Add another vote for Sluggy, which is always one of the high points of my morning. I also enjoy User Friendly, at http://www.userfriendly.org/static/. Recommended for the geeks in the audience, especially those with a Linux bent. Although it's not really a strip -- more a graphic novel told in infrequent installments -- I highly recommend Argon Zark at http://www.zark.com/. It's got a fun story, and absolutely stunning digital artwork. And finally, for one panel of bitter fun, even though it's not really a panel, there's "Tina, the troubled teen," at http://www.brunching.com/toys/toy-tina.html. Actually pretty much everything from the Brunching Shuttlecocks makes me laugh. - Larne ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 13:39:29 -0700 From: "Neil K. It's got a fun story, and absolutely stunning >digital artwork. Argon Zark is indeed impressively drawn. In terms of online comics here are a couple of other suggestions: Christopher Baldwin's Bruno: http://www.brunostrip.com/bruno.html Beautifully drawn, but heavily packed with text. For those with a morbid fascination for the adventures of a neurotic depressed angsty east-coast American white over-analytical bisexual woman with frizzy hair. :) (I think she reminds me too much of an old friend of mine whom I run into occasionally.) Interestingly, Baldwin recently signed a movie development contract for the character. Alison Bechtel's Dykes to Watch Out For is a professional strip that appears in a lot of gay/lesbian publications. You can read it online at: http://www.washingtonblade.com/forum/cartoons/dykes/archive.htm Both of these strips involve somewhat complex soap opera stories, so it's probably worth starting a month or two back. I'm totally envious of these two artists. The ability to convey so much emotion and expression in a few strokes of the pen... sigh. - Neil K. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 15:00:20 -0700 (PDT) From: Damon des Jumeaux Subject: Re: not another mention of Paul "self-aggrandizing" Kim On Fri, 4 Jun 1999 larnep@pathfinder.com wrote: > > They're rare. AJ: oh bite me. i've used "copy con". greg: yeah? well i wrote my files with echo. AJ: dolt! greg: wimp! miranda: well, i edited the inodes by hand. with magnets. some might not `get it', but i could almost imagine being involved in just such a conversation... the only others i can think of to recommend these days are bizzarro (assuming it still exists... it's been a while) by dan piraro: > "Ever since I bought my first original BIZARRO cartoon my hair done grew > back, my wife stopped cheatin' on me, and I won the state lottery....... > THREE TIMES!"* > > *some facts have been changed to fit the available space. that quote just about sums it up. another i enjoyed for quite a while was mutts, by patrick mcdonnell. it's... *very* whimsical, most of the time. though the last few times i've looked at it i've wondered if it isn't getting cutesy... anyway, if you've ever pondered the antics of small cats and dogs, this could be a good choice. it's at http://www.kingfeatures.com/comics/mutts/, stuck amongst kingfeatures' other (generally crappy) cartoons... that's all i can think of - i don't often read cartoons these days, since the disillusionment of losing calvin and hobbes... ;) userfriendly has become a daily-or-so routine though. - -damon Damon Harper des Jumeaux _/>_ "Verbosity is the refuge of damon@jumeaux.bc.ca __\ /__ those who have nothing Les Jums: jumeaux@jumeaux.bc.ca \ / original to say." http://www.jumeaux.bc.ca/damon/ |/||\| - Weldon, Reasonable Doubts ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 15:21:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Damon des Jumeaux Subject: list archive browser/searcher hi there! beta tester alert! ages ago, i promised jeff i would put some time into creating a browsing/searching engine for the lists hosted on smoe, as soon as i had some free time and the will to work on it. well, for the first time in half a year i've suddenly found myself with a reasonable amount of free time and nothing else to do, so last weekend i spent finally starting this project. thus the birth of ListWeb (perhaps i can come up with a more snappy name later :), which i'm very seriously considering releasing under the GPL or something like that, as i think it will probably be useful for many people who are running a mailing list or hosting scads of lists like smoe does. the only problem is, i'd need to do *some* sort of documentation first :) so, this is a call for beta-testers. if you want to try it out, point your browsers at http://www.jumeaux.bc.ca/smoe/lists.cgi ...note that the only list for which i actually have any archives on the system is ecto, and even they only go up to early this year, as