought Sara Craig would do after _Sweet Exhaust_ rather than _Miss Rocket_. It's definitely fierce. http://www.RepriseRec.com/penelopehouston/ has some sound samples in QuickTime 3 and Real Audio. Has anyone else tracked down this album? I think it's a knockout. It should be readily available, because it's with Reprise. There's also a new official site at http://www.penelope.net/ but there's not too much there. I'd also appreciate it if any of you who have it would check your copies of Penelope's limited edition _Silk Purse (from a sows ear)_ disc--our copy has a strange white bloom on the plastic and is now unplayable. This is the first time I've run across something like this. Has anyone else had the same problem? The disc isn't replaceable, so it's a sad loss, though a couple of the songs there appear elsewhere. - --Neile - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Jun 1999 13:48:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Thief Catcher Subject: Trading Post?/Eszter Balint Hey gang -- I wanted to delurk because I'm looking for the URL (Earl!) for the Ecto Trading Post. Lately I've become fascinated with the music of a band called the Poster Children, whose lush, revolutionary-tinged tunage sounds like a cross btwn the Minutemen and Galaxie 500. Supposedly. (And if the track I have on a comp tape is any indication...but anyway.) However, I'm running on a budget right now because my short film is going into production soon, and I don't want to buy new music until after that's behind me. The library doesn't have any records by the band, and I would love to trade some of my music for a copy of one of their records. Somehow I doubt the ETP would have any Poster Kids, but it's worth a shot. So...the URL, please? I also wanted to come on here and talk a bit about Eszter Balint, about whom I enquired eons and eons ago. For the uninitiated, EB is best known as an actress for her work in underground cinema -- her parents were actors, and she took up the family trade at the age of 9 in an Andy Warhol film (_Lost Love_, I think). However, her best known role is that of Cousin Eva in Jim Jarmusch's genius work of resourcefulness and simple beauty, _Stranger Than Paradise_. Since StP is one of my all-time favourite movies, I naturally wanted to hear what kind of music its lead actress made, and as a result sent out for a copy of her debut album, _Flicker_. It wasn't quite what I'd expected, given the comments I'd heard from people who'd seen her live, but it's quite the album anyway, a loverly concoction of creative normal-girl observations, with some dark flourishes and delightfully obtuse lyrical turns. Plus, Eszter has a haunting, compulsively listenable voice -- a slightly gravelly mezzo warble that sounds like it could emanate from the throat of a thoroughly twisted "normal girl". For those who favour short answers and need a frame of reference, EB sounds like the offspring of Tom Waits and Edith Frost. Good stuff, great musical accompaniment to riding one's bike through Central Square on a blissfully breezy dusk. Rachael Sage-- Smashing the Serene I just got this album a few days ago, and I absoultely LOVE it. I listen to it, well, more than a lot. It's pretty much stayed in my cd changer and gets frequent play. I had thought about getting the album for a while. Based on ecto and Ladyslipper reviews, it seemed like something I would like. But the sound clips on Ladyslipper I listened to (granted there were only 3 30-second clips) I liked but was hesitant about. I thought her voice sounded weak and that the catchiness of the songs would wear off. Wrong! Her voice is soft, but not weak. Her songs are catchy, but they have intelligent lyrics and tasteful arrangements. And I'm really glad for the hidden track reprise of "Crack of Dawn," my favorite song on the album. Getting Snashing... has clinched my decision to go to Lilith Fair this year, just so I can see Rachael perform. JoAnn (And yes, Neile, you can use that for the Guide. :) I'm at the library now, but the last thing I was playing was... you guessed it...
