Naturally I had to have a go at it - it all works as advertised. Knowing Damon's excellent work on Ecto Guide, I'm not suprised. It did seem a bit slow and sometimes the results of the query would start coming in and then just hang there without ever completing the page, but hopefully that will improve on the production system (or will it? I wonder what is the current workload of smoe's server... ) One feature would be pretty useful, I think: the ability to refine the search by specifying the dates to search between - would that be a lot of work to add ? I wonder what is the current workload of smoe's server... ) yeah, i'm curious too. i think the biggest limiting factor on good ol' odin here tends to be the nasty IDE hard drives, when file intensive stuff like searching is going on. still, i'm surprised by your description of the problem; once it starts spewing out search results (actually once it even sends the first character for the page) it's already *done* the actual searching, and there's really no reason why it should hang at that point, as there's nothing very intensive happening. could it have been a flaky connexion, do you think? any idea what percentage of the time that happened, about how much of the page you got before it stopped, and what you were searching for at the time? > One feature would be pretty useful, I think: the ability to refine the search > by specifying the dates to search between - would that be a lot of work to add ? No, actually - that should be very easy indeed to do. OTOH, a feature i *was* trying to add earlier today - highlighting of the lines or other records containing the search items, in the returned pages - turned out to be near impossible; i did eventually massage html enough to do what i wanted reasonably and display well enough in the latest versions of netscape (both linux and windows), internet explorer, and lynx, but then when i ran some actual searches i often had it timing out on me because it took so long to process the extra data from glimpse. so i think, regrettably, i'm going to have to leave that out. or i could leave it as an optional thing that could be turned on on very fast systems. :) right now it's a pain, though, doing the searches, because all you get back is a big ol' digest and then it's up to you to find out where the search matched... what i really need is some archiver better than glimpse, but no way am i going to try to write one right now ;) > Additional cheers for the idea of releasing the code under GPL! like i said... gotta write some docs. which i will do once it's stabilised a little... - -damon Damon Harper des Jumeaux _/>_ "Zathras talks to dirt. damon@jumeaux.bc.ca __\ /__ Sometimes talks to ceiling Les Jums: jumeaux@jumeaux.bc.ca \ / and walls, but dirt is http://www.jumeaux.bc.ca/damon/ |/||\| closer." - Zathras, B5 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jun 1999 11:57:01 EDT From: SpiritWe@aol.com Subject: Re: ecto-digest V5 #195 In a message dated 6/6/99 5:58:33 AM, you wrote: <> Hey there...wish I could make it to Toronto! yes, they're great...lead singer Dave Slomin is from NYC & I've caught him a bunch of times, strong, smooth voice somewhere between Counting Crows, James Taylor & Dave Matthews, but more rock actually...great writer too. Her name is Jamuna. She is a singer of Russian and Gypsy folk music and is currently performing in the Chapel HIll and Asheville NC areas. Almost all of the songs she sings are in Russian, but she still communicates the heart of each song directly to everyone in the audience. She will be playing Tuesday June 8th at Jack-in-the-woods Pub in Asheville, Friday, June 11th at Malaprops Bookstore in Asheville and Saturday, June 12th at the Silk Road Cafe (Sufi Cafe) in Chapel Hill. Check her out if you get a chance...tell her Chris says hello. BTW...Jamuna is not a Russian name. She adopted it after a visit to India. If you are interested, drop me an email and I will email you a short mp3 snipet of one of her songs. The following is from a press release for her... ================================================================ Jamuna has come from Russia and is currently staying in Asheville where she has delighted audiences many times with her singing and guitar. Spontaneouus, passionate, vibrant, graceful, sensitive and engaging, Jamuna captivates her listeners with a percolating warmth. They seem to understand her even though they do not speak the Russian language. Born in Moscow, Jamuna was drawn to music at an early age. After receiving classical training at the Gnessins High Music College in Moscow, Jamuna's musical career started in Russia's famed and beautifully ornate subways. "It was as if I were playing in museums," says Jamuna. "I loved the sound in the tunnels and the thousands of peoples whose hearts I was able to touch with the music". Jamuna is currently accepting bookings for appearances at colleges and other institutions and venues where people would be interested in hearing and learning about Russian tradional folk music combined with the modern sounds from the Russian subways and streets. Cassettes and Videos are also available.