a test case. if you try to access any of the other lists, you'll see the .info file but nothing else. ecto also demonstrates how each list can have its own colour/font/graphic scheme if desired. not that i'm saying it's a particularly *good* colour scheme, but it's a demonstration anyway. :) the search feature is unfortunately a little lame, due to various limitations, but it should help, anyway. note that for some reason my glimpse is broken, and if you try to allow for errors in the advanced search it will probably only return a very few results. i'm aware of the problem but haven't had the time to try and deal with it... anyway, give it a try, and i'd be happy to hear any comments / suggestions / whatever. eventually this will move over to smoe and provide an interface to all the lists hosted there. for the curious, it's implemented in perl with mysql as a backend database server and glimpse for search functionality. i was going to do it in php, but i've written enough php code lately and wanted a change... - -damon - -- np - the btc version of collective heart on the poor little portable cd player that almost could... nr - about to start sheri s tepper's latest, which i happened upon by chance in the library today, _six moon dance_. i know i haven't been doing enough reading lately when i fail to notice a new book by her! I saw a copy of Lori Carson's Everything I Touch Runs Wild with the bonus (mostly remix) disc at a local store the other day. I hope to get back before I leave, so if anyone has been dying to get their hands on it, let me know. I think it was 8 dollars, plus a couple of bucks for postage/packing. It was my first visit to this store, and I was quite happy to go home with Tribe's Abort (which I've somehow never seen), and my first Rose Chronicles disc. And another 8 or so discs as well. Seems like I hadn't been out shopping recently, and was getting the itch. I'm heading into my last week here in Albuquerque. Somewhere in the vicinity of the 14th or 15th I'll be heading out for my typical cross-country meander to get home (Baltimore). This time, I'm going to drive north until I feel I've gone far enough, and then turn east. Far enough is, by definition, at least North Dakota, since it's one of the few states I haven't been too yet. I'm still torn between driving across the top of the US to Minneapolis and maybe heading down to Chicago, and going up to Canada and driving across the trans-Canada highway. I know there are a ton of ecto folk in Chicago, a place I haven't visited much in the past, so it might be fun to go there. Anybody on one of my potential paths who'd like to start talking about getting together for a visit? (And, as always, I won't be turning my back on offers of lodging, though don't feel like I won't meet you for dinner if you won't put me up!) neal now shuffling over: Abort - Tribe The Legend - Tito Puente Ambient 3 - Music of Changes ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 20:52:20 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: travel and lori carson On Fri, 4 Jun 1999 21:16:35 -0600, neal copperman wrote: >I saw a copy of Lori Carson's Everything I Touch Runs Wild with the bonus >(mostly remix) disc at a local store the other day. I bought this album on impulse at a local Starbucks, and have liked it. No, it hasn't made me run wild, or even touched me, but it has a certain seductive quality that makes me want to come back every once in a while. I even included _Snow Come Down_ in a mix tape I did for ecto Jill a while back. I think I paid "espresso price" for it, meaning around $16, so $8 would be a good bargain even of it doesn't touch you or make you run wild. >I'm still torn between driving across the >top of the US to Minneapolis and maybe heading down to Chicago, and going >up to Canada and driving across the trans-Canada highway. Go Trans-Canada. Not that I can say that I have done it, but it would be something different. It's quite ambient, 50 minutes of a four-track vocal drone that I recorded in 1990. Fans of the Harmonic Choir or Sheila Chandra (or, of course, Comma :-]) might enjoy this. The full liner notes (suitable for printing and folding into the booklet, since what the DAM label does in packaging is kinda slim) are at http://silence.metatronpress.com/artists/zitt/ge.html , as well as a sample that you can listen to and, of course, a link to buy it. It's only $5.99 (the virtues of low-overhead production), so go ahead, splurge :-]. (I'm listening to the actual CD for the first time now, and I'm quite pleased, if I say so myself. And everything that I, in hypercritical panic mode, though were weird audio glitches were actually traffic or my neighbors' plumbing playing at the same time. Whew.) n.p. See above :-) n.r.
