I found a fairly cheap copy of ABORT while CD shopping a few weeks ago, and picked it up (Neal, I didn't know you had been looking for it!). I already have my own, so in case anyone else has been searching for it, please let me know... - --Sue Trowbridge * albany, california trow@slip.net * www.interbridge.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Jun 1999 02:03:47 -0500 From: There is no spoon Subject: The Dreamlife of Angels music question Hey there, I saw The Dreamlife of Angels earlier this evening and I was very interested in the song that played at the end. For a few seconds I thought it was Virginia Astley. I quickly changed my mind, but I'm still curious as to who it was. I tried to check the credits but they were going too fast. Does anyone know who it is? I know the film has been out for over a year in other areas of the world (I know the 2 actresses won a tie prize at *last* year's Cannes) but it's only now playing in Chicago. So this might have been discussed long ago and I didn't pay attention. Btw, the film is so good, so emotional. It's one of the best I've seen this year. (I had a very strange, eclectic movie-going day. I saw The Phantom Menace, for the 2nd time - I'm a sucker for Star Wars - then Dreamlife, then EXistenZe, or however it's supposed to be spelled, which I hadn't yet seen, and thought I would hate, but ended up liking. I almost went for a 4th movie...a midnight showing of SLC Punk, but decided not to try. I'll have to go back and see it another time.) It's funky and messy, and we have 4 cats, but you can sleep on the couch. Just give us some warning so I can fire up the (little used) vacume cleaner and put away some of the hundreds of videotapes and CDs carelessly scattered around and piled up on the dining room table, rendering it completely useless as a dining room table. You *have* seen Albuquerque at night from the upper west side of the bowl, haven't you? It's the the most magical nighttime citycape I've ever seen, something about the desert atmosphere makes the lights sparkle like jewels on a black velvet carpet. When I used to drive for a living and went through there, I'd make it a point to travel at night, then take the last (or first, depending on which way I was traveling) westernmost turnoff, pull over in a quiet area, get out and sit on the hood and just marvel, ooh and aaah. (I wanted to mention it just in case no one has taken you or told you to go up there). V ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Jun 1999 15:05:37 -0400 From: Paul Kim Subject: Mamet play with Pidgeon in boston, question about James David Mamet is directing a new play which he wrote in Boston. It's playing at the Hasty Pudding Theatre in Harvard Square(ok, so it's not really boston, but close enough) and it features his wife, Rebecca Pidgeon, and Felicity Huffman, she of the wonderful ABC tv show (written and created by Aaron Sorkin, another plyawright) Sports Night and also of Mrs. William H. Macy fame. It started its run yesterday and goes through the 27th of this month. The play is called _Boston Marriage_ and is "a comedy of manners about two lesbian women at the turn of the century and their maid" Does anyone know where the version of "Ring the Bells" by the group James which was used in an X-Files episode from the third season called "D.P.O" can be found? I have the original version on their album _Seven_, but the version from the episode started off more like a ballad before building up in speed and energy, and it had more prominent use of what might have been a squeeze box of some sort. I thought maybe it was from the Alternative NRG compilation which I think has a live version of the song, but I haven't been able to check it out. This is one of those "searching on and off for several years" kind of things. Two weeks ago while buying books for summer classes at the school bookstore, they were giving away free copies of the new Cranberries album. I think that the bookstore was recently bought by Barnes and Nobles and so they're trying to introduce the sale of non-school stuff such as popular cds and such...the Cranberries cds were promos, I gather, from the slightly cracked cd cases and holes in the spines. It's not that bad an album, not that great either. I swear one of the songs sounds like a Smiths ripoff. The lyrics sheet is fun to look at...Delores had a hand in writing all of the songs, and she includes all the vocalisations she uses such as "eh oh eh oh 18x". My brain is simply not capable of interpreting that last sentence! :-) Let me know if you want to come through Toronto. Actually for those interested our big music festival, North by Northeast (NXNE) is next weekend. And unlike the Austin (SXSW) and New York (CMW) festivals, this one is actually affordable for the average person... eminently so in fact, it's only $18 in our lightweight canuckbucks for a wristband to get you into any of the venues for all three nights. Kristy Thirsk (ex Rose Chronicles) is one of the many cool people playing. Jess Klein's name has popped up on this list every once in a while. What do people here think of her? I'd like to see her but the venue she's playing at is on the other side of town from all the others. And Mr. Henry, are they any good? What a gorgeous little treat, both visually and aurally. I've been looking forward to this ever since it was hinted about in the flyers that accompanied the tour stop in NYC last year. I'm sure she would have done as fine a job producing it even without the misfortune that it now pays tribute to, but knowing all that makes it seem even more poignant. I have a feeling I'll be ordering more of these as gifts. Oh stop lining up! Go get your own! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Jun 1999 19:16:42 -0500 (CDT) From: kerry white Subject: Walter Hyatt etc Hi, Several days ago Java-ho (Hi Lisa) asked for a friend about an Austin City Limits. It was a two-part question and the first answer was Walter Hyatt. I just looked up the ACL episode in ProTrack here at work and found the tape. The women invovled with this tribute show were: Shawn Colvin, Marcia Ball and Alison Moore. I forget the description of the woman he asked about, but I hope that Lisa and her friend can figure it out without my having to watch the whole show. (SC and AM are singing - MB sits at a piano and sings) I may be paid to watch ACL but I don't have to 'watch' it. KrW Hark! What rock through yonder window breaks? Bah!
